Dunkirk taking first place this weekend is not that surprising. If that $12.2M holds, Dunkirk should make around $29M for the weekend.
Looks like the Emoji Movie will be pretty close behind with around $27M. That exceeds the earlier tracking, so I suppose that is a positive for Sony.
I'm curious to see how Atomic Blonde managed on Saturday. Girls Trip has a pretty good shot at beating it for 3rd place this weekend.

The American movie beat the French movie in America and the French movie beat the American movie in France. Luc Besson is not a well-known name in America so the Christopher Nolan name alone would have put more asses in seats, unless Valerian starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Valerian and ScarJo as Laureline.

I'm assuming you never read the books, cuz they were always fighting an uphill battle there. Hell, it's good they're not even bothering with the end, that last book was horrible. It was an insult to that genre, which is really saying something.
Edit: Actually, you would probably be the best person to ask, since you're the only one here who watched that last one. Did they ever get to the part where they put her in a jet and she looks down at the small buildings and stuff and has a random monologue about how that proves the existence of God?
What? Valerian could've been the only movie released last weekend and it still would've bombed.
And maybe apes wouldn't have :/

It's definitely not bad. I've said it before, but I think there's a bit of a cultural gap here. You say "poor leads," but what leads, in such an oddball film, could have countered Christopher Nolan? Short of getting A-listers, no, there was no beating Dunkirk. Valerian is very European in style and too wacky to resonate with American audiences as much as a WWII film made by one of the most popular directors of his generation.

Looking it up, y'know I think Dunkirk could outright be called a British Film on it's own, as I don't see any other American production companies involved with this film unlike Nolan's other films despite Warner Brothers funding it.
However if all it takes is for a Hollywood studio to fund a film and distribute it for it to be American, then I guess it's an American film.

That first Divergent is like a group of young stars Hollywood has been trying to make happen (Miles Teller, Jai Courtney, etc)...and then Kate Winslet, who hopefully collected a good paycheck.

The first book was good, the other entries got progressively worse with each release, though I still enjoyed the series overall, especially the films.

Atomic Blonde was a top notch spy film. I think folks might be disappointed because it was marketed as a John Wick-like, which it only is in small bits.

I still haven't seen the film, but this is the one consistent thing I've heard from people who have: Those who went in knowing about the Wick stuff came out disappointed it wasn't Wick-esque. Those who went in only knowing it was a spy-movie with asskicking came out more satisfied.
i can't tell if that's faint praise for valerian, divergent, or both

For what it's worth though, those Wick-esque moments are glorious.
I was too young during most of the cold war to really get a sense of the dread and paranoia of the age but it works as a noir film, at least.
Xaos doesn't really post much in these threads but I'm pretty sure he reads every post for what not to do with next week's title.

Close between Dunkirk and Emoji. There's a morbid desire in me to see it actually win out just because Nolan fans are some of the most insufferable people and I want them to see their God King dethroned by a movie where Patrick Stewart plays a literal walking piece of shit. Dunkirk will make more than Lucy in the US, yet Lucy numbers was what Besson was hoping for for Valerian. Besson films are stronger outside of the US, and while I'm sure he didn't make Valerian thinking it was going to bomb in America, Lucy numbers would still be below Dunkirk.

Hundreds of millions of dollars aren't actually WORTH hundreds of millions depending on where those hundreds of millions are made.
