They knew about it beforehand, or at least they knew it was coming. MS released there monthly patches a while back, and then reports came out of virus code in work around the internet. A couple days after the new MS patches came out I started getting stuff like this from CERT, SANS, MS, etc. in my inbox

Yep, but there is a difference in knowing there is a problem coming and being able to make sure 20k or so workstations are upgraded. Boxes sitting in server rooms, laptops that have been in the field during upgrade cyckes, and machines running versions of Windows for all sorts of arcane services are usually a problem is all but the smallest corporations.

I knew this sort of thing was brewing - a caught a glimpse of an Internet Storm Center handler's diary on Monday. Check it out - http://isc.sans.org/

The handlers are basically NOC technicians on-duty that watch for signs of new exploits making the rounds. They capture exploits and do some testing to see what the payloads are and how they propigate. They'll also run tests on the exploits to see which virus scanners and OS patches block/remove them.

I hope that worm took over my workplace and they send us home when we arrive. :)

Why hope when you can make it happen. ;)

i'm using a Linux PC as a gateway, and i've got a software firewall (Sygate Personal Edition) on my XP PC here. i've closed all other ports except those i use frequently on this box as well. Still haven't upgraded to SP2, no reason to. i probably will the next time i install XP on this machine, which won't happen in the foreseeable future.
