Is anyone seriously trying to claim that is a factor? The amount of people who care about staying true to a manga/anime couldn't fill up a single theater.

They are just enough to fill a topic on neogaf (this is not a judgment on their claims).

Seriously, the fact is a bomba is not related to its quality (or lack of), just a question of marketing.

In fact, shitty movies have often large success on the box office.

Honestly I never really felt most of the people in the GitS threads cared about the source material all that much either. There is rarely any discussion of tge central philosophy of the series snd how the movie strays from that, I'd say 90 percent plus discussion has focused on casting politics.

GitS had one of the key problems with adaptions like this to me.

It seemed to try to pander to fans of the property and leave those uninitiated wondering what the fuss is about while also changing too much to actually please the fans it's pandering toward.

So you leave the general audience wondering why they should pay money and piss off the hardcore base and end up with no one.

No really solid hook. The imagery - as great as it looked - is also not particularly new. The whitewashing controversy. The fact it's a movie banking on star power when STAR POWER as a fuel is highly diluted and has been for like 20 years.

That it's an anime adaptation isn't really that big a deal, I don't think. I keep seeing people bring it up, and I don't know why. Audiences don't really give a shit what the movie they're going to watch is adapted from. Laaaaaarge percentages of them will never look at that source material no matter what it is. Book. Cartoon. TV commercial. Board game, whatever.

Is the premise interesting, can you sell that premise intriguingly. That's really all that matters at this point. You can adapt a fucking coffee cup if you can knock out a commercial that makes people feel like it'll be a good 90 minutes at the theater.
I feel most audiences are like myself in that they either know nothing of the anime or know very little about it. The commercials for GitS didn't hook me into going to see it. Looked very generic and not even sure who it's supposed to appeal to. Other people mentioned Lucy which I saw and liked; but GitS doesn't even remind me of that based off the commercials other than the lead being the same.

I think I've heard more about the whitewashing of the film than I know anything plot wise that happens in it. But that wouldn't have been a factor personally in keeping me away if the commercials had been at all compelling.

My takeaway from everything I know is this is a movie about a futuristic naked white robot lady who shoots people and jumps off buildings. Adding in what I think I know about the anime, something about the military is involved and hacking (maybe?). Maybe the robot lady can hack? Anyway, zero motivation to check this film in theaters and none of my friends are talking about it or have shown any desire to see it either. This would be relegated to a bored afternoon Netflix viewing in the future if that.

Switching to physical costumes (both Rangers and Zords) and dropping Cranston and Banks would do it.

Thats kinda why the thought interests me even if I wouldn't want them to do it.
So many reviews said it felt like a setup for a CW series it made me curious.

Already have physical costumes,
Zordon could have a Legends of Tomorrow Gideon makeover
Zords appearances are limited
Enemies get typical CW costumes
filmed in Vancouver with everything else

I really don't think GitS deserved the reception it's getting - it's not a great GitS film, but it's a good cyberpunk film and you really don't get many of those.

I wouldn't mind if the puddies were just wearing costumes like in MMPR S1. They could get a lot for mileage out of that.

Oh I know that.
Im just curious what the bare minimum budget would need to be to salvage the movie version as a TV series at least on CW's tier.(if a sequel is impossible)

For sure. I would be happy if they moved from Nick to CW. Having an hour long program would make for better storytelling. Plus they can mature up the plot immensely. But CW would never take on the PR franchise.

What is the point of adapting it then

The concept is kind of interesting and something decent could be done with it, it's just that the execution is baaad.

Then again, if we're talking a Hollywood adaptation of an anime, they would manage to make it even worse.

it makes me wonder just why the hell lucy opened with $40 million, thereby convincing people scar jo's a bankable action lead.

The problem I don't think was Scar Jo. People said the script and adaption just wasn't that great.

Banks strikes me as the sort who'd happily do one off TV appearances if she liked the people involved. And Cranston could probably rattle off the voice acting in an afternoon for a seasons worth of 'NO POWER RANGERS, BEWARE' style dialogue.

Why would you hire the director of Snow White and the Huntsman to helm the Ghost in the Shell adaptation?

Why

He's probably cheap as hell after the backlash he got in the wake of his affair with Kristen Stewart on the set of that film.

At the current rate he's going, in a couple of years, he'll be where Renny Harlin was after Cutthroat Island.

But then it'll also have to be good and get good word of mouth.

Why

I'm sure he made a great pitch. It's just too bad Paramount bought it. I will say this though in Sanders' defense, Paramount edited it to shit, fucked with the score and released it in the worst possible window.

The thing with GitS is that people are going to want to pin the failure of the film on whatever their problem with it is so it vindicates them. Whitewashing, poor interpretation of the manga/anime, etc. But a lot of of the public that could make this film sink or swim have no idea of the source material and either don't know about the whitewashing issues or don't care. The biggest reason for GitS failure is that it looks like an uninspired movie we've seen several times before. It looks like a retread of Robocop and Blade Runner, another ScarJo sci-fi vehicle like Lucy. Even if I divorce myself from my knowledge of the source material, nothing about it looks particularly interesting. If the reviews were positive it might overcome these issues but as you know most of them aren't. Most of the people who might have some interest in seeing it are probably taking a "wait til Netflix" approach with this one.

GitS is bomba because people already watched this stupid film when it was called Lucy. Why would they watch it again just because it was branded as some dumb animu adaptation? Stop casting ScarJo as the same fucking character in every film and maybe people won't be bored of it.

Why would you hire the director of Snow White and the Huntsman to helm the Ghost in the Shell adaptation?

Why

Why not? If it's going to bomb anyway why not get the most economical option? As if anime and game adaptations will ever make bank. Lol.

Lucy was sold as Scarlett Johansson has now superpowers and defeats baddies.

Ghost in the Shell... Scarlett Johansson walking emotionless trough cool looking places?

Oh another humorless serious face female lead in an action movie? This/Lucy/all underworlds/ all mila jovovuch movies have this same problem. Why can't we get more female action movies where the lead is a fun person? I need more The Long Kiss Goodnight and less Ultraviolet.

I have the same problem with segal/dolph lundren movies.

Just me but after watching GitS's trailers in front of every movie I saw since Suicide Squad I just wasn't that interested in seeing it. Went from mildly curious to "I'm think I can figure out where this is heading" by the third or so trailer. Didn't help that the marketing strategy seemed to consist of forcing people to get excited through overexposure.

Ghost in the Shell got a bad start. Not surprising, considering all the controversy it has and the average reviews it got.

But CW would never take on the PR franchise.
If they thought it works for their target audience, budget, etc they wouldn't be against it.
CBS would probably be happy to have something well recognized on there not a 100% WB franchise.

WB also doesn't completely treat them as a Marvel like rival

It's sort of odd when you think about the most successful male action stars/roles over the years.

I really wanted to look past the whitewashing controversy and give GitS a chance mostly because I love both the original film and anime so much but the moment that I saw the dude they cast as Batou and how ridiculous he looked I noped out.

The trailers made the film look worse than Charlize's Aeon Flux adaptation which is an accomplishment in itself.

I don't see why CW would be against something like PR. I would wonder how they'd handle the splicing of footage though.

But other than that the CW is pretty much a hero network. PR plays off that well. Get a decent showrunner and a solid cast and I think you have a hit.

People on movie/anime boards are way smarter/thinking than the average joe. But not smart enough to get it.

I wonder how well or poor Blade Runner will do. First one didn't do so hot.

Had no idea Power Rangers was doing so poor. Heardbgood things about it.

The original Blade Runners box office is pretty irrelevant. It was a movie discovered on home video.

Blade Runner is a question mark. The teaser doesn't seem to have garnered much views though. I expect Arrival-like numbers to be considered a success.

Blade Runner's now regarded as a classic, even if it did badly on initial release. My only concern is that it might be a hard sell for the average filmgoer, as the original was, and it's going to need those viewers if the budget is high. Difficult to guess how it's going to turn out until we get the first full trailer.

No numbers yet. We'll probably hear something closer to release.

I bet it's around $65m-$80m (higher than Arrival for sure).

That sounds about right. It's going to be much more CGI intensive than any of his previous films. He's a pretty economical director so I don't expect it to be that expensive though.
