Wolfenstein: The Old Blood announced ($20, standalone, PC/XB1/PS4)

The standalone companion game is one of my favorite recent trends. It saves budget for the studio, makes them more profit, provides more content than a thrown together DLC, and allows for less risky experimentation with mechanics than a full fledged sequel would.
Agreed 100%. Hope more companies start doing the same

Nazis are well-known for their crimes against humanity, but I'd like to see games use other historical events as their core. For instance, why aren't there games about Soviets? Something about the crimes committed by Stalin could be the base for an interesting game. I just feel the Nazi theme is overused and a bit bland. Just like zombies. Doesn't help when the game feeds you both either.

Wolfenstein was honest-to-God a decade before the WW2 shooter craze. Kind of a silly thing to bring up in a Wolfenstein thread.

The entire basis of the Wolfenstein series is killing Nazis. Why would they suddenly care about making a game about Soveits? This seems like a weird place to bring up this complaint.

I really like the trend of cheaper, smaller standalone episodes of bigger series.

Will get it, most probably before I even get The New Order.

I mean, then don't bother with Wolfenstein.

Russians have been the enemy in so many games, that's not exactly novel either.

I prefer the games aping the cold war aesthetic tho satirically, like Papers Please and Tomorrow Children.

Wolfenstein is the OG Nazi killin simulator. I wouldn't be opposed to some different enemies likes soviets, but Nazis have to be the main enemy as they are the perfect representation for over the top, almost cartoonishly pure evil, and occult that Wolfenstein thrives on.

This is awesome. Love the idea of cheaper standalone expansions like this and I really enjoyed New Order so I'll definitely cop this.

The story and characters are what really made Wolfenstein The New Order an outstanding game in the FPS genre. My anticipation for this stand alone became muted after watching the trailer -- hopefully they did put some effort into a story and will reveal it later.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed. They are well aware of why people liked TNO, and story and characters were of utmost importance to them in that experience and I highly doubt they would change their design philosophy for this.

According to the description on youtube

Available digitally and in retail for £14.99 from May 5 for the PlayStation 4 and PC, and digital only for the Xbox One, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood takes our hero BJ Blazkowicz back to the year 1946 in an adventure that spans eight chapters and two interconnected stories (released together) that will lead into the events you know and love from The New Order.

The main game had 16 chapters, so this standalone seems to be half of the length. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's turn out longer than that.

Agreed, this looks like loads of fun.

Both Infamous & Black Flag were games I knew I'd get bored with if I played a fully fledged version. I thoroughly enjoyed First Light & Freedom Cry and neither outstayed their welcome.

Wow. The art direction on this title is incredible. The screenshots look like concept art. I had to enlarge them to make sure the OP didn't mistake them for screenshots.

You thought inFamous second son outstayed its welcome? For real?! That game was super short.

I'm guessing this is stand alone DLC along the lines of First Light or Gat out of Hell, considering it's coming out so soon.

I think I'd rather want an actual sequel that deals with the aftermath of the end of TNO, but I'll totally play more Wolfenstein regardless.

Or Far Cry Blood Dragon

Oh my god yes!

I loved TNO, but I want a return to RTCW's aesthetic and era. This looks like it could be close to that!

No, I assumed I wouldn't wanna play a whole game of it. I felt satisfied after First Light, I wouldn't want to have played much more Infamous free roam after that.

Infamous:SS is pretty short even if you find all the shards and do all the side missions. It only really drags on if you replay the opposite karma path immediately, as most of the missions are the same.

I agree with your original point though, I thought Wolfenstein: TNO dragged on in the last level. These kinds of standalone DLC seem less likely to have filler levels like that.

Just did two playthroughs on Wolfenstein: TNO on Uber. The more I play it, the more I fall in love with it. Haven't enjoyed a single-player FPS campaign so much since FEAR 1 or Crysis 1.

This is gonna be a day 1 purchase.

Nazi's are the most infamous villains of all time, and they have a very recognizable name, logo, and leader.
