Worldwide Console & Game Sales Thread

Shall we cut right to the chase? "Shipped vs. Sold OMGZ"

Not really an important distinction with hardware sales as they are usually in short supply at retailers.

Or, "How many of those broke and had to be rebought?"

A similar proportion accross all platforms if their similar attach rates are any indication.

20,000,000 XBOXs sold eh? So Microsoft only has to sell 980 million more next gen to reach a billion! Almost there.

You do realize Microsoft never said anything about selling 1 billion consoles, right?

XBOX has 4 ports so there are potentially 80M users right now, only 920M more to go (or 230M more 360's). :P

So, what... Microsoft will sell another 20 million consoles and have an average of 50 players to a console? Where did Microsoft pull this one billion number from?

i always thought the 1 billion figure is for the ENTIRE games industry? not just microsoft?

Someone explain to me why sales numbers are so important to you people?

Would you love your PS2 less if it was in last place sales wise?

I bet I would love my Gamecube more if third part games sold better on it.

The thing about that comment is it's really intended to be an inspirational comment for the industry. Right now, more people enjoy movies, music, television and movies than they do video games.

Our revenue growth is great, right? If you look at all the numbers, you say, "We're doing great as an industry." Well, we force everybody to go buy new hardware every five years. That helps. Our average selling point of content is $50 or $42 or whatever you want to call it. That helps, right? And the fact that we have such an enthusiast [base] that consumes so much, it drives up those numbers.

That's great, but how do we invite people back in and turn the world into gamers? To think that there are a billion people in the world that can read or watch movies or play music, nobody would scoff at that. But if you say, 'We're going to get a billion people to go play games,' that's a big dream.

And so, it's more a challenge to the industry to say, 'Hey, we're all going to appeal to the core [gamers] , but let's all do our part to take it to the next level.'
.

sales = more games

Eh, all three consoles get their share of great games. If you really want to play all of them you have to own all three.

It just gets annoying to see how much emphasis is placed on sales numbers. I keep a mild interest in it only to see if a game I liked sold well enough to deserve a sequel, but I could care less how much a console sold in the last month.

Oh, I see how it is. Sales only matter when they are games *you* care about. :D
