Couple's online gaming causes infant's death

Korean press picks up tale of tragedy when couple plays World of Warcraft to excess, infant perishes from neglect.
In a story out of Korea which is just now surfacing in the Western press, a couple in Incheon, South Korea, were arrested last week when their four-month-old daughter died after being left alone by the couple for hours. The mother and father reportedly had gone to a nearby Internet cafe, lost themselves in playing Blizzard's massively multiplayer online PC game World of Warcraft, and returned to their home only to find the infant dead from suffocation. "We booked the pair on criminal charges, judging that when you consider the situation, they were responsible for their daughter's death," a policeman told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper. The couple reportedly told police, "We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day." The infant was the couple's only child.

Met playing StarCraft, married in the world of Vana'diel, and killed a baby and a thousand dragons in World of Warcraft.

This news is really sad. :(

There's always extremes. Sad really.

Edit: Why am I not suprised this happened in Korea? Some Koreans shouldn't own PC's... fucking obessive nutcases.

that's MMOs by design.....addicting. I think there should be ways outside of just simply playing the game on PC that still allows users to get their daily fix. Maybe letting people participate in auctions on their cell phones? It's obviously going to up the addiction factor but at least you can still "be" with others while you are sort of playing the game.

Just what I need, some nut on the freeway wondering if he won his Krol Blade.

That is sad. I never really got into MMO games that much. Actually the only game I have played recently that had me HOOKED was Sims 2. I would spend like 5 or 6 hours at a time playing it. After I move into my condo from the rest of my friends, I probably will get sucked back in.

I think MMO's should enhance their community focus. You've got a mix of individuals with different skills and levels of commitment but they call can benefit from each other's contributions.

I think casual players can act as support systems for the hardcore that bring back spoils for the entire community. Depending on your mood you can switch between roles. The point is, casual MMO players always feel left behind, that they aren't going to experience everything the game offers unless they put in the time. But if the design of the game is focused on the community aspect of the game instead of the grind then maybe people who specialize in crafting or other non-combat or time intesive mechanics will still be considered important and beneficial.

Those crazy Koreans.

Wasn't it Korea where a guy recently stabbed his best friend to death for selling his flaming bastard sword of doom +3vs. undead ?

Happened with Everquest too. Some parent locked their kid in a room or something because he was annoying while the parent played the game, he later died.

My god some people really have mental problems.

1- Addiction is a lack of control - their fault*
2- You not letting a 4 months old alone at your place

*nobody is perfect blablabla it's easy with MMOs, etc, blablablabla all that shit ok?

funny. Nice stereotypical judgement. what is more interesting is how THEY DIDN'T own a PC.

odd huh?

maybe they should have...then they could have checked on the baby while hearing it cry.

I skimmed the article and missed the part about the Internet Cafe. But tell me, stereotype or not, how often do you hear shit like that happening in the US or Europe? It's 99% of the time in Asia.

I dont know, I hear about things like a Sniper randomly killing innocent people with his Son, White teenage kids who kill students at a highschool.......Jeffrey domer......Woman puts baby in microwave and claims to forget....baby dies.......etc in america.

Crazy people are all over the world.

While I don't think these particular people are "crazy" or whatever....I do think they are stupid for leaving thier 4 month old baby Alone. that is just retarded.

I can understand getting caught up in WoW. The goal of that game is to make you addicted and keep you addicted. But Leaving ur baby alone at home is just retarded.

peace
