'Real Steel' shows B.O. metal. Disney pic KOs weekend competish with $49.4 mil global

Not pulling any punches, Disney-DreamWorks' robo-Rocky "Real Steel" topped the global box office with an estimated $49.4 million, of which $22.1 million came from 19 overseas territories, including No. 1 postings in Australia, Mexico and Russia.

Domestically, the pic's $27.3 million debut take was more than enough to win the weekend, beating Sony's political thriller "The Ides of March," which bowed at $10.4 million through Sunday.

In a global market previously dominated by holdovers, "Real Steel" marks the first opening title to nab Stateside bragging rights in four weeks since "The Lion King" bowed on Sept. 16. Though more notably, the DreamWorks pic managed to knock Sony's "The Smurfs" from its eight-week reign atop the international B.O. (Sony has yet to report this weekend's grosses for "The Smurfs," but the film last weekend earned only $10.7 million without any new territories.)

The weekend's No. 3 domestic title, Warner Bros.' "Dolphin Tale," held well, down only 37% in its third frame for an estimated weekend gross of $9.2 million. Pic has cumed $49.1 million.

Meanwhile, Sony's Brad Pitt starrer "Moneyball" trailed in B.O. standing, with a projected $7.5 million, bringing the film's domestic tally to $49.3 million. Both "Moneyball" and "Dolphin Tale" have been playing nicely to their core adult and family audiences, respectively.

Increased traffic among families likely boosted weekend prospects for "Real Steel," with added opening power from fanboy auds. In fact, Imax reported for "Real Steel" a share of $3.2 million, which reps 12% of the film's total domestic bow.

Globally, "Real Steel" grossed $4.4 million from Imax, or roughly 9% of the pic's worldwide gross.

In Russia, the film earned $6.9 million, followed by Australia, where it opened to $5.3 million, with Mexico contributing $2.9 million.

I'm surprised Real Steel is making money, at all.

Why? Have you seen it? It's a fun movie, sure it won't win any awards, but go with friends or family and enjoy a boxing movie. To me, it really captured the "Rocky" feel to it.

The trailer for Real Steel looked like shit. Is the movie entertaining?

That´s one helluva praise.

27 million? Didn't they say they expected a 70 million weekend for Real Steel? Fucking lol. But a awesome movie nonetheless.
If anyone was expecting over $35 million opening for Real Steel they should be fired.

The positive impressions of 'Real Steel' and the likeability of Hugh Jackman make me want to go see it, but I can't until next weekend.

Not sure where you heard that, ~$30M was the projected number being thrown around before opening. Plus, it's October; the biggest October opening ever was $50M for the last Jackass movie.

lol at people surprised at the quality of REAL STEEL. How can you people be so bad at watching trailers? It was guaranteed to be a decent family film.

However, I am more concerned with the per-screen performance of HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2.

I hope Real Steel does well, it reminds me of truly awesome movies of my childhood. Like Robot Jox, Robot Wars, and Arena.

$12 million? That´s really cheap. Studios need to encourage more of these low budget movies.
Yup. Clooney said this during an interview with Charlie Rose. I personal thought the movie was great, especially the 2nd half. Every character had their moment to shine on screen. The writing and directing was top notch. A real thinking man's thriller.

Real Steel looked soooooo bad. I'm surprised it did as okay business, but I guess there wasn't much competition. The premise of it just seems so incredibly stupid.....

Real Steel was truly horrendous, can't believe how many people bought into the cheese. The Ides of March was quite good on the other hand, wish it did better.

I saw The Lion King today. Nice 3D conversion, plus the fact that that film is fucking great, equals a nice wad of cash well earned by the Mouse House.

I wanna see 50/50 already :(

I refuse to believe Real Steel is even half decent. Seriously- the trailer was the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen in my life. Like "how the hell is this even being made" bad.

Real Steel was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I thought I would. Need to see Ides of March soon now.

Likaeable actor helps stereotypical white blonde boy.

There's a market for that.

And the Ides of March didn't exactly get great reviews. A radio show was discussing how, having run out of leads, Hollywood is just cherry picking pretty but mediocre actors and shoehorning them as leads in as many movies as possible hoping it sticks.

I haven't seen the film, but what stereotypes are depicted?

I haven't either, I was commenting on the trailer, same as the person I responded to .

Oh, what stereotypes are in the trailer?

Blonde people have blond hair?

Boys are boys?

I don't know how to answer that question.

Only that pairing a likelable actor to help a white aryan boy is fairly bankable Hollywood fare. And I enjoy those films as much as the rest of the world.

It wasn't meant to offend but I'm not into the PC business of not saying what I mean.
I left that in the 90s.

You said something about stereotypes, so I was wondering what stereotypes were being depicted. Not a trick question.

Maybe archetypal would be better, but I reserve that term to discuss characters in a narrative/story I've actually seen.

The stereotypes that IRC from the trailer
- young boy of the right race
- pretty
- from what appears to be a broken home in need of a father figure
- the trailer implies Jackman is the father figure that set the story in motion
- Jackman is a plausible father figure and isn't ugly either.
- Though Jackman's character is the lead, the story is about the boy

These are stereotypes about blonde boys? I have learned something today. :p

It looked pretty inoffensive to me, so I thought I had missed something in the trailer.

As I phrased it.
"stereotypical white blonde boy."

white and blonde are used as the adjectives use to describe the stereotypical boy.

It was a jab at the audience's racial preference for these kinds of roles.

Well it has worked for George Clooney for most of his career!
