I'm glad Grandpa porked a Chinese Muslim
I saw this news story posted on another forum, and it seems to be posted on BBC news, so it's not immediately a crock. However, looking at the guy in the picture reminds me quite a bit of Rael.

Aubrey de Grey: "The first person to live to 1,000 might be 60 already"
Life expectancy is increasing in the developed world. But Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey believes it will soon extend dramatically to 1,000. Here, he explains why.

I'm not sure whether we're supposed to post full news articles, but there's the first paragraph. Personally, 1000 years seems a bit too long, unless we ever got rid of this crappy system of working to live. On the other hand, if I won a few dozen million dollars in the lottery, it might not be so bad...

1000 years? Pffft-- the Sumerian kings used to live to 20K+ years of age. ;) To this geneticist I say: come correct, or don't come at all! :D

Yes. Just as long as my body/mind didn't deteriorate to the point where I'd be unhappy.

The most obvious answer, I guess.

Now that I see the picture without all that text surrounding it, this guy instead makes me think of Seth Green, and more specifically, an older Scott Evil. Anyone else agree?

I figure God has the apocalypse, etc. all lined up to happen right after we figure out how to dramatically extend our lifespans. Y'know, just to be funny.

He must have read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy recently.

---edit---
and yes, I would need to live 1000+ years if I was to ever achieve my dream of breaking Wilt Chamberlain's record, his sex record.

Maybe I can get laid by then?

Ooh, hadn't even thought of that angle.

demon's well on his way to scoring some forbidden poon though, methinks.

Like I noted in my first post, it sucks enough to have a dead-end job for just a few years or decades, but just imagine if you were stuck in one for a thousand years!

The global overpopulation issues that would come up if everyone had the option of living to age 1000 are mind-boggling.

If this ever came to fruition, I'd forsee a death lottery for everyone over 100. Or how about periodic controlled releases of terminal diseases? Sounds fun, I can't wait.

That's why we would use babies for sustenance, ensuring that the noble cow never goes extinct.

i'd completely re-invent myself every 100 years. Cut all ties with people I know and live out an entirely new existence for 100 years.

Even if they could counteract the genetic decomposition (or whatever), i would think that figure is far higher than the reality of it.

you have a risk of dying in the next year of well under one in 1,000, which means that if you stayed that way forever you would have a 50/50 chance of living to over 1,000.

There're plenty of ailments that gradually add up, with respect to how they effect the body... that aren't related to old age. Dying of those when you're young is highly improbable (see: lung cancer from smoking). If you were to keep it up for 120 years, even without deteriorating health from old age, it's highly probable that you'll develop some form of cancer.

I'm pretty sure that's one of the defects that they're working on averting or else the plan would never fly..

But a youthful body is more able to counteract the toxins in the body that cause the mutations of the cells in the first place.

Back on topic, 1000 years I think would be the perfect length of time to live if you asked for it from a wish (i.e. it was limited to only you or only very few select individuals). On a global scale, it'd be fucking insane.
