WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Go back two years ago. Change "Minecraft" to "Angry Birds" for evidence that kids attention spans and fads are fickle. MS is hopping aboard the Minecraft train as it nears its final destination.

You made a point but I believe that Minecraft's universe is much more rich than Angry Birds.

Wouldn't a Minecraft sequel be a huge deal? Highly updated graphics, improved gameplay, maybe even MMO elements with MP...

Sounds like the kind of game people were hoping Mm would do after laying down LBP.

People comparing Minecraft to Angry Birds have obviously never played either game.

For one Minecraft has depth, you can build ridiculous things like a digital lego set or play it as an exploration game or play it like a survival game a la Don't Starve. Angry Birds is a digital version of you shooting rubber bands at random objects in your room because you're bored out of your mind.

Horrible news. Hopefully Markus is content enough not to sell his soul to Microsoft.

$2 billion.

:(

That's still not really true, they had a lot of first party games and devs even on PS2 even before the third parties started spreading to other platforms in the PS3/360 gen, though they did double-down on investing in their owned studios when that happened.

Edit: Regarding the devs they bought, nevermind, Ami0x said it better.

Sony's first party through PS1 and early PS2 was a damned joke. They pretty much heavily relied on third party exclusives to get where they are today. The reason to own Playstation was MGS FF series, DMC and a host of other third party games. Few gave a shit what their first party was doing. Hey i enjoyed Twisted Metal as much as the next guy but they didn't have many studios putting out shit like that. Remember 989? Ugh... When it came to first party Sega and to a lesser degree Nintendo were where it was at.

Also that post was a joke? I am simultaneously relieved and disappointed...

It's incredible that Microsoft has been in this industry for more than a decade and yet still has to buy the creative talents of people outside of the company rather than design interesting ideas internally.

Ya.. but maybe the GTA guys don't want to sell their ip.

And MineCraft has a bigger audience. There are millions of little kids playing it. GTA is big, but you can't sell it to a universal audience or use it in schools. Government and government agencies have released Minecraft maps. This thing goes beyond our little gaming world.

What do people want from 'upgraded graphics'? I keep seeing people talk about production values, but I would say part of Minecraft's appeal IS its unique pixel 3D art style. They can add a few next-gen flourishes, maybe a better lighting system or something... but I'm pretty sure drastically updated the graphics is a bad idea if they want to retain Minecraft's popularity.

How would you update its graphics whilst still retaining its unique visual character?

If true, this is a brilliant business move by Mr. Persson. Minecraft just being released on the current-gen consoles is at an all-time high in value. There's no better time to sell.

I don't see why MS would want this. I guess the days of Minecraft on the PS platform are numbered?

If this is actually happening I see it more as an investement made by their mobile division.
They want big exclusive contents for their Windows/Nokia phones, this deal would make a proven mobile killer app exclusive to their mobile devices, not to mention all the profits related to merchandise and the rights to expand the universe in different directions behind gaming.
Is this deal good for Xbox?
Not really, it would take away huge investements (enough to make at least 10 AAA titles) to lock a single game which is not really the kind of title which people buy an Xbox for in first place.
So I'm not sure how people are thinking that Xbox is behind this, it would be a Microsoft thing in a broader way.
Also it's a really risky thing, these casual, mass market contents are fucking bubbles, they are destined to burst sooner or later, it happened to the Wii, to the Kinect now is happening with Angry Birds and Candy Crash. It's not a very smart thing to do in my opinion with a long term vision.

Yup, also when's the last time anyone's seen a whole isle at Toys R Us or some other toy store dedicated to GTA merchandise?

GTA is minor league compared to Minecraft.

At best I think they would keep it off Sony consoles. I can't see them leaving PC, iOS and Android from the game.

Imagine MS puts Minecraft on Steam.

Maybe your not looking at the bigger picture.

Mojang, or more importantly Minecraft wouldn't be an acquisiton for Xbox. It'd be an acquisition important for all platforms and services the company operates.

Oh, I am. My questioning is coming from our gamer perspective though.

I understand the logic and where the $2 billion investment makes sense business wise across their platforms and ability to license a popular IP. The agreement to fund the studio is probably just icing on the cake to sell (who wouldn't want an agreed upon deep pocket to do whatever you want, if that's the case).

But, I still just don't like this regressive way of narrowing the field of play both in terms of competition or creative works. Personally I'd much rather companies throw everything they have at us consumers to tickle our fancy and buy their stuff, rather than buying out or blocking competition and choice.

One way we win, the other way we really don't, unless were rooting for corporations and not good, fun games and solid systems that offer us value.

if handled right, minecraft's imagination fueled gameplay can stay relevant for a long time to people of all ages.

it'll just be interesting to see how MS runs them, whether Mojang can ever make something else, or if Minecraft is run into the ground.

$2 Billion is a lot of money. How many AAA studios/companies could MS buy with that? 15 Atlus. 2 Capcoms. 1 Square Enix. 1 Take-Two. 1 Ubisoft.

Maybe MS should unload those checks elsewhere.

There is never a reason simpler than "that's a shitload of money."

Additionally, Notch is a known quantity now. He can take that money, start a new studio, and now he'll still be making unique games AND he has 2 billion dollars. Who wouldn't take that deal? Well, of course there would be some who wouldn't. But there's no greater motivation then hearing you can become a friggin' billionaire. Not sure there needs to be a bigger reason :P

Minecraft is that rare kinda game that a developer can retire on. Notch/Mojang will never have to make another game if they want. It's a guaranteed source of income (millions). In the long-run, it would make far more sense to keep the IP and just outsource it (game ports, merchandising, tv shows/movies, etc).

If Mojang is to sell, they I'm guessing they think Minecraft is a fad (it's not).

Why do you think buying Minecraft is a bad idea?.

Rovio is Angry Birds, not Flappy Birds. Angry Birds has the same massive young kids fanbase, cartoons, movies, crossover potential, etc.

I think it is a bad idea because banking two million dollar investment on a hot commodity for kids is a bad idea in itself. Minecraft is hot now, but will kids who like it now stick with it for years to come? Will it be a hot commodity to new gamers in two or three years?

Possibly.

Its a gamble and would be less of one if Mojang was a seasoned developer with multiple assets. They're not and MS is obviously just buying the IP.

What would MS get out of this? Minecraft is already on everything you could put it on so exclusivity is out.

AFAIK they arent really making anything big right now and even if they were, there is a risk it could turn out bad.

So the only safe bet is......Minecraft 2? What would a sequel like that even add?

Yep. When there's potential news like this, parodying a post without letting it be known that's what you're doing will still net you a ban.

Lol why are you rationalizing an honest mistake on both parts?. A mod didn't get the obscure reference/joke so he banned the guy, which is understandable. He should be unbanned now that mods know better.

My god why??? I dont know how much a AAA game cost? 50-100 million dollar?

Instead of spending 2000 million dollar, MS could have make 20-40 AAA games for the Xbone...
Ms please just build and expand your exitance first party team instead of buying them for crazy money...

off topic this is why i love My "San Antonio Spurs"

Here's what i think:
1. It should be worth more than $2bil
2. Microsoft trying to screw everyone because they know they're losing the console war. Minecraft will now only be exclusive to Xbox One...that sucks.
3. If i am Sony, I will buy it for more than $2bil just to screw Microsoft.

Make it on something that isn't Java so that it doesn't cause memory leaks and eat up more performance than Ryse of Crysis.
