I would argue that Rinne, for its direction and visual design, and Daily Lives, for the writing and delivery of its humor, are above-average.You're watching Chihayafuru, so you're already up to date on the best show. Natsume is good as well, but everything else is average to bad.

I disagree completely. I loved the design of their house, the non-euclidean spaces, the stained glass windows, everything. Rarely do I encounter architecture in anime that I actually want to experience in person. It is truly testament to Shinbo's design prowess that, while his environmental design lacks technical finesse, his creations engender such desires within me. The reverberations on the water as the characters moved around were also a nice touch. This reminds me of what bothers me most about that most recent episode of Nisemonogatari - all the character interactions, and especially those ones, were actually very interesting. I liked it, as words, as audio, as character-banter and sparring - just not as a piece of visual storytelling. That's where it completely failed.
Yes, Rinne looks good and isn't directed incompetently but frankly that should be the baseline which all shows achieve. Just because many titles fall far below that doesn't suddenly make it better than it is!
I just can't accept the same low standards which the industry seems to work from.
Prince of Tennis. Now what?I want to know what is for you an average anime
I like you Haly, but this post made my brain hurt. Very little of what you said addresses Jex's complaint against the visual storytelling.I disagree completely. I also immensely enjoyed the emphasis on what I call passive movement. I'm sure there is a more accurate term for this but what I mean is the way people move when they're "still", such as when standing or sitting. You'll notice in a lot of anime that people just don't fidget at all, but that's not how people work. Even when reading a book, people are constantly moving. Tapping their feet to an unheard rhythm, brushing hair out of their eyes, flicking a page, glancing at their surroundings from time to time, even breathing involves an extremely complicated motion that never seems to translate to animated scenes(and sometimes not even live action ones). This is something that Bake and Nise excel at, a kind of attention to trivial detail made possible only by their focus on the minimum amount of characters necessary for advancing the story. This was extremely noticeable in the bathroom scene, although I'm sure most of you missed it because you were too busy scrubbing your eyes out.
I don't have the specific time stamps but there was a few seconds where both Shinobu and Araragi were both in full motion in the bathtub, which was particularly impressive. It did a very good job of conveying Shinobu's playfulness and carefree attitude, as well the anxiety Araragi feels around her, something he tries to cover up with a seemingly casual demeanor.
(As one of AnimeGAF's resident yaoi fangirls, I also cheered at all the Araragiservice and will be anticipating the modified Blu-rays)

Prince of Tennis. Now what?
wait...WAT?

And as expected, you're deflecting the argument. Prince of Tennis is an average at best show, and they're both vastly different shows, hence, differing standards. Prince of Tennis should have nothing to do with my criticisms against Rinne.I know that's pretty ridiculous to put Lagrange in the same group like Prince of Tennis.

It has MARU and Wan and HNNG. It is way the fuck above average.
Well by my scale it is.
Is K-ON average?!This is why, despite my best efforts at times, I don't like using the word "average"
It doesn't surprise me that we'd use different scales.
I wrote it in a bit of a hurry because class was about to end and I agree with you. I had planned to address jehxius' comments directly but before I even started my post morphed into a generalized defense of the visuals in Nise.I like you Haly, but this post made my brain hurt. Especially the first part -- you like the houses, which is fine, but what story does the house tell you? That's the important part.

Its well animated, makes a fair bit of sense in the world its set, has great music, great production values, just enough fanservice to be fun without being stupid, and it seems to be going in a clear direction. I would say it is above average. Its not Chihayafuru great but its not IS/Horizon average.
As for Space Pirates, its slow, but very detailed, and that doesnt make it average. It is too soon to judge what it really is yet.

Your baseline for average is probably going to damn your argument in the eyes of some, but I have no problem with anyone having their own standards (unless they're unreasonably high.) I personally find Lagrange to be well into above-average territory, but I don't think I'm quite ready to enter my first AnimeGAF war of tastes yet, so I'll keep quiet unless I have some actual point to make.
And you're missing my point entirely. Why is this comparison argument even necessary when I want to talk about the actual quality of the show, which you refuse to do?There is a difference between a opinion and putting a show in a big group of "average" animes without comparability.
Fair enough. Although at the least, the windows and skeleton arch roofs qualify as architecture, even if they are unpercievable from outside their rather plain colonial era house.A square black room isn't arquitecture; you're talking about interior design.
They talked about that scene in the thread, actually. I personally didn't like it, from an animation stand point. I understand what they were going for, but the final result feels more like two robots jerking around spastically than like actual people taking a bath. The timing is totally unnatural and and there is genuine disconnection between the voice acting and the animated acting, with the characters barely looking like they're actually saying what the audio tells us they're saying.

That's an admirable position, and I sympathize, but "average" doesn't refer to what you wish the baseline was but what the baseline actually is. Looking at all the shows out there, I find it difficult to believe that Rinne is at that point where half of them are better than it and half of them are worse.

I'm pretty sure my baseline for "average" is already damned by many here.
That is not something I would have expected you to be interested in, but I assume it has yuri in it.Best Japanese cartoon this season:

Fuck, why am I even arguing about this?

I don't define the average by what other anime titles are out this season - I'm talking in general, about all the anime that I've ever watched. The baseline is not what the majority of them might be because I haven't watched the majority of all the anime that has ever been released. I've focused nearly exclusively on the best of the best - which is why I say Rinne is an average title.
Yes, that's why I made sure to include the "yaoi" qualifier. Not all 'fangirls' are fujoshi.
I wasn't aware comparability is limited to a genre. How is Prince of Tennis not comparable to Rinne then? You say Lagrange is average. Okay, but what is now an average mecha show for you? Just to say something is average is not a big help if we have nothing to compare.
