Loved it. I could nitpick the fuck out of the show, but there wouldn't be much point. The characters, story, visuals, and music were all great.

I thought it was kind of weird that it's a prequel yet they kept having flashbacks to a pre-series event. Are they planning to make a prequel to the prequel, or is it covered in the original Ga-Rei? Speaking of which, I hope they animate that as well, because I'm not too big on manga.

Yeah, I doubt they'll be adapting the manga at this point. That's fine though, because as has been said, it's pretty underwhelming. I'm still glad I read it because its highs are good, but for the most part it's unremarkable.

[Nisemonogatari 5]

This is the week where, you know, what's going on in the so called 'arc' actually gets explained. You may remember that in Bakemonogatari that usually happened in one or two episodes, not five. Ah well.

Serious pacing issues aside, this was one the episodes that actually poured some attention into, so it still looks like a SHAFT production, but as terrible as last weeks outing. In other words, the fanservice is somewhat restrained, although that doesn't make it any less creepy. Watch at your peril.

Also, I really want to shoot whoever was put in charge of music for this series, they keep messing it up in really noticeable ways.
How many?

If I remember correctly, something like 8.

I haven't seen LoGH but I'm pretty sure it's a retelling of the first two (maybe three?) episodes with a bunch of extra stuff added.

It's an expanded and much better telling of the events of the first two episodes. I'd start the series with My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars, then Overture of a New War, then episode 3 of the OVA.

The first and second episode, but in much greater detail. I don't really recommend watching My Conquest is a Sea of Stars yet, you might as well save it for later.

Thx for the info, guys. I'll get to watching Overture then. After that, and in seeing that Basileus mentioned the OVA, what would be the best way to proceed from then on?

Then just into episode three of the OVA (which is we often refer to as a series, but of course it's just a really, really long OVA).

Do I look like a miserable pile of self-loathing to you?

My first and only image render.

So proud!

High School DxD 5

This show takes talking as a free action to a WHOLE new level. So bad, sooooooooo bad... The action scene when
his gear transformed
almost made it worth it, but in the end, they didn't even have that sexy ending!

I honestly thing at this point, I keep watching because Asia is so HNNNNNNNNNNG, despite everything else being so BAD.

Amagami SS+ plus 5

This episode just got worse the longer I watched it.
A cram school stealing him away in the night, really??
. It was tough, because I needed more Nanasaki, but this was not what I was expecting. I hope the writers redeem themselves in the last episode. Sad Nanasaki is pretty moe, though.

Whoever Issei's VA is, he was doing a great job that episode.

Cram schools are serious business.

Cardcaptor 43 - 44

Getting closer and closer to a climax with Sakura's dream feeling iminent.

Recorder to Rondeseru - 05

I don't normally comment on 5 minute shorts, because the time spent on them is disposable unless it's a marathon but WOW, they used the exact same joke 3 times, and I bet they're going to recycle the typical kugiloli joke ad infintum, let me reiterate that this is a 5 minute... no sorry a 3 minute short.

Highschool DxD - 05

I didn't even get rewarded with an ED for watching this episode. :< I was almost pining for harem hijinks this episode lotsa talking and crying and basically typical shounenness.

Nisemonogatari 5

Well, that's certainly an awkward line to end the episode.

For some reason the way Shinobu talked during that brief conversation reminded me ever so slightly of Midna.

Blood-C 5

This is the show that I thought Madoka would be. The violence is a bit gratuitous at times(there's been a few censored parts that didn't even need to be there in the first place), and it's kind of silly that almost every fight ends with "you thought you had me but I in fact have you!" but I suppose those both come with the territory. On the other hand, I don't think my heart will ever be able to handle Saya's singing.

Also, I thought the answer to the guimauve question was going to be vagina. In hindsight, that would have been kind of creepy.

Nise 05

Kaiki seems really interesting.

Tsukihi is funny

Hanekawa actually is pretty hnnngh now that I've gotten used to her new design.

Arararagi is still creepy but that's not shocking at all.

For some reason the way Shinobu talked during that brief conversation remined me ever so slightly of Midna.

Y'know I was thinking that from last weeks episode too. I knew there was a reason I liked her so much in this season.

Knight of the Area - 05

So basically the team has a solid defence and just lumps the ball up to a 190cm striker.

Sounds like England with Peter Crouch on the pitch. :lol

Horrible example. Crouch doesn't even play and he's not going to be on the Euro 2012 squad :P.

Asia is cute, but I really like Issei and especially Risa in this show. Neither character is as much of a walking trope as usual. Issei is a nice guy, but he actually has balls, and Risa is nothing like the typical female harem protagonist.

Nisemonogatari - 05

Well that's all bases now officially covered.

Nah, I think you'll find there's probably more bases out there left to cover, I'm afraid.
Not sure I'm seeing it...
There would be Wyald. Probably as gratuitous as it gets, from what I remember...
What else?

I must admit, I've totally forgotten how I came to that number. I did go have a count up awhile back, but now I can't remember.

Highschool DxD 5

This is one of the times when the harem genre can get problematic. In anything else, this episode would have cemented Asia as the official love interest, but here she might not even be the front-runner. She still seems like a perfect fit for Issei considering how he's been acting these past few episodes.

Anyway, some nice action. A certain scene reminded me of a boss in Madworld (you know the one).

Also, why does a priest get his own harem? What sect of Christianity is this supposed to be?

I don't have time to lengthily respond to this, but age != maturity. Salarymen reading about gratuitous rape and dismemberment doesn't make it somehow automatically less juvenile.

Keep telling yourself that you're not a fan of "torture porn" if it helps you sleep better at night while you derive pleasure from entertainment which depicts graphic forms of murder just because it is attached to some ancient cultural perception of masculinity, tho.

There's a place for dollar hamburger and a place for Kobe beef, but one is indeed superior to the other. :>

this is very true. Nothing beats a dollar hamburger. Its unfair to compare anything to it.

SOLD

Nice, Kalafina will sing the Fate/Zero S2 OP.

Kalafina makes everything better.

Getting closer and closer to a climax with Sakura's dream feeling iminent.

You are about to get to the really good stuff. I'm about to finish up my week of work so Monday morning I will resume the series from Ep 48. Hopefully I can get to 60 or even finish it up.

Talking of which, I don't think anyone has noticed how vandalized the Wikipedia page for Garzey's Wing is. This is all from here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garzey%27s_Wing
I dunno, that sounds like a perfectly accurate Wikipedia article to me!

holy shit. bought

[nsfw]

So I guess this . . . thing . . . is getting an OVA.

Hideous.

I don't understand the significance of this.
supposedly it's something really perverted

[Nisemonogatari 5]

I really think I need to clarify what I meant about the art in this episode. It's still, umm, like this -

Now, while it's pretty clear that these birds-eye view shots and extreme long-shots are being used to avoid having to do lots of complicated animation work, I feel that they're having an unintended consequence on the show.

Most shows that use cost-cutting measures, Bakemonogatari included, tend to get around all the tricky business of facial animation by shooting from behind a characters head, or blocking a characters mouth with some object so they don't have to draw in (or repeat) the movement. However, Nisemonogatari favours extreme-long shots, and birds-eye perspective shots, for whatever reason. I can only theorize that they want to save money, but they don't want to be 'seen' saving money using the traditional shot types, so instead they're opting to use these more 'interesting' shots.

However, the problem with using, say, a long-shot is that in the visual language of film when we (as in the audience) are distanced from a character like this we don't feel engaged with their story, their character, who they're talking to etc. You use long-shots to literally distance the audience from the target, it's a piece of cinematography that's meant to make you feel distant from what's been portrayed on screen, where as a close-up or POV shot is used to make you feel closer to something that's happening on screen. The upshot of all this is - the repeated use of the long-shot in Nisemonogatari is repeatedly distancing the viewers from the characters, when actually the director should be trying to bring us closer to them. Whoops.

This is probably my only real complaint about the series so far. Well, besides some obvious... things... but yeah the abuse of wide-angle shots is not very good.

Not that they're all bad. Like, the wide-angle framing for the entire Kaiki scene was in fact a really good idea.
