I've never even heard of Conspiracy Theory but this synopsis on IMDb is making me gigglesnort.
That brief summary makes the film sound way more interesting than it really is. It has its moments(spoilers, obviously) and Mel gives a pretty good performance, but the film never really gets fun enough or tense enough or crazy enough.

Definitely more character drama, but it was hardly compelling. Every scene of dialogue felt too long with little payoff and the plot having so much contrivance made me care even less.
I loved the second movie as well. Such a shame.

Just checked the rest of the week. In the last 24 hours the theater went from six Inhumans shows a day to three, with Dunkirk still playing in the noon and mid-afternoon times.

Seems like there are plenty of decent performers at the box office, it it just the flop of Pirates/Transformers/Mummy to blame? The superhero movies all did well and a lot of smaller movies exceeded expectations.

This has been a weird year for me. Normally apathetic about blockbusters each year, but I loved most I saw this year. At the same time there hasn't been that smaller drama that really resonated with me yet. But there are a number coming up and I still need to check out A Ghost Story.

The increasing rate of franchises/movies that had big drops domestically and got relatively saved internationally (those three plus Despicable Me 3) is what really hurts. You also had movies coming out and taking up prime release dates and then bombing (Baywatch for Memorial Day weekend, for example) which doesn't help the overall numbers. Even Fate of the Furious' domestic drop is a part of that trend (even if it was partially expected).

Next summer should be much, much better than this summer, though. Between Avengers 3, Han Solo (if it stays), Deadpool 2, Incredibles 2, and Jurassic World 2, you've got a bunch of movies that are less likely to bomb. And some movies that could break out (Ocean's 8, Sicario 2). And that's just May and June, haven't even gotten into July yet.
Edit: Also, looking at next August, we have:
Aug 3: The Predator, A Madea Family Funeral (will probably do a little better than Girls Trip since it's Tyler Perry), Disney Live Action movie (Maleficent 2? I don't know what would be in production fast enough to go there)
Aug 8-10: Barbie (a Sony Pictures production), Scarface
Shouldn't be as bad as this year.

Yeah, that's huge. Unless I missed one (which is possible as I read through the list) the biggest theater count for an R-rated movie is Alien: Covenant, at #186 on the list of widest opens, with 3,761.
I think that may be Enchanted 2 (Disenchanted).

Cars 3 is getting a huge theatre bump from 214 venues to 2445 venues this weekend. I doubt interest will be that great, but it will push the film past 150M domestic.

Per that article, it was scheduled to go into production this year and all of the original cast will be returning.
