While we're on the topic of "wtf is that synopsis"...this movie is getting a limited opening this weekend, after premiering for a Film Festival last fall.

The synopsis
The film, which stars Michelle Rodriguez as a hitman forced to undergo a sex-reassignment surgery at the hands of a vengeful doctor (Sigourney Weaver), began life as a 1978 story by Denis Hamill.

How “The Assignment” handles trans issues would be laughable if it weren’t actively harmful to LGBT people. The film is a 100-minute-long paean to gender dysphoria — with Kitchen frequently railing against his female form. Multiple scenes show the hitman grabbing his breasts and vagina with disbelief, unable to process life without his member. He repeatedly refers to himself as an “it.”

Rather disappointing the third time isn't the charm for this Smurfs film, as the animation looks great, and the designs are much closer to Peyo's art style compared to the ugly Chipmunk-esque designs from the last two live-action/CG films.

With that said, those live-action Smurfs movies were truly horrendous, I wouldn't be shocked if they were a big reason as to people avoiding this one like the plague if the forecasts are correct about the film bombing domestically on its OW.

And if that happens, SPA (and the rest of Sony Pictures for that matter) will have to rest their hopes on The Emoji Movie saving their summer...lmao.

That'd be a very strong opening and run for Wonder Woman. I'm skeptical about it hitting that high, but it'd be nice.

Ghost in the Shell's first day in China was between $7 and $8M depending on whether you want to throw in the service fees or not. $40-50M total is still looking like the probable outcome.

Fate of the Furious presales are pointing to a huge opening in China. Like possibly >$200M OW huge.

It would be the lowest for the DCEU by a good margin, so perhaps it's not that unrealistic. Wonder Woman is a well known character. We'll see how things progress in the next two months.

Expensive cars and crazy, over the top spectacle?

I mean, they spent over $65M watching Need for Speed, and close to $75M watching the Expendables 3. Given the grosses of XXX and San Andreas, the actors seem to be pretty popular in China as well. Even the Last Witch Hunter managed $27M.

One is/was in the works between EA and China Film. To be shot in China.



If Fate of the Furious actually does break $200M opening weekend in China, and if it hits or exceeds tracking on the domestic side of things, it could challenge that Worldwide Opening record that The Force Awakens set.

Furious 7 made almost $400M in its opening weekend worldwide without China (which opened 9 days after the domestic opening). The record is $529M. Fate of the Furious opens everywhere next week, except for Japan and a few small territories.

That's true but I never expected it to top them. And as far as I know, it's at the lower end of comic movie budgets.

Despite the lower OW by $2M, Ghost in the Shell is having better daily grosses than xXx: The Return of Xander Cage day to date.

So some consolation for Paramount :p

The worldwide record is going down if Fate plays like 7 in most territories overseas.

I'm curious to see how things go in the US. It could go either way on whether this breaks $300M or falls back to the level of 6.

It will almost certainly set the foreign opening record, which is $316M by Jurassic World. The question is whether it can break that by enough to offset the fact that TFA's domestic opening will probably be double F8's.

I don't trust budget estimates when they are made 8-12 months (or longer) before release. We'll see what Variety/Hollywood Reporter are listing in a couple of months. I will be impressed if they actually managed to make the film in that $100-120M target range, but I'm expecting it to creep up.

He actually tried to get this made back in the day. He tried a couple of times, but it fell by the way side. A few years ago he found a copy of the old script in his basement and now we got Michelle Rodriguez with a huge fucking dick.

Had it been mentioned in the thread that Deadline has Pirates 5 tracking for a $115M+ 4-day debut? That would honestly completely shock me.

Related anecdote: Deadline's article about Pirates 3 tracking for $200M over Memorial Day Wkd 2007 was my first exposure to the site.

Also, nothing regarding the Fast series and China will surprise me. Not anymore. Basically, China's box office is like "Well, I guess that's happening." Doesn't matter what it is. I can't even attempt to predict it, or make sense of it. It's like a random number generator.

Pretty much my reaction after seeing the performance of A Dog's Purpose. Nearly 90M in China and I have no clue why.

I'm not shitting on the Furious series in the slightest. They're big dumb fun, the sort of sweaty male soap opera superhero antics that anyone who grew up with Professional Wrestling is predisposed to loving to death upon seeing it writ large with $$$ thrown at it.

But I'm also not all that ready to ascribe, of all the things, a taste for "originality" as to why mass audiences love the fuck out of it.
