Worst soundtrack in a game?

Speevy said:
The Ninja Gaiden soundtrack isn't that good period.

Ninja Gaiden didn't even really have a soundtrack. All I remember is that damn "Town' theme that you keep backtracking all over in, and the final battle theme (which was good).

I guess 'no soundtrack' is better than 'a bad soundtrack' :lol

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance's music is horrible. I was really disappointed, since I had expected the usual great CV-quality music. :-/

The original Rygar. Themes varied from doo-doo-DOOO-doo-doo all the way to DOO-doo-doo-doo-doo.

But I do have to agree Prince of Persia 2 was pretty darn awful.

Crazy Taxi:

"Ya-ya-ya-ya. Day after day you something and something. And then you something and something and something!"

The Offspring. Every two minutes.

Cruisin' USA. CRUISIN' FUCKIN' USA....

What the freak am I listening to? Gay porno music!????? Eeek!

That's what I was gonna say...my first thought when I heard the music was "What is this...arrrgghhh."

Tailspin for the Genesis also has some pretty bad, repetetive music, but nowhere as earbleedingly bad as Cruisin' USA.

sonic adventure and halo 2 stick out in my mind as being particularly awful...

halo 2? is this comedy?

i remember absolutely hating MSR's music, but i hear a lot of people on this board say its great, so maybe i should give it another shot...

Definitely that shitty "Blue Blue Skies" song from Daytona, and that "Escape From the City" in Sonic Adventure 2. Also the entire Kingdom Under Fire: The Crudaders/Heroes soundtracks, and, sadly, most of ANYTHING in Dynasty Warriors. Butt rock *has* to be eradicated from gaming. Only GGXX has done quality thrash rock justice.

Other notable horrors: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Breath of Fire 3, and anything else "jazzy" from Capcom. Ugh!

Resident Evil: Director's Cut Dual Shock

It would suck if Deadly Silence used that version's soundtrack, but judging from the official site, that looks to be the case.

I second this. I don't much care for RE soundtracks as it is, and some of the new tracks in REDCDS sounded like someone tooling around on their new synthesizer.

Oh snap, I agree with Drinky.

Anything with EA 'Trax'

Really. I'm not EA trolling either. I just can't fucking stand the types of music they put in there

Come to think of it, licensed music in general is a bit of a pet peeve for me. I'd rather they have unique soundtracks that are built with the game in mind, rather than whatever they thought would be hot on the radio. Yuck.

I detest them so much that I can't play any game that has 'Trax' as a soundtrack.

And I don't like custom soundtracks either (strange, but again, I'd usually rather hear custom music)

There are a few exceptions - rare is the year I don't have some fast paced music for my competitive fps of choice on the pc.

As for a specific game? R4. I wanted to love that game, but the music was soooooo lame

edit:

OH AND FUCKING JEREMY FUCKING SOULE AHHHHH FUCK GET OUT OF OBLIVION YOU NO TALENT ONE TRACK ASSCLOWN

Yes, the men responsible for putting licensed music in games are going to hell for sure.

Sonic Adventure 2:
"Follow me! Blah blah blah! Suck my cock and we'll escape to the city," whatever they sing. Good god, hand me a fork so I can gouge my ears out, please.

Gran Turismo 2:
"SUPER BON BON SUPER BON BON!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

worst soundtrack?

DEFINITELY:
Bubble Bobble (all systems!)

the worst version is the game boy version. my ears started bleeding only seconds after starting the game!

Another vote for the Sonic Adventure games. The only thing that can possibly make it worse is remembering that the original Sonic the Hedgehog had one of the most engaging and memorable soundtracks ever.

Toejam & Earl III, while we're on the subject of bad Sega games.

Suikoden IV. Total vanilla, and hard to swallow with the standard in RPGs as high as it is.

Pfft. Feel the Magic's music is awesome, at least the original piece of music is. The "backwards" sounding one isn't too good though.

FTM 2 has similar music design, but other chants, something very similar to the old Genesis Lemmings game.

The music made me think that it would be awesome if Sonic Team made a Lemmings clone using the FTM Liscence. Having a horde of mindless guys bashing through walls and jumping off cliffs in order to get a kiss from the girl at the end of the course.

DO IT SEGA

Probably not the worst ever, but one of the few that was so bad compared to previous iterations - Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2. The torture started in the cool intro movie. Serph walking along in that desolate environment, his dusty footprints inspiring a feeling of gloom and frustration, torments to come. Statues caught in the act of suicide, utter torment, loss, hate. I had big smiles then... confirmed suspicions, of the holocaust to come, expecting some taciturn piano nocturne to underscore the emotional turmoil. Then... horrific, mind-blowingly bad J-Pop tunes start blasting out of my speakers. I actually launched out of my chair, yelling "for the love of Christ!", thinking (hopefully) that a web site had loaded on my computer, playing some embedded midi, but, sadly, that ear-grating garbage was coming from the opti link on my PS2. The game's music didn't get much better - though it did go from head-shakingly bad (battle music) to passably tolerable (later levels.) It did make me sad for the awesome fiend music of Nocturne... you knew something was going to happen! It made you feel that you were a part of something beyond your control... not that... you'd been given a waiting ticket number at the Techno Doctor 24 hour room clinic.

Besides that... Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance's songs were horrible, at least compared with others in the series.

Jet Set Radio Future's soundtrack is horrendous. It would just be medicore but Birthday Cake is some evil shit. Seriously, what a fucking terrible song. Just thinking about it makes me angry. I don't get the praise for the game's music at all..

I was just about to post "How did this thread get so long without a mention of Birthday Cake?" and then I finished scrolling down the thread to your post.

Just glancing over the posts, I didn't see what I would nominate as THE worst...

Jak and Daxter

It wasn't offensive music by any means, but it was dull to the point that it actually detracted from the game. I still believe that, had the soundtrack to the game been of good quality, I may have enjoyed it. However, it failed to bring ANYTHING to the experience. It was just so generic and poorly composed.

Along those same lines, the second GBA Castlevania gets my vote as well. Could they have composed a more BORING soundtrack?!

Oh, what the hell, let's throw in Suikoden III. Talk about disappointment. The trailers AND intro were set to an AWESOME piece of music that nearly sold me on the game by itself...but the actual tunes contained within the game were completely generic and worthless.

Oh, and I am completely STUNNED by the mention of Halo 2. What the hell are you thinking?! That's one of the most fitting and finest soundtracks around today. Not only is the music itself fantastic, but it is molded to each and every scene in the most perfect fashion. Halo 1 and 2 both deserve mad props for their music and its usage.

Also wanted to address...

PRINCE OF PERSIA 2: WARRIOR WITHIN

At least, this wins "Most out of place music".
I think people are a bit too harsh on this one. Yes, the battle music and "angsty" rock IS out of place and I certainly didn't appreciate it...but the non-battle music is fantastic. Seriously, a lot of the music used during exploration or puzzle solving is really well done (better than anything in the original game). The whole situation reminds me of Primal in a way. The orchestral soundtrack was incredible...but the rock music chosen for combat was COMPLETELY out of place. Thankfully, they allowed you to disable the combat tunes...

Dude, I feel that way about so much music, it's not even funny. As Michael Jackson, the great one,* once sang: You are not alone.

* = j/k

(Re: Bubble Bobble)

Well, the Bubble Bobble song is cute, but you have to listen to it on loop again. And again. And again. And again. I mean, the fucking thing is like 45 seconds long and there's like 100 levels. That is a bonafide recipe for a fucking nervous breakdown.

Holy shit-Sonic Adventure and Daytona music were listed?!

You fuckers are crossed eyed evil as fuck. :lol

Next you're going to start listing Sega Rally because its all butt rock as well, that's some of the best guitar playing ever in a video game, and goes with the intensity of the racing.

What?? Marvel vs Capcom 2's music is what made the game so awesome!

IAWTP

And what is with all the mentioning of Harmony of Dissonance? It had far better compositions than Aria of Sorrow at least. I consider non of them bad.

The only music that has ever bothered me was probably the first Road Rash on the Genesis. The stages' music had such a terrible bass theme layed over them*bow, bow, bow,* sorta like someone farting along in real time.

ROLLING START

:lol That brings back a lot of memories.

I'm not too sure how this topic works. Admittedly, Daytona had a terrible soundtrack but in its mediocrity it made the game more enjoyable because it became a part of the experience. Therefore it's hard for me to actually say it's a bad soundtrack. It's sort of like those campy horror movies that are so bad they're good.

Horrible, horrible music.. but not as bad as EA Trax

I thought the intro music was the best i heard in a very long time.

Anway my choice goes for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

Jezus christ the horror...

Feel The Magic - it's the same song repeated over and over again and that one song is annoying as hell!

Oh Drinky - video games and buttrock are as inseparable as wine and cheese or peanut butter and jelly...

Any Naughty Dog game.. Crash and Jak soundtracks are some of the worst music I've ever heard.

FFX2 - Awful, awful stuff. There's only one halfway decent track in the whole soundtrack.

It has to be something on the Lynx or the Jaguar.

One of the weirdly notable things about the Lynx and Jaguar is that Atari still hadn't quite gotten the message that music had become an essential part of video games. A good chunk of Lynx and Jag games were still "silent"... and the games that had a soundtrack seemed to have a lousy one.

Now to sit back and be attacked by the Lynx/Jaguar contingent.
