I knew that TDKR is going to be a phenomenon but when I read this piece about the BFI's IMAX screen in London in the Hollywood Reporter it blew my mind....

The venue, operated from Wednesday July 17 by Europe's largest exhibitor Odeon, for the British Film Institute, said there have been over 60,000 tickets bought and 43 shows sold out so far for the Warner Bros. release this week.

In total, 43 shows are now sold out, including screenings for early birds at 04.25 and 04.55 this weekend.

Actually BOM is counting on a big midnight opening for TDK. They estimate that TDKR will make $30 million on Thursday midnight opening, which will offset the 3D difference.

I have a feeling that people are low balling the midnight numbers for TDKR with the $30m estimates I've seen kicking around the net.

If Harry Potter can set a record with $43m (with 3D pricing admittedly) then TDKR should be able to do close to $40m.

I don't know, this was TDK first weekend:

Among the other notches on The Dark Knight's utility belt are records for IMAX opening (around $6.3 million at 94 sites over the weekend), midnight opening ($18.5 million at 3,040 venues), single day gross ($67.2 million on Friday), Sunday gross ($43.6 million)

IMAX theatres are 3x now, and tickets are a bit more expensive (don't know how much, I'm from Spain), and $12 more millions from midnight showings, which could bring Friday over $90M (would be insane, Avengers Friday was $80M), Saturday is the real catch, $70M for Avengers, but I think Batman could hit $65M with a bit lower Sunday.

My guess is $190M.

is vampire hunter any good?

for those of you that answer, I'd also like to know what you thought of the book..

Oh, I was talking about their text where they set it as between $193 million and $228 million.
I think that's a quite safe (and wide) extrapolation range. My personal bet is 200mi.

Haven't read the book yet, but it's on my iPad. I thought the movie was pretty good and was clever with its twists on historical events. It's not great by any means and often seems rushed in some instances. The pacing is very uneven. But it's an enjoyable movie overall. It seems a lot of people that I know that didn't like it said it was because the concept was played so straight. But I think that's what makes it work. Trying to pass it off as a spoof would have failed miserably.

They were comparing it to other films that increased when they were the last in a trilogy. That is how they got that number.

I'm much more interested in Batman's overseas numbers than domestic (because it's guaranteed to do killer business in the US), TDK did really well but not amazing overseas, and the overseas market was already pretty big back then. While I'm pretty sure TDKR will do better, I wonder if it will do explosive numbers in other territories too.

I know, that's why I said extrapolation.

Just saying that those 35 millions (which I think it is a possible window on both ends) give a lot of room to be "wrong" on their number (214mi).
And I think that the expected midnight numbers will push it towards 200mi, not over [Avengers]. But they are used to reading box office numbers, I'm not.

Magic Mike almost at $100,000,000. :D

Impressive but I was expecting it to do better than that. I had a feeling that it could have climbed to $150m in the US though there is no doubting that $100m is very, very good for a film that cost less than $7m to make.

$27M for The Dark Knight Rises Midnights according to ERC.

Though there is no doubting that is a very impressive number I honest thought it would do better than this. Is that the final number? Because if it isn't then I could still see it creep closer to $30m.

Official midnight number increased to $30.6M

Wow. I see Avengers hit $18.5 million.

I wonder if some people might have to spit up the crow they ate in May so that others can now eat it.

Uhhh?

It was universally thought that TDKR would beat Avengers midnight opening. TDKR had far more of a fanboy rush for being the last of the Batman trilogy.

Honestly, I thought it would do better. Didn't even come close to Harry Potter's.

The official number increased from the $27M estimate to over $30M which is a good sign, but I think TDKR needs at least $90M today (including Midnights) to have a shot at the opening weekend record.

Warner Bros is not going to report numbers for TDKR this weekend out of respect for the shooting in Colorado.

We will get weekend numbers on Monday when the actuals come out.

Deadline Hollywood was estimating 80-85M on Friday including midnights

Talking about the totals when it's all said and done.

Other studios use Rentrack for numbers, so we will still see them through the weekend.
