I'm pretty excited about this; first time in a while for that. Looking forward to seeing The Rock in the ring again, and the Rumble match itself, which usually makes this my favorite PPV. They recycle the same 2-3 endings over and over again, but it's usually good enough that I don't really care.

As tradition dictates I went back and watched some old rumbles this weekend, I decided to go with the more recent outings of 2010 and 2011.

2010
This is an interesting rumble in the sense that the ring doesn't fill up too often, the action tends to flow quite fast for the most part. Ziggler also kicked off this rumble at number 1 as well though he was dumped out swiftly to make room for the RR 2010 highlight that was CM Punk's straight edge sermons.
Between Punk's promos and Beth Phoenix eliminating Khali this rumble has a fun start, then HHH comes in and, well I wont say he ruins it but I don't think that Punk should've been taken out quite so fast by him. Trips also dunks Kane out pretty swiftly, bald Kane sucks in rumbles despite all the elimination accolades.

HBK with his craving to face Taker creates a nice angle for him here as he has more vigor and eliminates a fair amount of wrestlers including Trips which is always fun, between this and the previous Survivor Series a few months earlier where HBK kicked Mr H's head off in the first few seconds I wonder why HHH would trust this man at all.
Anyway you get a fun bit before HHH goes out where Cena heads out to overcome the DX odds including an awful double 5 knuckle shuffle that couldn't have looked worse.
R-Truth somehow eliminates Show and Henry at the same time which is an odd choice considering they weren't doing anything with R Truth at the time nor did they proceed to.
The big twist in this match is Edge's return which might be the only surprise entry in the match if i'm not mistaken.

The final four are Edge, Cena, Batista and HBK which considering the year this rumble takes place is in fact really really boring, all 4 are well established main eventers. HBK throws a fit when eliminated which is fun to watch, he's like s delirious old man getting back in the ring yelling and looking like he's missing a few screws before kicking a refs teeth down their throat.
Edge eliminates Cena to win in a very basic and boring way, Batista is standing right by the elimination spot as if to tease him playing up the sore loser card himself and maybe aid in Cena's defeat but nope, nothing.

2010 is a fun enough rumble but the finale banks too much on being excited for Edge's return i'd say, it's still one of the better ones in more recent years though.

2011
The first and only 40 man rumble, a shame because i'd love to see them do this again, it gets the jobbers in as well as more surprise entrants.
The IWC cream their collective pants for the start of Punk/Bryan and with good cause, as the numbers increase we're treated to JoMo using his prince of parkour powers to save himself from elimination by clinging to the barricade and Punk's new Nexus minions begin to unite and slowly but surely they take out everyone else. Also Chris Masters was still here in 2011?!

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned this to me in this thread earlier but the booking here is great fun, New Nexus gang up on each new entrant, from jobbers (who all try and make a beeline for a cowering Punk) to surprise returns like Booker T and also formidable giants like Khali who eliminates one member of Nexus only to have the next entry be a replacement with PALtista. Who can stop the new Nexus? oh you know who, Cena's music hits and for once it's great, no really, while at the time this happened I was probably cursing Cena for breaking out the Super Cena act looking back it's in fact perfect, Punk's face when Cena's music hits is priceless, the crowd get pumped up and deep down I confess to having the biggest grin watching Cena dick on jobber Nexus and start laying into Punk.

At this point I have to mention that in both 2010 and 2011 Cole is an complete douche to Striker, Cole keeps making swipes at Striker and it gets grating, Striker meanwhile is excited and happy to be commentating yet Cole keeps killing the mood and getting pissy when Striker corrects Cole's stupider statements (like when he attempts to correct Striker in 2010 for saying Number 2 has the same situation as number 1 because "number 2 has a few more minutes", fucking Cole. Really noticeable when Booker T comes out in 2011 and Striker starts "marking out bro" and Cole (in his awful heel run to boot) starts moaning and groaning, heaven forbid someone on the commentary team actually gets into the match Cole /rant.

Back to the rumble, somehow a team up of Cena and freakin' Hornswoggle dominating the ring like a face version of Punk's Nexus trick manages to be kind of fun if only to see Tyson Kidd get attitude adjusted by a midget. Of all people it's Kofi who stops the fun and games because Cena has mutual face respect for the Kofster or something. On a side note the bit earlier on where Punk spin kicks Swoggle in the head is priceless, almost is good is Sheamus brogue kicking the little fella off the top rope.
The ring starts filling up with bigger stars, Diesel returns to the delight of the crowd and all the usual suspects start filling out the final slots. I think Alex Riley botched here and got eliminated earlier than he should've, his elimination basically happens off screen to, still he comes back down for a distraction so Miz who joined on commentary can dump Cena over the ropes to the delight of us all, alas he didn't save himself and us from Cena/Miz at WM which was blooming awful.
Kane comes in last and proceeds to do shit all but one elimination where he's eliminated shortly after by Mysterio because WWE just love having Kane get duped by him in multi man matches, seriously, it's like a running joke and i'm not laughing, fortunately my other main man Barrett whomps Rey straight out afterwards.

The final four end up being Orton, Barrett, Del Rio and a forgotten Santino who is out cold outside the ring, the whole final finishing part seems a bit rushed as Orton quickly dispatches Barrett only to be swiftly dealt with by ADR who seemingly wins complete with music and everything until Santino emerges from the outside and Santino has this great yet odd capability to find himself in a big time situation and get the crowd behind him even if the reality of him main eventing WM is pretty awful, false hopes get dashed as ADR counters the elimination attempt to re-win the rumble.
All in all this rumble is really fun to watch, of course WWE fucked up with ADR that year but I hope they take this angle again and have a the rumble victory go to a newer star who's more of an outside chance choice, if I see Cena or Orton in the final four this year I think I might cry.

I briefly looked back at 2012, man that's a pretty shitty rumble, it speaks volumes that the most hyped the crowd seems to get is for Kharma entering to beat down Cole or maybe Road Dogg, as for established stars the fans don't seem to care aside from Orton and Jericho and why should they in a rumble that's drier than a desert when it comes to big names and exciting entrants? awful rumble, somehow we went from 40 men to barely having 30, for some reason despite Ziggler and Show being able to pull double duty Cena and Kane do not and dare I say this rumbles misses Cena's presence meanwhile the hopes of Kane topping HBK's rumble record falls further out of reach. This one at least finishes with a good 10 minute punch up between Y2J and Sheamus and has Kofi's handstand brilliance.

So onto this year, surely it has to top last year but for the love of all that is decent don't hand the victory to Cena or Orton, the only things those two are good for is putting me on the edge of my seat with terror if I think either is going to win, but I do look forward to seeing what situation Cena will enter to this year, he always gets the fun entries.....it'll be number 2 to try and out iron man Ziggler because it's fuckin' Cena

Fun fact: In the 6 Rumble matches he's been in, John Cena has NEVER drawn a number in the first half of the match. Not one time.

2003 - #18 out of 30
2004 - #28 out of 30
2005 - #25 out of 30
2008 - #30 out of 30
2010 - #19 out of 30
2011 - #22 out of 40

He didn't even draw an early number in the "make up Rumble" Heyman set up in 2004 to account for Noob Saibot's defection to RAW. In that match, he drew #10 out of 15 entrants.
So much for overcoming the odds.

I'm about to shoot right now. This is a shoot, brother.

The Rock has my respect for coming back at 40 while being a real star who doesn't need this crap and working real matches. I still can't believe he went nearly 30 mins at WM last year. I mean, it showed because the dude was blown up about 10 mins in, but still.

He overcame the #30 odds.

On a similar note I hope Orton doesn't turn up in the last few entries again, two years running he's come trotting out near the end and snuck into the final four, how boring.
Then there's Big Show who often turns up in the late entrants and proceeds to do nothing of worth, his entry at number 30 last year deflated the crowd as well as Wrasslegaf.
Though maybe it's a big man trend, Kane was last in 2011, Show in 2012, HENRY IN 2013!

DDP's only Rumble appearance ever ends with an off-camera elimination while the Godfather dances with a dozen escorts at the curtain. Hilarious!

I have entered the Royal Rumble!

Now I just need to find a good Rock avatar.

I don't get this...Aren't the matches choreographed?
He knows if he's going to win or not.

Or is this him being in character for the WWE fans?
You best shut your damn mouth before The Rock slaps the taste out of it!

The '02 Rumble was littered with talent.

Five in right now: Steve Austin, Mr. Perfect, Kurt Angle, RVD, HHH after his comeback

Hall of Pain re-opens tonight.

i wish.

im not sure how people felt about him but i actually liked him during his title run. i mean I'm sure if i actually thought about it he was awful, but at the time he was a legitimate tough guy heel. there haven't been one of them since brock. i won't let hindsight or gaf attempt to change my mind

plus he has the second best theme song of all-time, behind dlo brown of course

Watching the old, but still recent Rumble matches. It always seems like WWE had a plan for Mania from the Rumble on, but I honestly don't remember many "mini-stories" from the past 3 years of the Rumble.

The story is pointing at the WrestleMania sign.
