WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

So this bigger casing would allow for a bigger battery right?

What's the 4s battery like now? 5 will be my first iPhone, and my Droid X gets about a day and a half of normal (not a ton of browsing/media) use with a charge.

Basically, I charge my phone every night anyways. Can you with 4/4s' make it through the day?

I have zero problems with the 4S battery. I'm a moderate to heavy user and usually have 1/3 - 1/2 my battery left at the end of the day.

When I still had my 4S, I would end each day with 20-30% battery pretty consistently with what I would consider to be moderate usage. It wasn't anything to write home about, but it wasn't terrible.

The iPhone is taller which is to be expected, but it's only 7mm taller with a an almost 20mm taller screen (simple maths), so there is a massive improvement in that regard. It's nothing like what you're saying, sorry.
?_? What am I saying exactly? Think you're misunderstanding, I was quoting someone who said it looks halfway between that mockup and the current one. What I said was that the front chins are not anywhere near that trimmed down. Which they aren't. Practically the same 18mm chin. Maybe 15-17 instead? But not like that mockup that assumed the physical length was the same.

I doubt it. It's only slightly taller, while getting a bit thinner, and having to light up even more pixels. On top of that, A6 or whatever new internals (better camera/flash etc) they pack in there.

Who knows though, maybe Apple found out some magical way to increase the battery life. If they did, though, I doubt it'll be by much at all or anything worth reporting on.

I've run some numbers. If the screen is to be 1136px tall (which gives me a 3,95" diagonal), keeping the 640 width, it will be ~14mm taller. If the screen has a 4" diagonal, it'll have a res of something like 1152px tall, and will be ~15mm taller than the current screen.

Now, a screen 15 or 14mm taller and the overall phone dimension only increasing 7mm, it translates into 7-8mm less bezel. Almost 1cm. That's significant, come on Sentry.

Leaking like a sieve.

Yeah I was wrong there, because I hadn't realised the screen they'd mocked up still wasn't 16:9. So it will look similar length to the mockup, but with a longer screen.

That is significant, but I just don't see those being the actual numbers. I could be wrong, obviously, but it looks to me that it's only a few millimeters shorter. When I get home i'll run the numbers. :lol

Can we make out the actual lengths from the blueprint leak? I can't tell. [edit] My estimates come up to 15mm versus the current 18-19mm. Like I previously said, only a 3-4mm difference.

John Gruber always speculates that one reason why Android phones have gotten so massive is to accommodate larger batteries for power-hungry LTE. Is the same thing going on here? Increasing the screen size and fragmenting the user base seems insanely un-Apple, so the only logical conclusion I can come to is that they need an excuse to expand the device volume to accommodate a larger battery.

I guess my thought is, even if so how is this much different than resolution changes in the past? Because of the new aspect ratio? If that's the only problem, I am hoping for an elegant solution.

No, the Samsung fat phones are big in Asia, where there's little LTE presence.

No they are big because most people want bigger screens.

Ok so I've made the shift from a iPhone 3GS to a Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7.5. Overall, I think the operating system is great with some major quirks. But I cannot come to accept the form factor/design. The larger screen results in me accidentally touching the back button at the base of my palm. And reaching the opposite corner of the phone with my thumb becomes a bit tiresome after a while and I end up having to use two hands to keep device use comfortable.

Just my 3 cents.

Alright, the more I look at the details of the leaked back frame shots... there's an attention to detail in terms of coloring. I don't think both colors will use the same iPad aluminum back material.

Seems like they're going with the old iPod Nano anodized aluminum, along with somehow coloring the stainless steel/liquid metal edge trim to match the same color tone. It seems like this back plated shit will pay off if they introduce colored versions. But I really don't know how that'll be done. I mean, will they color the glass as well? Will it be default-black coupled with a color?

White+color1/2/3/4/5 & black+color1/2/3/4/5? Super unlikely. Who knows how they're going to handle this shit. Gonna be a shelf product nightmare. But here are some ideas on what they'll call it:

A) iPhone Color
B) iPhone 4
inch
C) iPhone 7
mm taller
D) iPhone 16
:9
E) The New iPhone. Bigger. Better.

John Gruber is often full of shit.

The leaks are intentional. Cook will double down on the leakers. They will be made examples of.

You read Watchmen?

Haha the best case scenario is that all of this is circumstantial and obviously plants by Apple. And I know you're being sarcastic, but the reality is that Apple has been getting much less secure about their plans since iPad 2. We'll likely know everything worth knowing about the new iPhone well before it comes out.

They're not gonna fragment shit, it's just one more screen size. It's not a big deal.

I'm a little skeptical of this taller screen idea, but I trust that Apple won't fuck things up.

But I have to wonder if it would have just been better to keep the exact same resolution, and aspect ratio, and just make the screen 3.8 or 3.9 inches?

Nah, they can't do a tiny bump and have retina take a hit. If they wanted to keep the same ratio and up the screen size, it'd need to be 4"-4.3" so that they can up the ppi at the same time. Otherwise it's a loss.

This was the easier solution than both of those, though.

No they are big because most people want bigger screens.

That's it. I cannot for the life of me fathom how anyone would not want a larger screen on the iPhone at this point. It's too small and has been for at least 2 iterations now.

My buddy is an Apple store manager and he said the number one complaint/issue his customers have with the iPhone is screen size. It's no coincidence they're finally responding.

They're not gonna fragment shit, it's just one more screen size. It's not a big deal.

And if they migrate to it longer term (presumably they wouldn't do something like this unless they think it'll stick), then it'll become the standard in 3-4 years as older devices become obsoleted.

What the hell. How is this possible. I feel like I have had borked 4S's or something. Mine barely lasts 2/3rds of the day. If you use GPS or Whatsapp, game over basically. Slurps through battery like a gas guzzling giant.

That's not typical at all.

MacRumors has said they have been hearing (even prior to the iPad annoucement) that Apple is going to just call the new iPhone the new iPhone and completely get rid of the numbering aspect ala iPad (and Mac and iPod) which is more likely than all these weird 5/6 names.

Obvious.

If they stayed with the numbers it would be the iPhone 6.

Here's my theory - what does the back of that leaked photo look like, as far as texture?

desktop_20100727.jpg

I think that the back will be a touch panel in some respects - connect it via Bluetooth to your PC and voila, your phone acts as your touchpad. not to mention the other functions it could be used for, like the PS Vita back touch panel.

Interesting. Now that I see the trackpad and review the 9to5 pics, I can see this happening.

So the iPhone will be announced this june already ? I expected a fall reveal....

There is no 'stainless steel edge trim' as far as I can see. There's no wraparound antenna-esque thing, the 'back plate' is actually the casing, it's like a unibody phone.

Look at this photo again:

The 'back plate' IS the edge trim. I didn't notice that at first and now that I think about it, it might look pretty nice. I think this is as close as they can get to a 'unibody' aluminium iPhone while respecting the laws of physics and the need to have a separate aerial with a plastic separation.

Yup, it's like a unibody design with holes for plastic strips. I think the materials and finish will make it look and feel great. It's this that sets apart the Apple iPhone from other phones, not so much the design itself.

The only way to be secretive now I guess is to purposely seed a whole bunch of fakes out there, so that even if the actual one is leaked, there's so much misinformation that people won't know which one is the real one. That would be a lot of wasted time spent on that though.

Or to be like other manufacturers and announce their device, but have release a month or so later (bad strategy).

They can be secretive about OS updates since they announce them 3-4 months before release.

On this note, does anyone think the new thinner MacBook Pros will not be launched at WWDC, since there haven't been any case leaks?

Maybe Apple just has better control with their Mac lines? I dunno. I still think they'll want to have a big hardware announcement this year and if the pros are as radically redesigned as we expect, with the hi-dpi screens, new enclosure, SSD standard etc, then it'll be worthy of a keynote reveal. maybe they'll ship a few weeks later instead of that day.

Yeah, I guess the Mac lines don't sell 10 million+ per month, so they have more control over the line.
