WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

I wonder if they'll make Minecraft exclusive to Xbox One, or if they'll continue to support PC. The PC was the game's biggest platform, but I have an Xbox One so I'm fine with whatever they end up doing.

Genuine question to detractors of this deal happening:

What makes you consider that Minecraft has reached its "end" or that MS is LTTP on acquiring it? Also, why do you feel (if this is applicable) that it's no longer a valuable IP?

Valuable IP sure... 2 billion valuable? Uhhh

The way you worded this makes me a believer, but perhaps I'm too easily swayed.

Not sure what MS brings to the leverage table...I mean, a Minecraft movie is already happening by Warner Bros., and the books/toys/clothes line has already taken off and is successful. Notch seems to be leveraging stuff fine on his own.

They use their money to buy developers and exclusives rather than create their own exclusives. This results in less games being available to gamers than otherwise. That's a net negative. During the original XBOX era these kind of tactics were understandable but still doing it over 10 years later is terrible for the industry. Sony did these same things when they launched the PS1 but they actually evolved after that.

This is such bullshit.

I think Minecraft is amazing and has some legs on it still to come, but I feel like this purchase would have been much better had MS done it before the current gen launched. If there was never a PS4 version (which I suspect is going to outsell the XB1 version by a lot) I think MS could have stuck while the iron ingot was hot, but now this seems like a tremendous gamble of continuing the Minecraft momentum without walling off all the markets that aren't MS exclusive.

How's Scrolls panning out nowadays? I don't hear anything about it anymore, and I would imagine the success of Hearthstone has put a serious damper on its popularity.

Like people have already said in the thread, the odds of Mojang ever coming close to the success of Minecraft again are close to nil. I know I've heard Notch himself acknowledge that a few times too. That's fine, it's just the way things work, and I do think that the ever progressing nature of Minecraft has created a lot of future value for the company even if it has already sold 50 million or so copies. People are going to continue to buy and play the game for the foreseeable future, so there's a lot of room for anyone who buys them to grind out a profit over the long term.

That being said, $2 billion does sound pretty damn high. Unless...

Microsoft to bring microtransactions to all versions of Minecraft confirmed.

Not really, and this is a really moronic comparison. Rare were good as "hole fillers" when Nintendo were on their own, but they didn't create mega hits like Minecraft. The closest they came was Goldeneye 007.

Mojang hasn't created megahits either.

Think that's the whole point.

I can see Minecraft 2 timed exclusivity for Xbone to boost sales then it come to PC 6 months later.

Savvy if true. GJ microsoft. Pay 2 billion for a developer that only made 1 game and has released it on every platform known to man already, nullifying any possibility of exclusivity. Keep that crossbone logic going. (Or is ot ecks bone)

If minecraft 2 ever came out it would be on the Xbox, so Microsoft are basically paying $2 billion to stop playstation owners from playing it. There is no way that this can be true as it would be an enormous waste of money, or if it is then Phil Spencer has lost his mind.

$2 billions are 5 millions xbone at 399$. Just saying

It's a one-hit wonder that's never stopped being a hit, and is more popular than ever.

You can say that about essentially any one-hit wonder until that moment when the popularity drops off... and it always does at some point. What's he bringing to the table that's new to justify that price? Where's the growth opportunity?

2 billion dollars could have been used to form 7 first party studios the size of 343i... But instead used to buy a Company at its peak. Hope This Is not another Rare disaster.

Minecraft is a lot like Tetris - worldwide phenomenom and a one-hit wonder for the dev team. Still, having the brand synonymous with Minecraft like Nintendo is with Pokemon could be worthwhile.

I dunno. I don't know if Mojang can make a second good title tbh I kinda think they (and by they I mean Notch) kinda just struck gold by accident.

But Minecraft's pretty huge and that alone might make this deal worth it?

Oh.. so now MS will spend that money on 14 different games of GTA V's price and all 14 games would sell and be as good as GTA.

Sigh is right.

Are you being purposely dense? GTAV was just referenced because of how much it cost to make and used as a reference to just how much money 2 billion is to games development.

Don't even joke. Donkey Kong Country was insane when it came out. The gameplay maybe have not been what pulled people in, but the graphics sure did. They basically saved the SNES.

If anything, buying Mojang is an even worse investment because they've made a one hit wonder and not much else.

Holy shit. And MS just bought themselves a part of that.
Plus, you know there'll be a video game.

You mean a Lego Minecraft video game? lol. That sounds a bit redundant. Although, I remember hearing there is gonna be a Minecraft movie, by the guys who worked on The Lego Movie, (don't quote me on that) a Lego Game could be based off of that.

He'll just be told he can't go anywhere else for a short amount of time. I'm sure he can bide his time for 2 billion dollars.

Eh, it'll be multiple years, or include a multi-year non-compete clause, or both.

I'm not saying he can't bide his time. I'd jump on this deal in a heartbeat if I were him.

What is their plan to recoup their costs? Sell everyone Minecraft again? Because Mojang ain't going to be putting out any other games of note. Basically, get the rights to the Minecraft name and milk that to death. Minecraft 2, and even more merchandise.
