Again, Valerian didn't need to beat Dunkirk in the US to make money for Europacorp and warrant a sequel. As I said on the last page, Besson said Lucy numbers would be what it takes to green light a Valerian sequel, and yet Lucy did worse in the US than Dunkirk. There is a big gap between bombing and beating a big Nolan movie in America.
Obviously, Valerian bombed, but that's not the argument I was making. What I'm saying is the film could have been successful even without believing it would make more money than Dunkirk in America.

Well, Dunkirk is written, directed, and acted by British people. So its more accurate to say the British movie destroyed the French one.
LOL at the idea that Dunkirk beat Valerian because its director is more well known. Yeah, the millions of movie goers main deciding factor in choosing a movie is not the director. The world barely even thinks of Valerian as a French movie. Just another shitty Hollywood one. So the idea that Dunkirk did well only because of American loyalties to American movies is just flat out preposterous.

Problem is Luc Besson just doesn't seem to have a great handle on the English language, and this shines through in the atrocious dialogue and even worse line delivery in many of his movies.

What's with people putting words in my mouth in this thread? I didn't say Dunkirk only beat Valerian because of its director. Valerian had fundamental issues and Dunkirk did not.
Also, Dunkirk was funded by Warner Bros. (an American production company) and Nolan is not just British anyway, he's British-American.

You are the one who tied the performance to Valerian being French and Dunkrik being American, and due to how well know the directors are. Not sure how I'm putting any words in your mouth. I just dispute that, regardless of if you think you said that or not.
Dunkrik, directed by a Brit, written by a Brit, acted by Brits. Also literally about British people and the British war effort. A bit odd to insist its not British, imo. No shame in a French movie being annihilated by a British one.
Financed? Valerian was financed by entities from all over the world like many movies, treated as an international investment vehicle, which contradicts you calling it a French movie if financing is what determines a where a movie comes from. Would mean the movie is international, which would contradict your point.
When the BBC finances American things that makes it British? Lol, no. Is Orphan Black British because its British money? No.
