Winter 2012 Anime Thread of Roundcats Up in This

Can't be bothered with too much positivity?

Nah, like I said, I wouldn't want people to not like something, it's just peculiar how lots of people in this tread enjoy a film that, frankly, isn't really that well liked in "mainstream" anime circles. I guess that's just the kind of folk we are.

I'm almost (almost) tired of people responding positively to Angels Egg - I kind of want someone to post that it bored them to tears. I don't know why I'd want someone to post that, or have a negative experience with a movie that I found to be excellent, but perhaps it would restore some balance.

Obvious call out, but sorry to disappoint you I can’t be bothered to take the bait, I still have a huge pile of movies in my backlog.

edit:

*sees trailer*

o_O art looks fab, I think i need to check this out sometime.

You already answered why nobody here would dare post anything negative about it.

My favorite characters in anime are Yui from K-On!!!!!!!! and Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion~

Wow cool i like Setsuna F. Seiei from Gundam 000 and Sasuke from Naruto ^.^

Seriously, though, I wouldn't mind a list of discouraged topics unless meta-discussion on the thread itself is discouraged.

Destiny Transformation Phenomenon - the world revolves around you bullshit.

I think this may have been the best episode of the series in regards to how they originally intended the series to be. A gradual shift in mood does wonders. It's just too bad
Kouyou's "sacrifice" like Mizuki's confession was so arbitrary given the lack of character development in general for everyone in the series.

The music is also amazing, though it was made before Oshii starrted collaborating with Kenji Kawaii and I don't think the composer has done any other animu work.
I am totes getting dat soundtrack.
Yoshihiro Kanno is a trained contemporary classical composer, which is why the Angel's Egg soundtrack is different (and much more interesting) than pretty much any other anime soundtrack.

I pity you! A life without Madoka, Denpa, Soredemo, Zetsubo or Arakawa is just sad.
Well it's not like I avoid watching SHAFT shows (since I did watch madoka arakawa and soredemo) but it's mainly to see if their shows will get any better than they are, and they usually don't.

That said most people here who claimed to enjoy "angel's egg" are probably pretending just to seem like classy folk, when in truth they were bored to tears by it.
except for me, since I'm one of those weird people that finds slow deliberately paced films more engaging than the average non-art film.>:

But I don't think it's disliked, it's just not popular. But they do say that apathy, not hatred, is the opposite of love.

Oh my god that was horrible, me and my friend just sat down and watched this with the idea to make a podcast review of this. To be honest we don't have the time of day for this anymore.
I turned at one point and said to my friend and said "Thats the sound of zombie tanks" and then guess what, zombie tanks( ish?). Which were the only intresting thing that happened due to ME in the whole movie aside from one scene with weird fishermen who are blue and chase fish shadows.
If your looking for something that can be artsy, calm and make a statement then watch Kigeki(Comedy), Mushishi or Mononoke.
For most watchers i'm telling to you;
AVOID THIS SHOW.

Why haven't you watched Night on the Galactic Railroad and Landscape in the Mist yet then, jerk?!
Unless you have, in which case nevermind.
Not yet, but I assure you Night on the Galactic Railroad will be the next animu film I watch!
MAL to the rescue!
It's not even a show, it's a film.

Bra explosion.
Besides that and all the ariari, ari ja ne? and all the ariariariariari, that episode just pretty much blew past me.

I'm pretty glad it has gone over so well. Now you guys know I'm not completely insane.

Well yeah! Oddly enough Angels Egg is one of the first anime titles that I ever consumed, way back before I got "into" anime - I can't remember how I even came across it, but I certainly found the imagery and tone extremely memorable when I first sat down with it.

It's the head tilt of AnimeGAF convos.

Another convert. Good, good.
*rubs hands together*

If you rewatch it, pay special attention to
the story of Noah's ark, and the ending zoom-out, which is a shot of....an ark!
I think that helps to contextualize the plot of the movie (there is one!).[/spoiler]

I thought there was also a shot of the ark earlier?

Well, add me to the list of people who were mesmerized by Angel's Egg. The ending sent shivers down my spine.

Mizuki, there is no reason why you should be envious of
Mone.
With that said, I don't even find her character quirk annoying or her character for that matter. Then again, her purpose within this series is one that could easily be replaced by Neneko if she wasn't, as I'll say lightly, "integral" to the story somehow. What annoys me most about her character, however, is there's no sense of subtlety to allow her character to work. Although, first and foremost, character development has been genuinely terrible throughout the series, she's been the worst example of this. But to give credit, her best character moment was in Episode 2, even if I hated how they've resolved that conflict because I have qualms with how Moera is used in general, but that's also because of the poor direction when we transition from the real world to Moera.

Anyway,
Angel's Egg > Aronofsky's upcoming Noah's ark movie
Tbh, I'm kind of excited for Aronofsky's Noah's ark movie since it's bound to tap into all his worst traits as a director, I'm especially excited to see how UN-SUBTLE he plays out the "evils of human nature" motif of the original story.

Yeah, but well before the story is relayed, and possibly before the characters are introduced I think? I'm not sure. There are fishing spears shown before the fishermen show up, too, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case; the film is internally consistent with its world. This will make for a good excuse to watch it again.

I will have to check once I get home, but I think you are right in that it happens before the characters are introduced.
Anyway,
Angel's Egg > Aronofsky's upcoming Noah's ark movie

But...but...
You are probably right.

I think this thread is telling me to watch Angel's Egg.

Think of it as a threat.

That's because it's a beautiful and unique snowflake, there's nothing else like it and there never will be. thank god for the anime boom of the 80s or it probably wouldn't exist.

I think we can pretty safely say that it 'definitely' wouldn't exist - I mean, who in their right mind would have funded such a thing?

Kurogane no Linebarrels end

Very strong ending. Not gonna lie, I teared up a bit when
Kizaki and Koichi were in the space tunnel thing.
I have no doubt that this took at least some inspiration from Gurren Lagann even if it wasn't anywhere near as epic.

Overall, this series had some very high highs with some notable lows that make it average out to somewhere between good and great. Had I watched this before TTGL, I probably would have loved it and thought it was the best thing ever.

Pretty much every aspect of the show I can give praise to, I can also give criticism to. First of all, the characters. When development is done right, it's really good, but there are a lot of inconsistencies. Koichi for example seems like a mishmash of conflicting tropes and ultimately probably did not end up what the writers wanted him to be. At first, he seemed like a refreshing take on the self-righteous teenager aspiring to be a hero by making him delusional, selfish and having a sense of justice that relies on whatever is convenient for him. But as the series goes on, he ends up being treated like a legit hero, and while I would say he does grow into one, it isn't readily apparent and shouldn't warrant the other characters treating him differently since the growth is so slow and often shows some regression. Yajima on the other hand is treated like crap for a lot of the series when he's probably the most sympathetic character and would have the best development had he not been at the mercy of Koichi's development like everyone else.

The president of Juda, however is amazing and a huge reason to watch this. His personality, actions and other stuff are both hilarious and badass. He is probably one of the most consistent characters and that twist a little over halfway through the series and its follow up lead to one of the more interesting developments.

As for the mech battles, they are also inconsistent. Some are absolutely amazing like
Koichi vs Yajima
but certain others are completely incoherent half the time. Like looking into a kaleidoscope or something. Though I do think the good ones greatly make up for the bad ones. The finale alone lets me forgive.

The only thing I don't really have anything positive to say about are the character designs. I don't have enough negative to say about them to make a big deal out of it either, but it's definitely not the kind of art style I actively go out seeking. Even the manliest of characters look feminine because of the eyeliner, facial structure and proportions. Again, it's not a big deal but I could see it being a turn off for a lot of people.

So yeah, I liked this a lot. Enough to check out the manga. This show needs more love.

That is a good way to start a conversation or an anime.

I don't know what I will get but I'm already in love with the fluid animations, the simple characterdesign, the detailed backgrounds and story with the romance plot looks pretty interesting.

Someone could've easily added some Maria Holic in there. Nobody likes ghost lolis.

There's a shot of Matsurika in there, but it should be stripped from the Wall of Head Tilts along with Menma because Maria+Holic Alive was so terrible.

Just replace everything with those two shots of Senjougahara, she's the best head-tilter of them all anyway.

Speaking of things no one in their right mind would fund - there exists concept art of an Oshii/Amano Lupin III movie. It pretty much looks like something out of Angel's Egg with a Patlabor 1-ish plot.

I'm pretty sure I brought this up for discussion on this very forum quite recently. Hmm.

Oh yeah, here it is. God bless search -

You're right! I think I accidentally ignored it because I was mad Menma was in there.

Darn it.

It's interesting to note that instead of getting the Oshii Lupin, Legend of the Gold of Babylon was released in 1985 instead.

You know, that movie directed by Seijun Suzuki. This guy right here.

Surely the execs purposely wanted a bizarre Lupin movie given their choices for directors...

And, suddenly everyone wants to kill you.
A decent detective bit with some jokes flying around. The second part was about Tanabata which I vaguely remember from the manga.

Soredemo 3

The SHAFT head tilt taken to new levels.

i'm glad i'm not alone on this

I'm hoping for imaginary lesbians, overdone camerawork, and general hysteria.

Oh and DRUGS ARE BAD MMMMKAY
have you been skipping all of my posts for the last year and a half ;-;
Unfortunately, most forms of storytelling will never live up to the high calibur social commentary on drugs found in Garzey's Wing.

The chart of filthy lies which claims that Angel's Egg has a basset hound in it!
Unforgivable!

Hey anime-gaf I have been lurking for quite some time. Unfortunately, I have not been watching anime recently, can you guys recommend any new shows that have come out this season.

For reference a few shows I really like (current and older)
In no particular order: Gintama (one of the funniest shows I've seen), Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, Samurai Champloo, Beck and GTO.

Check out Daily Lives of Highschool Boys if you like Gintama. Has much of the same cast and staff as Gintama.

You have impeccable taste there new junior.

Unfortunately this season doesn't really anything along those lines.

I do recommend Natsume's Book of Friends, this season has been especially fantastic and the franchise overall is top notch. It's easily the best show of this season.

Not a huge fan of Daily Lives of Highschool Boys myself but a lot of Gintama fans have thoroughly been enjoying it, it's also worth checking out.

Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 1

A.K.A the T files feature length version

ccslI.jpg

Don't worry Tomoyo, you'll have plenty of time to film Sakura.

The basic summary is that during winter holiday Sakura wins a trip to Hong Kong via a lottery, where all the "coincidence" is not what it seems, judging by the cards used in the movie it seems to take place between the first and second OP changes (i.e eps 35 - 46). So Cajun if you're lurking WATCH IT NOOOW!!

Q0fww.jpg
9RMJy.jpg

I said you have enough time to film her, calm down.

The first half of the movie, is basically all build up, Sakura travels to Hong Kong finds something strange about it, meets up with Li at some point (because he's from Hong Kong you know another "coincidence" perhaps?) and at one point go to his home, where we learn a few things about Li moreso than what's been shown in the series so far.

Hmm... I seem to have accidentally posted some :cajun pics of China dresses, well this is China afterall.

qpA8f.jpg
ghZF9.jpg

Enter Li's sisters... and all of a sudden Li's personality makes sense the poor guy, he stood no chance with 4 older sisters. :(

e0GqU.jpg

After they fawn over Sakura and Tomoyo in their dresses then their attention turns to Toya and Yukito... who only have eyes for each other.

YctfQ.jpg

They're clingy even when they're about to leave.

IcgWS.jpg

Wouldn't be Cardcaptor without a Tomoyo custom made cardcaptor costume.

Overall a very servicable movie, although it's a bit cliche'd on how the enemy is defeated at the end, but then again what else would I expect from a Mahou Shoujo?

You may be a lurking newbie, but with a like-list like that and love for Gintama, you have a bro in me. You'd probably dig Steins: Gate, a lot. Like just about all of those you listed, it's heavily character-driven, and well/entertainingly written.
