Wolf's Rain - any good?

I just caught an episode on CN (the one where the wolves fight some giant walrus) - seems to have a "deep" storyline - is this series worth picking up? Any fans out there who could tell me more about it?

I haven't seen it in awhile, I started watching when it was still just being subbed by fans. The wolves can change into human form but basically still have their animal instincts. They end teaming up to find "paradise", some wolf legend about that being the perfect place for them.

The series is good, but you should skip about 4 episodes. There are like 4 recap episodes towards the end of the series, its really really uncalled for...each recap is about the wolves themselves and how they got where they're at, but its just a clip show...4 times. And the thing that really pisses me off about it is the fact that they teamed up pretty early in the series, so a clip show for each one doesn't even serve a purpose since it doesn't really show any details about their past. I can't remember which ones should be skipped, I want to say 16-19.

And the theme song does rock, I use to listen to it while playing Gunbound. One of the very few songs I actually like.

When does it air on CN?

Oh and the music is courtey of Yoko Kanno...whom I went out with back in 1999 when she visted LA for AX '99 :)

It's not even that, really. They are always wolves, but by their own choice they can make humans perceive them to human. Bones does a good job of trying to sidestep any science involved, though, which is needed given how all of the technology basically is indistinguishable from magic, the world's coming to an end, so on and so forth...

The recap eps were a bugger; they aren't really so bad to watch given the concept (sort of summing up their goals before the big final arc), but if you're paying attention while watching the show you really can just skip em and move to the final episodes where everything blows up. I'm not entirely happy about how the series ends (both in script and how it was carried out), but it still was a solid 'B' grade show.

DrF, if you hate that ED, you may need to watch a lot more anime. I not only think it's good, but heads above most of the stuff that seems to get aired. ([Edit]: Okay, if you're talking about the show ending...well, it wasn't the worst. It was vague and all, but only 90% of all anime series seem to do that...)

Very good, just avoid the last 5 minutes at all costs. One of the worst endings i've ever seen....

DrForester really has no idea what he's talking about. The ending is perfect. Wolf's Rain is a great series and as one of the most unique anime series to come around in awhile. Bones never disappoints. :)

Which one? The one at Ep. 26 that
doesn't effing explain anything about paradise
or the "real" one at Ep. 30 that
kills off everybody, and reveals that paradise is basically world ending/rebirth?

The latter. It perfectly syncs with the worldview of the show and closes the chapter of the story really well. Last time I checked, DrForester loved the ep26 ending though... I mean, I liked it too but to say that is "perfect" and the actual ending is "the worst ending ever" is just.... illogical. :)

You'd think since it was derived from the bebop people it'd have more action. It's dull and boring from the eps that I've seen. They barely turn into wolves, and if they do it's for a split second or when they're sitting around talking to someone. And then there's the fact they every episode they're runnin somewhere but hardly every explain it. They apparently have to go find some chick for some odd reason. Blah.

It was a promising show, but i stopped watching when there was like 4 or 5 flashback episodes in a ROW. Talk about budget cut.

It had nothing to do with the budget. The show was planned as a 26 episode series with no recaps and that's what it is. With the 4 recaps it was bumped to 30 episodes. The only reason they even exist is because there was to be a 4 week break for some reason (production, schedule, whatever) but FujiTV said no, and wanted something to air. So they patched together 4 recaps to satisfy the network, nothing more.

Well, I picked up the first 2 volumes today - and I got to say, I'm glad I did. I'm only 3 eps in though, but from what I've watched, this series is exactly what I wanted. The story is so far interesting, the animation rocks and even the english dub is very good.

Very happy I picked this one up. Though I couldnt bring myself to spend an extra 20 bucks for the box, soundtrack and some stuffed pup - too bad, I really would have liked the box... oh well, one of my best choices this year in anime.

Good decision. :D

I loved Wolf's Rain. And the ending rocked. :p I'll be picking up the DVDs when all volumes are out. Btw you won't have to worry about the recap episodes since, if I remember correctly, they'll be included as extra episodes.

This is exactly the wrong perspective to have when viewing Wolf's Rain. Yes, it was created by a good chunk of the Bebop team, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will be filled with gunfights and the like. Sometimes studios like to take a chance and be creative and try something new and fresh. As for that "some chick" they have to find, she's Cheza, the flower maiden who will pretty much lead them to Rakuen, I swear they explained that early on in the show (haven't seen the version on CN, my knowledge comes from fansubs and the sub track on Bandai's discs).

As for the four recap episodes, no one is exactly sure how Bandai is going to handle them, whether it be at the end ala Chobits' 7th disc, or in the middle.

I don't know if the comment about Bones a few posts back ^^ is true but at the time, they were in deep financial trouble so having 4 back-to-back recaps weren't really what they intended.

This is Bones we're talking about here. If they do make a recap episode in their series, not counting Wolf's Rain, it will still be a 'decent' recap episode, unlike the Chobits recaps that was just plain disgusting.

So, did you do her? I mean, is the music I'm listening to now inspired by you? :p

Nah...

I just kicked it with her for a while and then had dinner with her at the restaurant in the hotel that the con was being held in. It was really nice. She's a really nice, down to earth and funny person. Didn't have any of her Cds with me for her to autograph, but I did get plently of home video footage of her and I conversating, joking around, etc...as well as her answering Q and A during her panel at the con....plus a some footage of her playing piano at her concert recital after the panel, which really REALLY kicked ass! AX '99 was the best anime con... ever.

Well - I just picked up volume 4 - Recollections - and the first 3 episodes I've watched are nothing but recaps - and the last 2 look to be the same.

:(

Too bad - was really looking foward to seeing some new episodes - very letdown.

I don't get why people hate the ending. I liked it. I also liked the ending for Scrapped Princess, and people seem to hate that one too...

Studio BONES = good, SATISFYING, endings.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
I've been watching the series off and on on DVD. It's not bad, but it's not exactly captivating - seems to be a case of brilliant presentation (animation, music, etc) and a lackluster repetitive story. On the other hand, I'm watching the GITS: Stand Alone Complex episodes as I get them and it is fricken great...

havent watched the fansubs or the episodes on CN - decided to wait for the DVDs - so I dont know what the deal is with the ending (though I've read a lot of people love it on these boards) - but wtf is the deal with these recap episodes. I cant believe there is NO new footage on volume 4! What a rip off.

The second half of the series is substantially better.

Not to mention they cut out the recap episodes. They don't air those 4 episodes on Adult Swim.

Anyway, you'll probably want to wait a couple weeks before you really start watching. The show is very late into its run on Adult Swim right now, but it should be starting over pretty soon.

And I loved the ending. The last 4 episodes (the OVA episodes) >>>>>>> the main series.

So, yeah, Wolf's Rain is good stuff. It's weird actually. There was never a point where I felt the show was special or anything, and there wasn't any one moment where I knew I liked the show. Just, somewhere along the way I realized I had gotten very attached to the main cast, and I wanted to see what happened next. It wasn't exactly captivating or strongly gripping or anything, but by the end, I found that it had a strange sort of allure. I guess it's just because it's a very distancing plot and not something that's very easy to relate to really. It's a fairly slow to develop series, but I really kind of liked that about it.

So it's not exactly a top 5 anime or anything, but it is quite good and enjoyable, IMO.

That's what Wolf's Rain does best. If I hadn't gotten so attached to the characters the ending wouldn’t have meant much.

That really is a rip off. I always thought they'd make those episodes extras or release a double disk on whenever volume they are. I'm waiting for the box set to buy the series though. I skipped the Adult Swim airing just to keep it fresh when I re-watch it on DVD.

I've been watching it on CN during the adult swim run and I'm emjoying it, though being that I also surf the net while watching TV I haven't been following the story.

But for the record let me state that....

GitS SAC has the BEST ANIME OPENING CREDIT INTRO.......

E-V-A-R!!!!!

YK took it to a whole 'nother level with the way she managed to gel her music with the visuals(particularly the scene when Makoto's shown kneeling and emptying the clip on somebody). Fucking awesome!

I completely agree. Some people have no taste or just want every type of ending to be the SAME type they like. BONES on the other hand picks endings that are PERFECT for whatever show they're doing. I've seen every single BONES show up to now and their endings have NEVER disappointed. Not once. Kurau's awesome finale continues this traditional and I'm looking forward to Eureka Seven a lot. :D
