WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Imagine the possible lawsuits that could happen if this deal were to actively go through. Microsoft retroactively removing games from other platforms after the fact? Nonsense.

Honestly I'm kind of struggling to think of any. MS are so bad at cultivating developer relations that there are no studios that seem like good options for them. Perhaps Playground or Crytek?

I wonder if Crytek would bite at 2 billion. They have been struggling recently.

They could just stop selling, unless there is a contract whit the other platforms holders that doesn't permit this(an intelligent thing to have on a contract). This has happened to some EA games on Steam.

They would bite at 2m$, just to have access to MS vaults to keep the studio alive.

...what? NinjaEdit: JINX

If Microsoft purchases Mojang, they aren't going to immediately shut down all non-Microsoft platforms for the game. If exclusivity was their concern, they would push it in successor versions of Minecraft.

Notch to get out of the gaming business and buy extremely expensive LP records instead:

http://www.factmag.com/2014/06/24/a...t-pressing-bought-by-minecraft-creator-notch/
Yesterday, we reported that the much-ballyhooed Aphex Twin test pressing of Caustic Window had sold for $46,300 on eBay, and now it appears that the winner was Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of über-popular video game Minecraft.

Persson initiated the rumors by tweeting “So I kinda paid a lot for a double LP from the ’90s,” which was retweeted by the official WATMM account; the man behind the whole Caustic Window Kickstarter later confirmed it.

I doubt MS will be able to just straight up cut Minecraft from Playstation plattforms.
I'm sure Sony signed some stuff to get Minecraft on PS plattforms and these contracts are still valid, even when the owner of the IP changes.

I doubt it. Look at what happens to digital games when rights holders change - they vanish from the various marketplaces.

Or because of what ever your grudge is about with Microsoft you can't see anything they do in a positive way. They are Satan and want to use Minecraft to destroy the industry.

Mojang made something like $200 million last year from merchandise sales.

Notch has more money then he could burn. He doesn't need the money, his last blog post points heavily in him telling MS to fuck off if the offer is even true.

http://notch.net/

Mojang does not exist to make as much money as possible for the owners. As the majority shareholder, I’d know. Every time a big money making deal comes up that would make a lot of money, it’s of course very tempting, but at the end of the day we choose to do what either makes the most sense for our products, or the things that seem like fun for us at Mojang.

They already managed to moneyhat Tomb Raider, a multiplatform title, from appearing from other platforms, then initially played it to the press as if it were an complete exclusive instead of a timed one. EDIT: Two different issues, I know. But still...

Idk. I just don't trust Microsoft to be fair about this, if the rumor is true. This is what Microsoft is about: they don't compete, they just try to monopolize and suffocate the market as much as possible...

This does not seem like the best way to spend $2 billion for a device that is losing in every market. Feels like another NFL deal, seems like a smart move on paper, but you could fund many, many, many more AAA titles with that amount of cash.

If they're doing this I'd assume it's for something new that's being worked on... because it just seems strange given how pervasive Minecraft is already.

Minecraft is the best selling game ever. Literally. That's it.

These stories are sketchy with the numbers, but fact is: Minecraft makes the type of money that Tripple AAA publishers could only dream about. And do it all with about 40 something employees. Thought they do use outside help for the console. mobile ports.

The blog post / press release they release if this turns out to be true is going to be full of the richest, creamiest PR bullshit this side of the XB1 reveal event.

Cant wait.

It's going to be so good.

They shouldn't even try, though.

"Fuck it, I took the money. Deal with it.

- Notch"

That's all that's needed.

Ridiculous as in

Nintendo will never get to see Minecraft

Ridiculous

If this deal goes through they probably have a higher chance of Microsoft putting minecraft on Nintendo systems.

Is there any point to this if Minecraft is going to release on the PS4 anyway?

Revenue from all future PS4 Minecraft sales go directly to Microsoft? Now add in every other version of minecraft and all the merchandising.

In a sick way, they could make money off the Playstation platforms. If they were to buy Mojang, they suddenly start taking in the profit that was coming in from sales on those platforms if they continue to allow sales. I can't imagine them pulling it because of how popular the franchise is. Subsequent releases of new products would then be on PC/Mobile/Xbox while I assume 4J continues to support the current releases. To me that makes sense because that means they're making money off Sony.

Though, I'm skeptical about the whole thing, I'll be watching the Xbox news site and various Twitter accounts all week long to see if anything else surfaces.

Is there even enough steam left in Minecraft for MS to make a profit after all this? I think anyone who wants to buy it would have bought it by now.

Of course. With this acquisition they'll be finally able to take on Apple, conquer the world of VR, build Minecraft amusement parks, create Minecraft movies, ride Minecraft merchandise to the bank and finally create a subscription based Minecraft MMO.

Maybe someone has brought it up already, would this be why there's no Minecon this year?

Wonder if Minecons will be a thing of the past now. Probably for the best if so, some of the stuff I've seen out of those Q&A sessions has been downright creepy.

So if this were to happen, this is what I imagine will happen.

PS3 and PS4 versions of the game will be discontinued. If you purchased it, you will still be able to play it, but no new purchases.

I could see a scenario where Sony and Nintendo handhelds get a version of the game though.

The game would be front and center on the Windows store, and believe it or not there are still people who have not playe Minecaft and would be interested in this version. I would also expect an edition for Windows Phones, but let's face it that is not exactly going to turn heads.

Mac, and Pocket versions of the game would continue to be sold.

MS would work with Mojang or on there own on a sequal for Xbox One and Windows 9 and 8. Then later it would be released everywhere else with the exception of Sony and Nintendo consoles. For that price they need to sell it to as many places as possible. Including android and Apple devices.

They would also use their signifigant resources to increase marketing, and merchandise sales. I believe the franchise has made 100's of millions off of that already.

And if they are lucky Mojang has been working on an existing game that will be huge.

I of course cannot run the numbers in my heads, but there is still a lot of money to be made here.

Thiat is what I think happens if MS does end up purchasing them.

Why? What would be the point? What is Mojang pushing out since minecraft that would be worth buying? It was lightning in a bottle.

The branding potential is still really strong. Plus they can build content in Minecraft to create retention that is where the growth of the product is.

Seems like a strange demo for them. Isn't Minecraft largely youth popular? I'm not a player so I could be wrong. My impression of the Xbox brand is more late-teens to late 30s. Perhaps they are trying to expand that. But I'm not sure one grab will do it. I'm curious how this goes down if it does. This seems more like what Ninty is into.

10x sales / ~15x ebitda (pulled out of my butt just now) seems very low for this industry. Mojang is smaller than I thought though.

They sort of took over the youth demo, at least as far as consoles with a combination of Kinect and Minecraft. As the Wii was finally slowing down, the 360 sort of seemed to replace it as the machine for kids and families.

Is there any point to this if Minecraft is going to release on the PS4 anyway?

AR and VR versions exclusive to Xbox and Windows 8/9 PC? It would be a stronger selling tactic for Fortaleza (their rumored AR glasses) than any $500M marketing campaign (like they did with Kinect) they could dream up. And partnering with Facebook/Oculus for PC seems like a way to detract kids from Sony Morpheus.

As a big fan of modded Minecraft I'd hate to see this happen. You can pretend all you want that Microsoft would continue to allow the mod scene as well or better than Mojang does but what you can't pretend is that all of that talent would want to continue modding for a game that went from small dev to megacorp.

If this is true then I don't see Microsoft pulling current versions of Minecraft from other platforms. It's an extremely popular title that has already been fully developed and released. Why pull all that work when you can reap the profits from every subsequent sale? Let the title build further popularity and then make the successor exclusive to Microsoft. That way not only do you attract people on your platform interested in a Minecraft successor but also those who bought the release on other platforms as well.

So if this were to happen, this is what I imagine will happen.

That's not happening. It would be cutting off your nose to spite your face. To bring up an actually relevant scenario, you can still use Skype on the PS3 and the Vita even though Microsoft bought them. There's just no PS4 support. If Microsoft were to buy Mojang, the same thing would basically happen. The PS3/4 versions would still be out there, the Vita version would probably still be released (though anyone hoping the Minecraft bundle that already wasn't going to happen would be extra disappointed) because there's been too much work done on that and it's been promoted too heavily to just shelve it. "Minecraft 2", on the other hand, would be MS only (Windows/WP/Xbox), with a possible expansion to Android/iOS.
