WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump will touch on plans for overhauling the tax code and health-care system in his address to Congress on Tuesday night, but won’t seek any changes to Social Security or Medicare, White House officials said Sunday.

In his first address to a joint session of Congress, Mr. Trump is expected to emphasize two of his top legislative priorities, simplifying the tax code and dismantling the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with something else.

But Mr. Trump won’t push for curbing spending on Social Security and Medicare, two federal safety-net programs that Republicans have said for years must be overhauled to reduce the budget deficit.

“We are not touching those now. So don’t expect to see that as part of this budget,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures.

Mr. Trump campaigned for president promising a full border wall and continues to talk about building a “wall” along the border with Mexico. He is running into resistance from Republicans in Texas, where most of the unfenced land is located.

The president is expected to send a request for funding to build the wall to Congress in the coming weeks. Internal Department of Homeland Security estimates put a full wall’s initial cost at more than $21 billion. After repeated assurances that Mexico would pay the bill, Mr. Trump now says the U.S. will be reimbursed later, something Mexican officials say will never happen.

We may see gridlock for the House and Senate attempting to pass Trump's vision through Congress. The numbers don't add up.

This is going to be fucking embarrassing.

Same shit he was saying on the campaign trail, hurry and rush to take healthcare away from 20 million people and "replace it with something" when they get around to it. Fuck em.

I doubt the majority of the speech will be about either of those things.

Electoral win, innaguration turnout, Russian hoax, Clinton cabal, DNC rigged...

It's pretty amazing they still have to say -replace with "something else".

Also I bet most of that speech will consist more of the following three points rather than the policy named above:
1. The fake media
2. His tremendous EC win
3. Isn't that Hillary mean or what?

EDIT: Damn...

this is gonna be him talking about his election win and bashing the media. At least, that is all anyone will talk about because he is a child and can't stay on topic.

How is going to be embarrassing?

His party controls all three branches of the Federal Government and most governorship. He's only going to be advancing that agenda and he will get a lot of applause.

How is Paul Ryan going to be ok with them not dismantling stuff for poor people?

They're quite likely to dismantle stuff for poor people. They're just going to say they're not going to do it but do it anyway. Maybe Trump will hold the up the LGBT flag again while he's at it.

It's going to be no different than a campaign speech. I just don't trust him to not go off message. He'll say something crazy.

Also in regards to him not touching medicare. The current GOP plan for the ACA actually has cuts in medicare. So this will be interesting.

Can’t stump the diablos
I'm eager to hear his proposals in these arenas (especially healthcare). Time to see if the media has been misleading us once again.

Taxes are bad. Very bad. I've got people. The best people, working on taxes. They tell me that taxes are bad. And I'm going to make changes. The very best changes. And, Obamacare, I'm keeping my promise to repeal Obamacare. In fact, I'm keeping the best promises. And my crowds, let me tell you, the biggest. In fact, I won with the biggest margins ever. But the fake news won't tell you that.

Oh I agree. But that's gonna be the story of his Presidency. The context is speaking to Congress and he's their guy.

I think so too. Republicans are going to pass whatever Trump wants. It's in their best interest. Trump is for the wealthy, most of them are wealthy. None of them got into politics to help the poors.

A nice concerted attack on his ego the day before the speech should send him off the rails.

? Trump hasn't put out a plan, Congress has been putting out plans. Whether or not Trump signs off on those plans if they have medicare/SS cuts is another story(I have little doubt he will regardless of the promises he's making now).

And he probably won't. Most recent leaks suggest that the WH is considering not putting out a plan for taxes or for healthcare.

Give that the WH has essentially been on fire in the past month, I doubt that they would have the time to develop a robust plan. Such proposals are pages and pages long and require more rigor than shoddily put together EOs.

I expect the same crap he's been spewing for 6 months now. Nothing of any substance. Repeal and replace, the Movement like no other in history, fake news media, repeal and replace again, his huge electoral college win and finally repeal and replace.

"Simplifying the the tax code" aka lowering taxes for rich folk. Raising it on the poor. And dismantling as much of the social safety net and contract as possible.

Cue throngs of cheering from paid Repubs in hopes that the tax stuff will overshadow all of the other horrible things he's done inthe past 5 weeks.
