Witcher 3: Official Gameplay Trailer

Maybe the wrong place to ask so apologies if so:

i don't have a whole heap of time to play games, so I'm thinking of choosing either The Witcher 3 or Elder Scrolls Online when they are released (ps4).

Struggling to decide which one :(.

The only thing that is putting me off the witcher is that i haven't played either of the other two, which I'm not sure if it will hamper my overall experience.

tough choice :(

How? The praise for Elder Scrolls Online right now is basically "Not as awful as you heard it was."

Being a person who has not played the first two (And doesnt intend to), CDPR has stated that it is not required to play the previous games to enjoy this one. There will no doubt be references and such that we won't pick up on, but I don't think it will hinder the game if you haven't played the first two.

Plus ESO is terrible.

Hard to argue against:
triss4buco.jpg

That is fake though. Red heads is just a pretty word for ginger hair, in which case, I can argue against it.

One of the CDPR developers said on Twitter that it will be possible to import my choices from The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360. How will that work?

There is a barber you visit during prologue, and during dialogue with him, depending on what you say your choices will be "imported"
This feature is available on all three versions. PC also have standard save import, which will be more detailed (for example it is possible to get a tattoo in TW2 and it will be in TW3 if saves are imported with it).

I've only played a few hours of TW2, gotta buckle down and play through TW1 and 2 before 3 comes out, but I did encounter a tattoo of
a naked lady holding a sword that Geralt gets while drunk.
Is this the one you mean? If so... I may just have to do that. XD

I'm more interested in why you would want to play Elder Scrolls Online. Everything I've seen of that game looks like the dullest thing.

yeah that is the one. You can remove it with help of Triss or leave it. I removed it personally, though I am curious if Yennefer is going to comment on it if left.

Honestly, you won't miss much by skipping the first Witcher game. The Witcher 2 will take some time to beat, especially if you want to clear most of the questlines that open up to you, and really seems like the best 'starting point' for the third game if you are so inclined to play some Witcher before May.

Does Geralt have a home base or a customizable player home or anything? I love shit like that, and on going romance options.

As far we know there won't be any "homebase" type mechanic. All your gear that you want have with you need be on your person and in saddlebags that your horse will carry.

When it comes to romance options expect there to be quite a few minor romances that you can pursue and then more serious ones with Triss and Yennefer.

That's his home base in the distance, home of all the Witchers - Kaer Morhen. I doubt it will be customisable though. There weren't any homes to buy and equip as you see fit in the previous games and I don't think they mentioned such a feature appearing in Wild Hunt.

Can I customize my horse at least? I mean that would be even better, a mobile "homebase." Also these more serious relationship, will they be able to continue past the main storyline? I haven't played Witcher 2, but can you like request for Triss assistance while you just scavenge the land?

Well at least he has a place to rest his head safely at night, thanks for providing that gif!

I think people might be giving you the wrong impression. We don't even know if Kaer Morhen can be returned to at any point during the game, it might be locked into specific story moments.
Even then, Kaer Morhen might be The Witcher's "base", but they actually don't spend that much time there. Witcher's by nature are travelling monster slayer's, and Kaer Morhen is very far away from the areas that Geralt tends to stick to (Temeria, Redania, Aedirn etc). If they hung around Kaer Morhen all the time they wouldn't actually make any money or do what they are trained to do.
Definitely do not expect something like homes in Skyrim, or even Skyhold from DA:I.

Romance most likely won't continue past the main storyline. No you won't be able to request assistance of your friends whenever you want. They will only be with you at very specific story moments.

You can customize your horse with Saddlebags, Binders etc, but that's about it.

I don't know if you can customize the horse but it does have its own equipment slots for things like blinders, saddle, and saddle bags... but those are mainly for making him less fearful and increasing his stamina

What I have read/heard about mechanics around horse you can upgrade [read: train] it to have more stamina, speed, be more brave so it doesn't get so scared when monsters around etc. Then there supposedly is better saddles with differences like some saddle is better for racing than other and different sized saddlebags.

When it comes to relationships in Witcher I highly doubt they will lead into any kind "party forming". E.g. in Witcher 2 Triss would accompany you into the wild if it was required for task at hand or just to spent time with Geralt, but you couldn't go and sign her up for some scavenging at any time.

Besides Geralt likes to work alone, at least that is my understanding of him.

Relationships in Witcher games have been about learning about people you are involved with and growing that relationship with said people. Some of them leading into more romantic direction while others stay as platonic or just friendship.

TL:DR; If e.g. Triss helps you out in task at hand it's because she has good reason to help you, not because you grinded X rep with her and recruited her into your party.

Hopefully the zero weight mod comes out soon after the game release.

Why? Inventory and gear management is often one of the fun part of RPG's because you just can't haul every cup and fork with you so you can sell them for some coin. Maybe I'm weird for liking that I have to pick and choose what I pick up and take with me :b

Anyone know if choices from the Witcher 2 follow through to 3?

PC version will have save importing from Witcher 2 to 3.

On consoles there will be "Prologue" kinda thing that you will go through and make choices at key points of event of W1 and W2 in order to shape world of Witcher 3 into your liking. This should be also available on PC on top of save importing.

Is it possible to import W1 saves to W2 on PC?

If I had to choose between playing The Elder Scrolls Online NOW, or waiting a year to play The Witcher 3.... I'd wait a year to play The Witcher 3. ESO is generally considered to be pretty terrible.

What is combat like in the Witcher 3?

Just like you, we can only speculate based on the footage that's been released so far...

What's that?

It's a debugger that allows you to modify any running program in memory. It's mostly used for creating cheats (hence the name, Cheat Engine).

I'll be using it to create a free camera for the game, but you can use it for a myriad of other things as well. Like... giving yourself infinite carry capacity.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect a little more, though. This game is WAY bigger than TW2. More room for everything.

That's my view.

I'm still not expecting TONS of stuff to come over, simply because I'm not setting myself up for that disappointment (Mass Effect taught me well, not to mention The Witcher was never touted or marketed as a series where bringing across previous game saves is a "big deal").
However considering the size of The Witcher 3, the fact that it's the final entry and their last chance to close off certain characters, I think there's definitely a chance of seeing more stuff transfer than what we saw from 1 > 2. Nothing major or massive, but certainly lots of little things, and more than previously.

Is the Witcher franchise choice - consequence heavy? With my little time with Witcher 2, I noticed I was making some decisions. But I never played it far enough to see how much of a consequence they had.

And if it does, how are they going to handle the story in Witcher 3 for those without a save file to carry over from?

Is there a universally accepted 'canon story' that mirrors the book that is defaulted to?

I don't think it was like Arkham at all. In the earlier parts of the game, you really had to think about what you were doing and be careful. You had to kite enemies around so you could separate them from the pack, otherwise you would quickly find yourself getting chopped down. It made you think about using magic or traps in order to slow specific foes down. But inevitably, one on one, it's almost like Dark Souls in the sense that rolling is your savior. And, in later parts of the game, once you've done enough sidequests and leveled up enough, your character becomes a bit overpowered. But not everyone opts to do so many sidequests so maybe that's not a problem for the people who just want to main quest the thing before Witcher 3 comes out.

I'm not sure. The size might be an impediment to extensive save importing. Like, they've already made a huge chunk of content that supposedly is fairly dynamic, and now they're going to go and close/open major branches based on prior game decisions that most people playing probably won't have explored? I wouldn't expect too much on this front. As others have said, probably a handful of fairly minor things.

Slightly OT, but is the free Witcher 3 game still offered with all boxed versions of the GTX 970? I'm picking one up in a few days but the website I'm buying from doesn't mention it.

There are a lot of choices and consequences in the games, in Witcher 2 especially but they are mostly contained within the singular title. There was very, very little of those consequences carrying over from W1 to W2 (one of the two love interests got wiped out of the face of earth in the process too.) and I expect the same to be the case with going from the second game to the third.

Story takes place after the books ended so they're free to continue the story however they wish.

I'll be using it to create a free camera for the game...

I wouldn't be surprised if game had one build into it and that you could access it via some console command. After all there has been mentions that CDPR gave press access to free camera mode that they then used to fly freely all over the world.

Decisions in Witcher games are rarely binary "Good - Bad" and seeing consequences of your decisions can take quite bit of time and even then they may be small that you can miss them if you don't pay attention.

Witcher 3 features "Prologue" system that at beginning of the game recaps you with events of previous games and lets you do decisions at key moments of those games in order to shape world into your liking.

You need to find store that is participating in that Nvidia campaign of "Free game X with your GPU purchase!" or you will miss out.

Should be, the promotion is definitely still happening.

Email the place you're buying from and check though. If you've got a few days still before you buy then they should be able to get back to you in time and confirm it.

What was combat like in W2? I know nothing. Is it like BB? Or like Tales of X? Or what?

It's not really like anything I can think of. Completely different then a Souls title and doesn't really remind me of the Batman games aside from having Geralt move from enemy to enemy with certain attacks.

It wasn't anything special though and W3 looks much improved over it. It was pretty unresponsive and felt pretty poor to play. There was an interesting meditation mechanic that allowed you to prepare for upcoming fights via potions but for me, that mechanic fell by the wayside by chapter 2 because of how overpowered you get.

Sure, I'm expecting a little bit more than what we got from TW1>TW2. I'm not expecting anything too big though just little nods, cameos, and some altered text.
