Would you want to be an average pro athlete?

I saw a piece on that pitcher who got traded to NY Monday. They were talking about he's had almost all the cartiledge in his knees removed. That got me thinking of all the injuries athletes have to live with. Would you put up with it?

I don't mean a superstar. I mean something like make 100-200g a year. If it meant living in pain and maybe needing a cane/crutches before 40 for million dollars in your retirement fund?

I'd only play a sport like basketball. And I would big-man 3-point specialist.

I'd like to be a baseball player.

Football players die young for obvious reasons. Their life after football kinda sucks, save for WRs and CBs (and a bunch of 'em get baned up good too!).

Hockey players have no teeth, so no thanks.

Basketball players end up with horrible knees.

Baseball is a good sport if you don't use steroids.

uh...that's VERY below average for a professional athlete. the league minimum in the NFL is 550k a year...

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. League minimum in the NBA is around $385K, and for MLB it's $316K-- and this is if you're a scrub. :D

Hell yes, I'd take it lol. You're most likely going to have arthritis when you get older anyway. :D Besides, you see former players in their 50's and 60's all the time walking without pain-- it's all in how you listen to your body; sure, health problems can and do happen, but not in every instance, and usually only when one pushes their body too far.

Football (and boxing) is the notable exception, as a far greater proportion of those guys get SERIOUSLY messed up later on in life.

even though Im not left handed, id like to be a left handed reliever in baseball, once you are average you get better contracts then your right handed teammates because you are likely that clubs left handed specialist. Also, you dont pitch much. You are a situational pitcher, usually facing one or two batters per outings. Also, they stick around longer in their careers because lefties are in short supply. So even as a sub average lefty reliever, you will still get a job and decent money in your late years

If it meant living in pain and shit? Fuck no.

If it meant being whole of body, getting payed the league minimum, and having a reputation like Tyron Lue? Then yes.

Beinng an average race car driver would rule...as long as the team and sponsors don't expect me to be anything more, it would be a great life.

Race car drivers aren't athletes, though. ;)

Though I'm sure that 9 out of 10 rednecks (and feisty Canadians :p) disagree. :D

Anyone who thinks high level race car drivers aren't athletes are fucking morons. And that driving to work example was ridiculous BTW. OMG I PLAYED PICK UP BALL OUTSIDE TODAY, I'M AN ATHLETE!!!11...it's all relative.

Sustaining two to three G turns is standard for two to three hours races in F1, sports car racing and other disciplines. That sort of weight would give most normal people whiplash after ten minutes.

Hah, simmer down, Shin-meister-- I was only half-serious (or maybe a third-serious). :D Just wanted to get your goat-- seems to have worked. ;) :p

If you're alluding to me with those "I played pick-up ball" comments, well, I never claimed to be a professional athlete either (which is what this topic was about). :lol

Race car drivers: owners of exceptionally strong necks. ;) :D

Hah, I was just teasing; I was trying to make the point that it's more about doing what you're truly interested in-- sorta trying to remind you of that fact (which I know you're aware of) and keeping you true to yourself. :D :)

DON'T FORGET YOUR ROOTS! :D

Well, you'd be making good money ... and if you're a pro, at least you're fucking good at it.

The next big question is, what sport would you want to be a superstar at? I've always said soccer, because then I could pull off some crazy ass shit on the field.

actually, i didn't really read his post. i was just trying piss off shinobi some more =p

:lol Seems that's become a theme this week...

I just thought of the ultimate average position in sports...the third string quarterback. $200,000 a year to do nothing but hold a clipboard and get an up close view of the cheerleaders. Doesn't get much better then that.

Yeah there was an article over the summer about a guy(EX Met, Card, Cub pitcher Mark Clark) from a tiny town of about 600 people about 10 miles away from here. He played pro ball for 8 or 9 years saved his money well and all he does is hunt and fish(many times with Jim Thome), drink beer, and ride around in his Hummer. He's pretty much set for the rest of his life.

Uh, i'll gladly take the NBA mid level exception (average salary among all players) at $5 million a year, thank you very much. While you're at it, make it over 6 years (with 15% increase each year) guaranteed.

I think Chris Mullin and the Warriors migh just offer me that, actually.

I'd want to play pro dodgeball. Wouldn't be good at anything else. :/ Edit: nevermind. I'm imagining what I'd have to wear.
