I have no idea how you can seriously mention Dragonball Z and Akira in the same line of text, let alone the same breath. The storyline isn't needlessly confusing, you just have to pay attention and connect the dots.

For folks like Vieo, it's not "anime" unless there's spiky hair, huge pupils, and plot made for 5 year olds.
Vieo said:If I finish watching a movie then shout out "WTF was that?!" and promptly log on to the internets to find a FAQ on said movie just so I can find out what in the blue hell I just finished watching, something is wrong with the movie.
Vieo said:EDIT: While we're on the subject of things Japanese related, did anyone see Lost in Translation? Remember that scene where they were being chased and that guy was shooting at them with that weird laser thing? What was that weird laser thing and how come I've never seen them?
Vieo said:I watched this so-called 'anime' a second time yesterday. In comparison to Vampire Hunter D and Dragon Ball Z, it's pretty craptacular. The storyline is also needlessly confusing and could have been presented in a better manner.
Anyone else feel this way?
Lambtron said:Akira was good for its time. It's important, and pretty enjoyable, though I can rarely watch it anymore. My feelings for it are along the same lines as my feelings for Evangelion, though I think that Eva is far more overhyped and overrated.
Someone should mention that the original dub of Akira is much more enjoyable than the newer version.
Vieo said:My definition of anime is Sailor Moon. =P
Uh Sailor Moon rocks. I've even met a Repub who likes it.Jim Bowie said:Are you serious?
BS. Of the complete and total variety. There's a FAQ because, yeah, it's a movie with multiple layers. But That in no way suggests that something is inherently wrong with the film. You can find Vampire Hunter D faqs if you look fo them.
And what is there to not understand about FLCL?
Are you serious?
Did you need a guide for Star Wars? Because, shit, it gets complicated.
Akira is one of the greatest animated films of all time; the fact that you can't understand it doesn't mean that it sucks.

Vieo said:With AKIRA, they do stuff like that they shouldn't. For example, at the beginning of the movie they show this huge-ass explosion like Goku throwing a kamewave while in Super Saijin form 3. They show that clip for like 5 seconds. The movie is like, what, nearly 3 hours long? Around the end when Tetsuo's power goes out of his control and a big ass explosion happens, you mean to tell me that I should be able to understand that the cause of the explosion in the beginning of the movie that destroyed Tokyo wasn't caused by a bomb but some bozo losing control of his phychic powers? They only showed that at the very beginning of the movie. Who's gonna remember that 2 hours into the things? Then at the end of the movie, they close out with something like... "I am Tetsuo". WTF is that supposed to mean?!@

Wait for the wind called Akira!

karasu said:goddamn. You just owned yourself.
I agree that Akira is a terrible movie with awesome art and animation. But not for the reasons Vieo stated.
Akira is just a huge story that was overcompressed into a feature film. It cramps too much shit into too little time and you don't really care about many of the thing happening. That's about it though. And yeah it looks like he just owned himself by sounding dumb again. He tried to zing Akira and got put in a chokehold!
