Would you be content with gaming the rest of your life with only your current library/backlog?

A backlog is exactly what it should be.

A graveyard for games that you buy but don't grab your fancy. If they were not good enough to keep you engaged when you bought them they will not be any better now.

You don't ever go back into the backlog...that would be admitting defeat.

Active backlog:
Steam: 1480
Sony: 1865
Xbox: 768
Nintendo: 1266

Content? No. I do want new experiences and despite the AAA bs, I get plenty of new games from outside that sphere. But still, I have over 1k games so I'd probably be ok.

But a game you have not played would be a new experience lol I have not touched a massive majority of my library either at all, or in any meaningful way.

Easily. I have a pretty massive collection dating all the back to the Atari 2600 and 8-bit computer days, up to the current generation of consoles and PC. More games than time. Although I've really slowed down here of late and only buy like around 5-7 new and retro games each year now. I like to finish/master games I start.

If they stopped making games today, yeah I'd be fine.

But if they continued making games I wouldn't be content to miss out on new installments in my favorite franchises or whatever other hot new ones come out.

Wouldn't be a problem at all. Between my backup of physical games, my Steam backlog, my GoG collection and the endless sea of emulation (that keeps on expanding thanks to fan-translations) I could easily game until the day I die without missing "modern" gaming.

I think considering the modern incarnation of the game library--all permanently* digitally owned†, all redownloadable at any‡ time--means I am likely pretty close to being able to achieve this. I have lots of games across all generations on my PS5. On top of this I just wrapped up 260 hours in Death Stranding 2. This already has me itching to replay MGSV, which I already have 380+ hours in. I could probably finish out the year between just these two games.

If I get bored of that, there's no shortage of bigly games in my collection to revisit--Baldur's Gate 3, I'm looking at you--in addition to games I've never beaten, or running through Symphony of the Night for the 50th time.

Now I wouldn't want this to happen. But I think now more than ever I could theoretically live with it.

I have enough games and backlog to live out the rest of my days and still probably not get to play everything or see it all. If I won the lottery, didn't have to worry about working, keeping my body fit and slaving away for the woman, then I'd probably be able to dedicate more than a few hours a day to the hobby and catch up on some stuff.

What if it's only StarCraft 64!

I think I would be content with only playing what I own already, across Steam, PS, Xbox and Switch 1&2.

My backlog is easily 100+ across all platforms. Damn you Steam sales! And I tend to only buy the good ones that I know I'll replay.

Just curious how others feel.
Sure, most genres have been kind of "solved" already, you probably own the perfect representations of all genres a few times over by now, I still go wild like a rabid pig on cocaine when there's deep Steam sales on, though.
