Anyone with experience with volunteer vacations? The Peace Corps commitment is too long and intense... but I'd like to spend about two 2-month periods volunteering while traveling.

1. Please no programs that involve passing out religious texts.
2. Programs that don't involve paying a ton of money to volunteer would be good.
3. Maybe community, ecological, or research volunteering?

Some larger companies have volunteer programs the employees can sign up in, but they are usually local to the community where the person works/lives.

International Student volunteers, although they might not fit #2.

1 month trips, usually, and the first two weeks is the volunteer work, while the second two weeks is an "adventure tour" of travelling around the country doing touristy-stuff.

Last year I went to the Dominican Republic for a month and it was probably the most amazing experience of my life.
