Wow! AKIRA really sucks.

I watched this so-called 'anime' a second time yesterday. In comparison to Vampire Hunter D and Dragon Ball Z, it's pretty craptacular. The storyline is also needlessly confusing and could have been presented in a better manner.

Anyone else feel this way?

yep

Thought the animation was amazing though. The only reason i continued watching.

Now, watch Animie purist run here and say you are crazy. I reckon it was average, along with Evangelion. I fucking hate it when Animies go crazy. There's been so many that try to fuck with your head.

Edit: Awesome avatar

That thing scared the fuck outta me when i was a kid. "The Nothing"

I think you are completely and totally something other than alright. I have no idea how you can seriously mention Dragonball Z and Akira in the same line of text, let alone the same breath. The storyline isn't needlessly confusing, you just have to pay attention and connect the dots.

I enjoyed it, although it was a little too violent for me. The story was good enough and it gets better upon multiple viewings.

For folks like Vieo, it's not "anime" unless there's spiky hair, huge pupils, and plot made for 5 year olds.

He also loves Pokemon on Fox kids (Gotta catch 'em all!) :D

If I finish watching a movie then shout out "WTF was that?!" and promptly log on to the internets to find a FAQ on said movie just so I can find out what in the blue hell I just finished watching, something is wrong with the movie.

My definition of anime is Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D, and Sailor Moon. =P

EDIT: While we're on the subject of things Japanese related, did anyone see Lost in Translation? Remember that scene where they were being chased and that guy was shooting at them with that weird laser thing? What was that weird laser thing and how come I've never seen them?

BS. Of the complete and total variety. There's a FAQ because, yeah, it's a movie with multiple layers. But That in no way suggests that something is inherently wrong with the film. You can find Vampire Hunter D faqs if you look fo them.

Pretty sure that was just a BB gun with a nifty laser beam coming out the barrel for a nice little wow effect. I'd like to get my hands on one.

Akira kicked ass BTW :)

well I can see why you wouldn't like Akira you need an attention span to watch it...unlike DBZ

Akira was good for its time. It's important, and pretty enjoyable, though I can rarely watch it anymore. My feelings for it are along the same lines as my feelings for Evangelion, though I think that Eva is far more overhyped and overrated.

Someone should mention that the original dub of Akira is much more enjoyable than the newer version.

lol you know the strange thing about Evangelion is my friend and I thought it was a great series way back when it was in fan subs only. We watched a crappy version of the movie and thought it was great. When the movie came out on DVD we watched it......not the same effect. pretty much at the same time said "WTF was that?" Neither one of us can rember it being that...eh

"Tetsuo you pea brain!"

lol

oh and I agreee withthe comment about the comic being better then the movie.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
i will return to this argument later, once i have master the 4th form of my secondary power...

at this point in time, i'm only using the 3rd form of my fourth choice martial art, and look how i managed to not lose.

But , HA! , other posters reveal that they are only using half of their soul energy that contributes to their 5th form of the second power that they haven't used in 20 years!

WHO WINS!?
More importantly , WHO CARES?

* I F*CKING HATE animes like this.

Akira , on the other hand, is great.

Dead

well not really...yet
I found the limited edition Tin DVD of Akira for $16 at a DVD store :D

And Eva is as enjoyable as ever to me, and as incredible as end of eva is, obviously itll never have the impact it had on me as it did the first time I viewed it....

Are you serious?

Did you need a guide for Star Wars? Because, shit, it gets complicated.

Akira is one of the greatest animated films of all time; the fact that you can't understand it doesn't mean that it sucks.

Aww, c'mon! Vampire Hunter D's story is pretty straight-forward. You might want to look at a FAQ in hopes of getting answers to questions like "Where did D get his sword?", but other than stuff like that the story pretty much flows without you having to melt your brain.

With AKIRA, they do stuff like that they shouldn't. For example, at the beginning of the movie they show this huge-ass explosion like Goku throwing a kamewave while in Super Saijin form 3. They show that clip for like 5 seconds. The movie is like, what, nearly 3 hours long? Around the end when Tetsuo's power goes out of his control and a big ass explosion happens, you mean to tell me that I should be able to understand that the cause of the explosion in the beginning of the movie that destroyed Tokyo wasn't caused by a bomb but some bozo losing control of his phychic powers? They only showed that at the very beginning of the movie. Who's gonna remember that 2 hours into the things? Then at the end of the movie, they close out with something like... "I am Tetsuo". WTF is that supposed to mean?!@

He's D, he's a half-vampire, and he kills other vampires. It's pretty simple and they let you know early in the movie. With AKIRA, there's all sorts of shyt going on. Shyt blowing up, people using drugs and shyt, gangs running a muck and shyt, government coverups, secret agents, etc and shyt. It's freaking MGS2 all over again!

And what is there to not understand about FLCL?

I didn't understand FLCL either, but I think it's supposed to be that way on purpose. :D

The ONLY two things that I've ever watched at LOT of but never understood, but still liked are as follows:

1. Aeon Flux - I never knew why she was running around shooting stuff up.
2. The Maxx - Was the guy insane or was he really a super hero? =P

EDIT:

I've seen an opera before when I was younger. I didn't understand it, but I knew it was something really great. I don't have to understand AKIRA to know it's a steaming pile of crap that tries to keep you shocked with it's visuals (HERO starring Jet Li anyone?) to make up for it's lack good storytelling.

Akira is not the best Anime but it is the most important.

I found it enjoyable. Alot more than Ghost in the Shell atleast.

Edit: Aeon Flux is a shitty shitty show.

I thought the animation was amazing but the pacing and the editing and everything they cut out from the manga and the way the story was handled was just horrible

It took me about 3 - 4 watchings before i could sit through the whole thing with out falling asleep

Seriously. I turned on so many people to anime when I let my highschool art class watch Akira back in 93 or thereabouts. It's done so much to get the word out.

DBZ can be summed up in one sentence: "He is so much stronger than the last time I saw him!"

Akira : Anime = Star Trek : Sci-Fi

I agree that Akira is a terrible movie with awesome art and animation. But not for the reasons Vieo stated. :p

Akira is just a huge story that was overcompressed into a feature film. It cramps too much shit into too little time and you don't really care about many of the thing happening. That's about it though. And yeah it looks like he just owned himself by sounding dumb again. He tried to zing Akira and got put in a chokehold! :lol

I've been saying this for a while now. It's total GARBAGE and I think folks just like it cos it's the first anime they saw :p

Also see: Ghost In the Shell. That movie made no fucking sense (especially since it was based on 1/6th of the full story from the manga)

Akira looks great, but is a horrible movie. I hate Akira apologists who are like, "READ THE GRAPHIC NOVELS AND MANGA AND FAQ AND YOU GET IT DUH WHAT ARE YOU STUPID?!!"

Doc Holliday

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
Can we ban this guy forever? Dumbest post ever! If you can't see the genius that is AKIRA then I truly feel sorry for you. Vampire Hunter D!?!? Dragon Ball Z...this has got to be a joke post.

Ok, maybe if I read the comics(manga for you purists), that would explain a lot of things that I didn't understand. If that's the case, they should have made it a series or several movies instead of compressing things.
By compressing things, it only ends up like those sucky ass Lord of the Rings movies. No Oldman Willow? No Tom Bombadil? I mean, WTF man!?
