Heh, I got my DS on my birthday and was surprised the next day that the opening tone sounded different (and would be the normal sound). At first I thought the speakers were busted or something.

Ha ha that's rather humorous. I too would have thought my speakers were busted. Making another sound effect would have taken too much space (yes even bytes and kilobytes are precious) so changing the tone was a cheap and efficient gesture for the system to note your birthday.

yeah, i was trying to low-key my birthday at work but then i jumped into a pictochat session and my cover was blown. thanks a lot nintendo!
