WoW vs. FFXI

why do people try to play the grouping card when it comes to reasons to pick ffxi over WoW? its not like the game actively discourages people from grouping, they just don't force you to. I rarely play WoW on my own as I find its much more fun to quest with a group of my friends. Plus on a PvP server it helps to have your buddies with you in case you encounter a group of the opposite faction looking for trouble. Also, instances DO require you to group with people, in the case of high end instances, group with LOTS of people. See the difference between WoW and other MMORPGs is that WoW gives you choices. I love grouping but if I want to quest on my own, I like having the ability to do so. Case in point. On certain days I have class late. Sometimes my friends will get on and do some quests without me. No sweat, I can just login when I have some free time and catch up on my own, and then the next time we get a chance we can all play together and do the same stuff. The idea that grouping should be forced in order to encourage cooperation between people in an mmo environment is ridiculous. if someone is paying a monthly fee to play your game, let them play it their way. The appeal to grouping should be as stated above, being able to accomplish goals as a team and interacting with other people. :shrug: I guess some people suck at meeting new people and like having the crutch of a forced gameplay mechanic to guide them.

The idea that my enjoyment would have to depend on the availability of others irritates me and thus I did not continue in FFXI after I realized what I had to look forward to. To me, grinding is NOT fun at all, no matter how many people you are with.

:lol As being on the winning side of several 6/7/8-10 WSG matches and 11/12-15 AB matches I can truly attest that this is ridiculously inaccurate.

Ding ding ding. If I just want to kill an hour or so before I do anything I can just solo with no commitments to any party members and still progress.

It is easier to level in WoW but the "grind" post 60 is just as bad.

And you are every bit as dependent on grouping in WoW... In fact, you are more often stuck being dependent on /multiple/ groups in WoW than you are in FFXI.

Both games have several fatal flaws, as do all MMOs (either present at the start or added later, or some that are just latent, as in the case of WoW which is fun to 60 [a short time period] and then a total borefest [infinity]).

Oh, and PvP in WoW is a complete joke.
 
I dont know what guild your in that has 10-12 people online at any given time willing to go out and pvp. Its such a pain in the ass to get a group of people together who know what they are doing that its not even worth it.
 
You know everyone likes to bash the pvp in WoW and granted its nowhere even close to being perfect, but to me it still seems better implemented than a lot of other mmorpgs. I'll admit that I haven't played that many other mmos so my knowledge is limited to what I read on various websites. Correct me if im wrong but isn't the pvp in ffxi centered entirely around a minigame? Ballista or whatever its called. I love how in WoW you can just roll up on some chumps on the other faction and just start beating each other senseless. Hell, the first time I ever ventured into a contested area we got jumped by a 50 rogue who raped our asses. Sure it was annoying but it was funny nonetheless since it completely caught us off guard.

I look at the pvp in WoW as sort of a rite of passage. Sure when you're just a lowbie entering a contested area for the first time you're gonna get raped, but once you're higher it will be your turn to dish out the pain. (assuming you know how to play your class, and you're not fighting a shaman :D ). Of course if that bothers you, you can always play on a PvE server (once again going back to WoW offering you choices on how to play). As far as AV and WSG are concerned, yes there are issues, but at least its available. I didn't buy WoW with the expectation of those zones being available. To me they were just like a bonus. Something to do once you're closer to the endgame. That being said I hope they continue to refine the pvp system, maybe give some more incentive to world pvp. I think someone else mentioned how battlegrounds has caused the elimination of town raids, which I always found fun, even when on the losing side. Its funny when I have to call my buddy and be like "hey we gotta go quest somewhere else for awhile since there are 50 horde chilling in menethil".

I would love to see them implement a territory control system, kinda like the FFXI one, but centered around PvP. Like if horde kills X amount of alliance and also several key townspeople then they gain control of the zone, and get a discount on vendor items and whatnot. Sure there are issues regarding interference with quests and whatnot but I'm sure that can be worked out. Hell, maybe they can make dynamic quest content that has an affect on zone control. Like fetching an item in a tough as nails instance to bring back to the town that will instantly return control to your faction.

My guild is me and MAF and a few other people and none of us ever play that much. I've rarely lost a BG match over the course of the past ~2-ish months in the 40-49 and 50-59 brackets. At most 10 out of several, several dozen. Every time it's just a pick up group. However, because I'm on a fairly misproportioned server (I'm horde and we're vastly outnumbered) I do see a lot of the same people in every match.
 
I loved FFXI until I started trying to just play casually. It just didn't work.

WoW I love because I can play it hardcore, or I can just dick around and actually accomplish something!

I never understood the comment that FFXI had a hard grind...

While I can't comment on WoW, FFXI was far easier to level in than either EQ or EQ2.
I got to 52-53 in 2 months.

You just can't suck and have to be a total ass when it comes to group makeups.
 
Grinding is actually easy and relatively in FFXI, if you have a good group. It's just really tiring. Takes me about 8-10 hours of leveling in a good group for the few levels before the cap.
 
Its hard to get into FFXI if you dont know or simply dont care about the FF universe or FF lore. WoW is very easy to get into and fun from the start even if you never played or heard of a warcraft game in your life.
 
See I like final fantasy games but FFXI was a letdown , another gripe towards squareenix and their product is that it forces you to go through playonline which is just a big pain in the ass mostly. If I wanted to play WOW right now , I'd merely go resubscribe to it , click the tab on my desktop. Let it patch since I haven't played it in 3 months and sign in. Pick my server, pick my character and bam done.

FFXI , sign into playonline, playonline updates for 20 minutes, sign into playonline again, patch then installs for 10 minutes, sign into playonline a 3rd time and select FFXI, FFXI needs patching, wait 30 minutes, sign into playonline again, load up FFXI. I may prefer WOW but honestly no MMORPG out there plays like I'd want one to- I desire a realtime combat based game, something that has combat set up like wind waker or kingdom hearts but it still has levels and stats I cant' be the only one who thinks this would be neat ? I hated phantasy star online though, it did something similar to what I have in my head but it was really slowly paced and felt more like diablo then anything else.

Wait, so if there are both POL & FFXI updates, PC players have to boot up POL four times? That's retarded.

On PS2, it pretty much goes like this: Select "PlayOnline Viewer" from the browser, it automatically logs me in and updates itself and all that. If there does happen to be an update, I will need to reboot POL once after it finishes, and then I'm good to go. Then, obviously, just click on "Games" -> "Final Fantasy XI." If there happens to be a FFXI patch, it will download, unzip, and install the updates without me having to leave or reboot POL. Once it's done, it forwards right to the title screen where I can begin playing.

Much less cumbersome, it seems.

I think there's also a way to boot right to Final Fantasy XI in both versions, though. On PS2, I believe you simply need the game disc in the system when you boot up POL, and it'll give you the option to bypass POL (assuming there's no updates, I guess?); no PC, I believe there's a desktop icon that can serve the same function, no disc required. I've never tried using either one, though, so maybe I'm misinterpreting something here...
 
You only need to boot up POL/FFXI twice. You do it initially to started the POL update and then you need to boot again after the POL udpate is installed. FFXI updates don't need to reboot POL as I recall.
 
ffxi sucked, can't believe alex sold half of gaf on that.


got that game at launch was promptly uninstalled in less than a week, and physically thrown out.
