WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Would they have the rights to pull it off other platforms? Not a minecraft player, but it's an interesting business move. There must be something else in the works for them to be worth $2 billion, I can't see that much more revenue coming from this minecraft.

my brain already confuses the words Minecraft and Microsoft when I read them side by side, might as well go to the logical conclusion

lol

I don't see what's in it for Microsoft. They already have Minecraft on all their systems. Do they want to retroactively cancel the PS3/4/V/iOS/Android versions?

Not sure why they'd do this, Minecraft is already on everything and they're unlikely to have a big hit again.

I guess they could make an exclusive sequel, but it would be weird considering how against this kind of stuff notch tries to seem.

Because a high purchase would be immediately valuable to the creators, and the gradual, ongoing profits would benefit the buyer, as well as access to the creative staff who remain with the team. The purchase would also give the Minecraft branding to the buyers, which presumably as one of the best-selling videogames ever, is worth something.

There is no way in hell they'd recuperate the cost.

Not smart.

Reminds me of companies like Rovio and King Games getting a ton of money because of one-hit-wonders.

Don't do it, MS.

I think a huge part of Minecrafts success is its independent, non-corporate nature. If this deal is real it could end in a Nadeo Trackmania 2 situation.

Such a waste of money if true...Minecraft is already available on other platforms. Here's a thought MS...spend that 2 billion on some new studios.

Notch probably realized that there will never be a big hit like Minecraft and decided to sell the company at it's max value before their other games have disappointing sales.

Why? While Minecraft is a gigantic success story, I'm not sure you can iterate on that concept. Mojang hasn't exactly had other big sellers either.

If Notch feels that he's hit his peak with Minecraft I don't exactly fault him for wanting to sell.

It's really hard to come up with something after that and not be called a failure by many since it doesn't do the same numbers. It's unfair but sadly that's how things do tend to go.

Never got why people think something must always have better and better numbers and go nuts when it doesn't. Probably why I hate business overall.

If MS are going to spend money on studios, I can completely see why they'd want Minecraft/Mojang but... on a personal level there are others that I think can contribute more (games and possibly revenue?) to Microsoft studios if they were willing to be bought, especially for that sort of money.

They picked a bad time to do it though... after PS3/4 versions were released.

If its even true.

If true, smart move for him.

Questionable move for Microsoft.

Miecraft is unlikely to be paralleled, let alone exceeded, in sales and attention... and it's already on PS3, PS4, PC, Mobile, and, soon, Vita.

Guess Notch is ready to cash out. Doesn't seem like he's been doing much lately anyway. Don't see what MS is getting out of this aside from Minecraft's future earnings. I wonder how long that would take to turn a profit on $2 billion...

If it meant coherent planning of development and features, decent PR and customer service, an official API and a team bigger than 6 people to run the world's most popular videogame, then I'm all for it.

damn, wall street journal reporting

what a rumor

maybe notch can direct his attention to helping with psychonauts 2 lol

I don't get it. Minecraft is already on PS4 isn't it? What's the point of buying Mojang if they don't get Minecraft as an exclusive?

Top Bottom
