Would Zelda:TP (or any Zelda) on 2 Disks... Work?

Weekly stupid question time!

So I've been wondering - every new-age Zelda game I've (we've) played was on 1 disk that includes WW, MM, OoT and 4SA. We also can point at least two different GCN games that launched on 2 disks:

Resident Evil 4: This is a perfect example of how you do a game spanning 2 disks. Second disk brings NEW locations, NEW monsters, NEW everything.

+ NEW stuff, FRESH stuff
- can't go back to previous locations

Baten Kaitos: This is a perfect example of how you do NOT a multidisk game. Disk 2 brings SAME locations, SAME monsters, SAME everything (excluding final dungeon) as on Disk 1. (Sidenote: way to fucking ruin this game Namco).

+ can go back to previous locations
- NO new stuff

.....................................................................

So how would a multidisk Zelda work? (If even!)

Have the same world on two disks? Of course there would occur a major change (back to the past, winter, cataclysms etc.) in mid-game.

Or have a two times bigger world on two disks? Of course you wouldn't be able to go back to any location from Disk 1.

Personally I'd vote for 2 times bigger world (RE4-style!). New stuff is new stuff after all. New dungeons, new cities, new overworld.

FTW!

I would like to travel through one single continous world, and not be limited to having to change discs to go back to a previous one or something.

With all the fetching you would have to do and all the running around and uncovering things, don't see how you could make two seperate worlds on two discs. Each disk would have to have the same locations.

Yeah, considering the continous nature of Zelda worlds, I don't see how it could span two disks without making some serious design compromises. Zelda games employ the Metroid style of "See this? You get to do something with this later. See you then."

The only thing I can really think of would be a Light World/Dark World scenario, but again, the Zelda games always use those kinds of dynamics for puzzles spanning both worlds.

I suppose with Zelda you could have the same world on both discs but have dungeons that are only accessible after a certain part of the game. Early dungeons and content on one disc, later dungeons and content on a second disc. Either that or light world changes to dark world and there's no changing back, but that looks to be impractical with TP. When it comes down to it, I just don't think Nintendo needs 2 discs.

Hmm, Intresting question, and I in a way would like either way of doing it, of corse idealy it'll be 1 disk (which I think it will be anyway) but hypethoticly speaking. I would like the idea of 2 disks because that could mean a larger, and onger game. But I could only see 1 plausable way for them to do it, because as has been mentioned, this isnt RE4, you do go all over the place in Zelda, hell in OoT sometimes I would go back to the various towns and such just because they were a retreat from the large tasks placed ahead of you, literaly going there to relax (god I love OoT).

Anyway, I think 1 viabale way of doing it would be to make it so the entire overworld is on 1 disk, but I mean huge, with tons of areas, pack the whole disk with that kinda thing, than make tons of dunguns, and make them all on the other disk. Now obviously this would be a pain in the ass, and honestly there would be no way to get around that with 2 disks in a Zelda game, but if it ammounted to there bing a really long game experience wuit a huge overworld and tones of dungions i could live with the inconvienance.

Either that or Nintendo releases like a gig of upgrade RAM wiuth every copy, that stors the entire overworld upon start up of the game than asks for the second disk for everything else. :lol

Not being able to go back wouldn't work if there are heart pieces or other collectables found in dungeons. So if you miss something, you can't get it later on.

Damn did that piss me off. Anyways I don't see why Zelda would even need 2 discs, it has no FMVs and pratically zero voice overs. And not all of the music is going to orchastrated, only some of it is.

Would it be annoying? Somewhat.

Would it stop me from playing it? No.

Would Nintendo EVER put Zelda on 2 discs? Hell naw.

Thankfully, the Rev will use full size DVD's, and 4.3 gigs is more than enough for a non-HD game, and you could always dual layer the disc.

I can't seriously comprehend how this game can be on a single disc(if they have announced so). It has orchesteral music and supposedly the singleplayer should take 70-80 hours to complete. I sense a overdose of backtracking.

It must be so exciting, coming to TP having never played a Zelda game before. Sometimes I wish I erase my memory so that each new Zelda is a completely fresh experience.

Anyway, 2 discs just wouldn't work. I wonder why RE4 had to go to two discs. As far as I'm aware what tends to fill out disc space with current games is not the actual game data but pre-rendered FMVs and VA, of which RE4 GC supposedly has none of the former and a fair but not hugely excessive amount of the latter. Has anyone ever ripped the files from it to see how much space all the info needs. It's not like Capcom haven't done multidisc games before without needing to. If FFX with all it's FMVs and hours of VA can fit on one DVD there is no way in hell DMC2 needed two DVDs.

In the first part of all Zelda games the world is not completely accessible, so they could store a part of the world and something like 2/3 of all dungeons on the first disc. Then after some event there could be a event after which a disc change happens and the old dungeons become inaccessible. Second disc would then store the whole world and the remaining dungeons.

With orchestred music and a world that is supposedly much much bigger than OoT, I fail to see how this is not going to be on two discs.

old dungeons become inaccessible

That will never happen with a zelda game.

Wind Waker had a world much much bigger than OOT, sure it didn't have orchestrated music, but only some of TP's music will be orchestrated. I'm sure as big as TP's world will be, its not going to be as big as TWW's is. It may have more stuff to do, but just because a game is huge does not mean its going to take up 2 discs. The only GC games that take 2 discs are 3rd party games that have quite a bit of voice work, FMV cutscenes, or a lot of real-time cutscenes.

If the game is really too big, maybe they'll use those nifty compression techniques Factor 5 used to fit all their content onto one disc for Rebel Strike. The audio might not be the be digital clear, but you get the comfort of getting off your ass just once :).

[edit]I'll bet the only things orchestrated are the intro, overworld theme, and the end theme. That would still be awesome. Synth stuff is still good enough for me. Like in WW, the music may adapt to your combos, and that would be hard to do with orchestrated music.

Yep, that's the point.

You win something - bigger world, you lose something - backtracking for hearts, and side-quests stuff.
