would it be wise to wait for a revised iteration of PSP?

do you think it would be a good idea to hold off on PSP for now, waiting for a 2nd or even 3rd iteration of it-- or even just a new model number of the current version, or whatever.

the advantages I see are:

-less problems than with the first-generation PSP
-possibly smaller semi-conductor process which conserves battery life
-possibly a better battery that further extends battery life
-lower price
-more games

I don't see myself getting a PSP late this winter or this spring. I might not even get one this year. but I am definitally still interested in the PSP. I think it's going to eventually be THE portable to own, along with the true next-gen GameBoy. but I don't feel like there is any advantage to getting a PSP anytime within the next few months for all kinds of fairly obvious reasons.

How soon can we expect a new model number PSP, or a new iteration of the hardware
( i dont mean PSP-2 just a revised version of the current PSP) ??

pro - you don't have to deal with the first run of Sony's flakey hardware
con - you don't get to play GTA PSP on day one like all right-thinking people

I'll wait for a bit, at least until I see what Rockstar has up their sleeves.

I'm waiting. It's always best to I find, with any system, unless you can get it cheap or really, really can't resist some of the games.

Aside from price and quality issues, I really hope they bring out some different colours. Of all the different colours they showed at whatever gameshow, I wanted black one of the least, if not the least.

I think it's smart to wait just a little bit. Why?

Two reasons:
1) New hardware typically has some bugs
2) New hardware from Sony definitely has some bugs

;)

I wouldnt wait, it might be nearly impossible to get a PSP for a 2-3 months after launch.

Take your chances at the hardware, Sony said they fixed the issues with the square button and im confident the launch PSP's will be a-ok.

It's better to wait, let the rich guinea pigs do the beta testing.
Then once the bugs are fixed, get one. (Usually 6 months - 1 year I find.)
:D

the ONLY thing that is tempting me is Ridge Racers. it has the first *released* home appearance of a Rave Racer track.

but since I can already play the full Rave Racer arcade game, emulated fairly accurately and very fast (VivaNonno!) that should keep me from splurging on a PSP when it hits U.S. shores.

yet, i could easily cave in and get a PSP when it comes out. money is not the problem, but i don't like wasting it.

yeah I will wait until it's $150 or at most, $200, but that would be with all the improvements & fixes that a second revision brings.

I'll be waiting, myself. The price and Sony's hardware quality rep are enough...also, I don't want to get burned over any possible "PSP SP" that might come out in the semi-near future.

I'll be waiting for a long time before picking up the PSP. I hope there is some truth to the rumour that there will be a new version with a 50GB hdd.

i'd kill for a unit with the screen from TGS.

The Namco Museum 2d old school games are driving me nuts.

This isn't Nintendo. You won't get a "colour" or "sp" version.

You'll get the PSP. They'll change the hardware internally every so often to make it cheaper.

So you're just waiting for a price drop then. Which will probabaly be a year.

Any reason why not? If they get an internal battery that lasts 10 hours and is flip top like the SP, that would be an instant sale for me.

Buy a battery and get some Saran Wrap

I'm waiting too. I'm thinking a year is enough... though I still wont buy it if it’s not $150 by that time.

Nintendo ain't the only one guilty of remodelling systems. PSPee anyone?

Come on, that's different. It's cosmetic only for PSOne and PSTwo.

So if you want to wait until just before the PSP2 (4 years+) comes out to get a smaller version, be my guest.

Yeah I'll pipe up and say it's wise to wait. Already with so much recent news the waiting game is paying off. When Sony tightens up their hardware and Nintendo stops bumfucking around, go for it.

I want one of those damn white Grand Turismo edition PSPs, just without the GT logo. It stands out and probably doesn't show greasy finger smears as easily. Or maybe a nice gunmetal grey PSP...

I'm waiting till the price drops to $99-129 or until it comes with an HDD. (if that turns out to be true)

While i understand the wait for a price drop, thats just insane. by the time the psp drops to that price, we'll have flying cars. Flying cars i say!

Even though I regret buying a ds at launch (most disappointing system purchase since the jaguar imo), I'm willing to shell out $250 on day one for a psp. Ridge Racers on my commute is gonna be the balls.

Wise to wait for a revision? Probably. After PS2, I don't see a point to buying Sony hardware ever again at launch, its as if they make their consoles to break. 11 months after taking the utmost care care of my launch PS2, it made some weird grinding noise.

Have a launch PS2 that still works? Great, I didn't ask. I don't care about your PS2.

My second PS2 is somewhat of the same story - taking the utmost care of it, yet it performs an odd allergy filter function not mentioned on the box or in the manual. All the dust in my living room seems to fing its way inside my PS2 and all over the lens. Its cool it keeps me from sneezing and having to dust the living room, but still.

Anyway, this thing is going to be fragile and the default battery life leaves much to be desired in my book. I didn't buy that peripheral battery shit for GBA SP, I won't make exceptions for another handheld. 10 hours by default for games is what I want and I think its a fair expectation.

Plus, the launch price is absurd, I honestly can't believe people will think this will fly off the shelves and rule the handheld market, especially in America. I think it will get a strong niche audience. but that's about it.

It depends on what you want it for I think, I've decided much to even my own suprise to pick one up. I don't knwo what games I'm gonna get but I just want one to mess around with that I can call my own. If I don't like it I'm sure ebay will be a kind friend.

Mostly I want to check out its media capabilities, odd considering that it was just those capabilities that I was least concerned about when the system was unveiled.

But yeah, if you don't have the money to waste, and you see no discernable reason to actually buy the thing then don't. Just wait 6 months and save yourself 200 bucks (system price drop, improved hardware, cheaper launch games etc.) , or hell even wait a year to see if it perhaps does somehow fail and its in the bargain bin at kmart.

Funny, we didn't ask you for another one of your hilariously tangental rants about the PS2.

Yes, by all means. Please wait for a revised PSP. I don't want to have to fight for one at or around launch day. Just walk in, get it and go.

Wipeout Pure is calling me, along with Ridge Racers and Lumines, so i'll be picking one up as soon as possible. Early adopters always get screwed in terms of cost and build quality versus those who wait a year or two. But then again, they get to play it a year or two before everyone else. It really depends on whether or not you can wait until the price drops or there's a hardware revision, and i'm willing to bet that at least a third of the people in this thread who are planning on waiting until then will find themselves owning a PSP sooner than they expected.

Getting an extended warranty with first gen Sony hardware is a must for me. It costs more, but i've had to deal with Sony's customer (dis)service far too much in the past to go without one. The thing to keep in mind is that the extended coverage begins AFTER the manufacturer's limited warranty is up, which is usually 90 days.

bear in mind that if you have a working PS2, you aren't very likely to post in a forum about it. So going by comments on a board doesn't mean Sony QA is bad.

I still have my Japanese launch PS2 and its fine, no problems at all. If something goes wrong with it, thats what the warranty is for.

Just buy an extended warranty people. It's not hard.

You would do the same if you bought an iPod. Those break down pretty easily also.

If you get a faulty square button. Take it back or call Sony.

wise maybe but if you keep waking for the next revision of soemthing you will always be window shopping

My thought exactly! If you draw the analogy with PCs, if you wait for the next iteration you'll always be wating as there always is something new on the horizon. Buy a PSP now? No, wait 'til the the next revision. Buy the new revised PSP now? No, wait for the PSP1.5 silver crystal shiny edition that'll be out in six months!

They'll likely update for the next GB which is quite soon. Sony need to fix the flaws. Nintendo could bring a dangerously good design.
