Did a paramount exec hit an old witch and with her dying breath she whispered "Bronsonleer"?

Do the monsters fuck
GDSXtmm.gif

yes

I know this is mentioned every time the movie is brought up but dear lord what I wouldn't give to see the original child-screaming designs of those monsters.

Great, we've gone from tentacle porn to bukkake, and all about a movie about monster trucks.
Technically speaking it's not bukkake since it's only one alien ejaculating so it's only a facial.
I ,uh, mean, that's what wikipedia told me when I googled the terms which I had to do since I'm incredibly unfamiliar with them.

i keep forgetting rings even came out this year

feel like if that had a stronger push it would've done really well, ring is pretty seeped into pop culture

The Bye-Bye Man just popped up on Netflix and man did I forget that that was a thing.

As good as this year has seemed for horror films that's only because we keep purging the bad ones from our memories.

After typing up the chart for Paramount, I went back and looked at the rest of the Big 6's performance to date. Always fun to do every few months.

Here are the domestic grosses and production budgets for all wide releases (600+ theaters) from the big 6 plus Lionsgate in 2017.

Where it applies, boutique studios like Focus and Fox Searchlight have been lumped in with their parent companies. Because it gives a false impression to leave them out, I am including films that debuted in 2016, but had their wide release in 2017 (Hidden Figures, Live By Night, etc). I have also included La La Land. It was technically in about 700 theatres at the end of 2016, but made 80% of its gross (and saw a peak release of 3200 venues) this year.

Keep in mind that some of these films were just distribution deals, with the Domestic Distributor holding a relatively small stake (Rock Dog for instance).

WARNER BROS / NEW LINE

LEGO Batman $176M $80M
Kong: Skull Island	$168M $185M
Annabelle Creation	$105M (est)	$15M

Unforgettable $11M $12M
Live By Night $10M $65M
TOTAL $1563M $942M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 1.66x

Comments: Warner Bros is having a great year so far, with arguably the best performance of the big 6 to date. King Arthur and Live by Night were major hiccups, but they had plenty of hits to compensate.

Outlook for the rest of the year: WB has 5 more films this year: Ninjago, Blade Runner 2049, Geostorm, Justice League, and Father Figures (formerly Bastards). I think that both Ninjago and Justice League will do well. Blade Runner will be dependent on the budget, but I don't think that WB is footing the majority of that. Geostorm will be WB's third big bomb of the year. No idea about Father Figures.

UNIVERSAL / FOCUS

Girls Trip $115M (est)	$19M
Fifty Shades Darker	$114M $55M
The Mummy $80M $125M

Book of Henry $4M $10M
A Monster Calls $4M $43M
TOTAL $1304B $830M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 1.57x

Comments: Universal had a big boost from Get Out and Split this year, which made over $300M domestic on a combined budget under $15M. The Great Wall was another Legendary Studios bomb, but it did alright in China. Despicable Me and Fast and Furious continue to put people in seats. We have spent enough time talking about the Mummy.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Focus Pictures will likely release 3-4 more films this year, but it's impossible to guess how any of those will do. The Darkest Hour will probably get best Actor Buzz though. Universal has American Made, Happy Death Day, The Snow Man, Thank You For Your Service, and Pitch Perfect 3. Boxoffice.com has 4 of those in the $20-50M range. Pitch Perfect 3 will likely do well, but I think that it will follow the typical comedy pattern and see a sizable drop from the second film's gross. You can only recycle the same jokes so many times.

DISNEY

Cars 3 $152M $175M
TOTAL $1218M $765M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 1.59x

Comments: BatB and GotG2 were huge hits. Pirates 5 didn't crater nearly as badly as it could have, and had a respectable worldwide gross. Cars 3 probably sold a lot of toys. Not much else to say here.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Despite only having 7 films this year, Disney will likely take #1 for the third year running thanks to Star Wars. Most of us here also see big money from Thor Ragnarok. I'm not sure how Coco will do. On one hand, it has a lengthy Frozen short packaged with the film. On the other hand, Coco itself has almost no buzz. I suppose good reviews could help, but this feels like another off year for Pixar.

FOX / FOX SEARCHLIGHT

Wimpy Kid 4 $21M $22M
A Cure for Wellness	$8M $40M
Table 19 $4M $5M
TOTAL $968M $648M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 1.49x

Comments: Fox had a mixed bag this year. Logan did very well. Hidden Figures was a smash hit, and I am sure that The Boss Baby came in well over expectations. On the other hand, Apes and Alien disappointed, while Cure for Wellness bombed.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Fox and Fox Searchlight still have a ton of releases ahead this year, including a bunch of Oscar hopefuls. Of their bigger budget films, Kingsman is looking to perform in the same ballpark as the first film, Ferdinand will probably do alright, and boxoffice.com has Murder on the Orient Express at $85M domestic. No idea what the budget on that was though. I think that The Greatest Showman could perform well this holiday if reviews are on its side. We also have The Post by Spielberg this Christmas.

Smurfs Lost Village	$45M $60M
Underworld Blood Wars	$30M $35M
Life $30M $58M
Resident Evil 6 $27M $40M
Rough Night $22M $20M
TOTAL $732M $532M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 1.38x

Comments: Sony would be having a pretty rough year if it wasn't for Spider-Man (and Baby Driver to a lesser extent). The Emoji Movie did pretty well. Not so much the rest of their slate. China bailed out Resident Evil though.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Like Fox, Sony has a ton of awards type films coming out in the final months of this year. It is impossible to make guesses on most of those, as prestige dramas are highly dependent on reviews and public narrative at release. Sony has Flatliners out at the end of the month. Tracking doesn't have it making much, but the film was cheap ($20M), so it could be a modest success. Sony's only big budget film for the rest of the year is Jumanji. The internet hasn't been super kind to it, but I won't rule out the possibility of it grabbing some general audience attention, post-Star Wars. That said, Sony's track record with remakes leaves room for improvement.

Rock Dog $9M $60M
TOTAL $621M* $380M*

Dom Gross to Budget ratio* 1.63x

*not including The Glass Castle

Comments: Moving away from expensive films is mostly working for Lionsgate. Power Rangers didn't really pan out, but it wasn't a disaster domestically. Rock Dog bombed, but that was a Chinese film. I doubt Lionsgate was in for much. The rest of their lineup looks pretty favourable, with La La Land being a surprise smash hit.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Lionsgate has My Little Pony, Tyler Perry's Boo! 2, and Jigsaw next month. I think that all three will be at least modestly successful.

Rings $28M $25M
Mother! $20M (est)	$30M
TOTAL $355M $661M

Dom Gross to Budget ratio 0.54x

Comments: I think the results speak for themselves. Last I read, Transformers will end its theatrical run slightly in the red, even accounting for the international take. That was supposed to be their big tentpole for the year.

Outlook for the rest of the year: Daddy's Home 2 will likely follow the Paul Blart 2 pattern of comedy sequel drops, but it should still make money. Things don't look as good for Suburbicon. Downsizing won't make much of a difference either way.

Thank you for that post, K-Swizzle.

Just want you to know, it is much appreciated when you do this kind of footwork!

You and BGE should be getting paid for all this.

Things don't look as good for Suburbicon.

I remember seeing the trailer for that ahead of Wind River and thinking it looked pretty good, and was wondering why it was looking bad. Then I looked up reviews and they seem scathing and--wait this is about racism? That trailer completely lied about what type of movie it was, it was all Matt Damon's character owing money to the mob. In fact, I remember the only PoC was a black janitor that showed up for a split second.

So uh another Cinemascore of F maybe?

edit: Just watch this trailer and then read this. See what I mean?

I guess Clooney looked at it and felt bad that it had no black representation, and that would probably go down bad with a lotta people so he hamfisted some racial commentary in that's totally out of place

Damn good writeup there kswiston.

Lionsgate silently coming in with the best ratio is pretty surprising. I guess they had to smarten up once it was clear the big budget YA adaptations just weren't cutting it anymore.

Mother! was crap and deserves to flop. Pretentious mess. One of the few instances where I actually wanted to leave the cinema.

Wow. That's a rare achievement.

There have only been a handful of films in Cinemascore's history that received an F grade.

The list from a few years back: Killing Them Softly, Bug, I Know Who Killed Me, Dr T. and the Women, Wolf Creek, Darkness, The Box, The Devil Inside, Silent House and Steven Soderbergh’s Solaris.

I don't know if further films have joined that pantheon, besides Mother!

F Cinemascore makes for great taste. Did the Fountain also get an F? Neon Demon? Schizopolis? The Lobster?

If it wasn't for spiderman, baby driver would be the highest grossing Sony movie.
I am very glad Edgar wright's curse has lifted

Holy shit.

K-Swiss dropping some Damn knowledge here.

Kudos.

We should get BronsonLee to drop Burger King application forms on Paramount's Melrose lot in his biplane first thing Monday morning.

They might even appreciate it.

I'll be catching mother! on Tuesday assuming nothing gets in the way.

The only other Aronofsky film I've seen is Noah so I guess I'm in for an experience.

BO GAF's favourite Aronofsky?

I can't decide, but it's between The Wrestler and Black Swan.

Yup is easily between those too. Both are amazing movies but I really love Black Swan. Especially the music (as it's so much of Swan Lake). And the performances of Rourke and Portman are something special.

I'm probably on the opposite end of the spectrum according to most, but Noah really did it for me.

Second would probably be Requiem or The Fountain. It's always tied and a hard choice between the two.

I don't think I liked mother! but I appreciate that it was made, with its cast, at its scale.

I'm for The Fountain and The Wrestler as his top two.

Probably The Wrestler for me but then again Requiem had an indelible effect on me during my younger years. Black Swan is great too. I didn't really like Pi or The Fountain very much, never saw Noah, yet to see his latest.

I’m going with The Fountain and mother! as his top two for me. The Wrestler and Black Swan tied for third.

I need to see mother! again soon though. Hopefully bring some friends along for the ride.

I can already tell Mother! will rub me the wrong way. I could barely make it through Neon Demon, especially the last 15 mins which felt like an improv class. Both movies seem to getting similar divisive reactions.

Pi gets a DEE?
I appreciate the big ideas he's going for, plus trying to do so on a such small. But... I don't think he succeeds, I don't like the main's acting, and Aronofsky doesn't have the command at that point to make the editing not annoying.

I would love to see what the Aronofsky of today would do with the film.

If it wasn't for spiderman, baby driver would be the highest grossing Sony movie.
I am very glad Edgar wright's curse has lifted

Back in late June or early July, I said that Baby Driver could end up being in Sony's Top 10 since the start of 2013 (their last 5 years of releases). That happened.

The reaction to Mother! is pretty hilarious to watch.

nerd: Christ, what happened to originality in movies? All that's left these days is Marvel shit and sequel after sequel. What happened to the days when auteurs could release true pieces of cinema?

Aronofsky: Okay, here you go

nerd: jesus FUCK

It feels like it. I had a good time seeing the people who were visibly and audibly disgruntled once it ended. My sister hated it and was not pleased she saw it.

Gotta soak this shit in. I doubt we'll get something like this in awhile from Hollywood.
