WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006 - First Info

For those interested, IGN posted a Q&A session, which lists the first info about WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006:

SmackDown vs. RAW 2006: World Premiere

Qucik bits from the article that I've read:

- Buried Alive Match added
- New stamina and Hardcore stats for wrestlers
- 60+ wrestlers

I quickly browsed through it, so that's all I have now.

We gathered quite an extensive list of improvements and new features that we wanted to add to the game. We gathered a lot of stuff, obviously, from all the reviews we got... especially from you [Laughs]. But we also got a lot from the fans on all the major message boards. In the end, we walked away with a really extensive list and we were really ambitious this year and we are planning on having a lot of new features.

Oh crap, I sincerely hope IGN and Gamefaqs was not part of the message boards they gathered input from, otherwise THQ's list will look something like this:

"teh spinnar beltz!!1!"

"flamin tables"

"@the real music!!1!!"

"more bl00d!!1!"

"Stun cold!!!1 stun cold!11 ston cold!11!"

And so on.

Oh their improving it this year are they? It is a fucking pity the game needs a whole damn redesign to even being to be anything that you could call respectable.

Sorry, Manolo. I changed it to something different. Enjoy Tyson winking at you.

I have to say that the models do look great. Hopefully the features, gameplay, CAW, and roster can help rebuild my loyalty towards this series. At least the Buried Alive match looks like it'll play out well, something I feared about the mode ever being put in.

Another Yukes update. Fuck em.

No Aki, no buy, WWe can burn in hell. Or buried.

Motherfuckers keep shiting out the same old game over and over, I remeber the day when a new Aki wrestling game was up there with Zelda, MGS in terms of anticipation and quality.

Blame AKI and EA.

I guess Bish can confirm this, but I think AKI has an exclusivity contract in Europe and NA with EA.

which means more RAPPER crap.

as an Xbox owner I would kill for this game. I know it isnt good, but it has to be better than Wrestlemania 21.

WWE is trying to get out of its THQ contract (some lawsuit with Jakks Pacific).. Im hoping by sometime next gen EA and AKI are working with the WWE brand.

Pick up one of the Raw games, IGN has nothing but good things to say about them.

Same thing every year:

-The models get improved.
-It's made by Yuke's.
-Fans bitch that it's not made by AKI
-They buy the game anyway
-Repeat next year

I'll stick with Ultimate Muscle, Def Jam, and Rumble Roses for my wrasslin' fix, atlhough I may get Day of Reckoning 2 this year.

I do wish Yuke's would take the graphics engine and CAW from RAW 2 and give the game the Smackdown! Vs. RAW game play style for Xbox. I'd buy that in a heartbeat; loved the CAW in Raw 2 since you could actually update the wrestlers themselves...only thing missing was more hair styles. I had more fun updating the wrestlers to match their current attires on the shows than I ever did playing the game. ^_^;

Hey! Def Jam rocked city blocks, wtf are you on man?

The game rocks, but goddamn, the basic engine is made for wrestling. RETURN TO WRESTLING. I'm not a fan of the setting of the game. I just play it cause it's fun.

Also bish, I came a few times to see you at the dawn of war stand during e3. everytime I came by, you were explaining the game to some other dude. Hope that we can talk next year.

Also, the WWE part of the THQ booth during e3 was so small ... and pointless.

no widescreen or progressive?

eff you Yukes....your engine isnt that advanced that it couldnt handle the extra processing required to implement these features.

I never had a chance to play SD6, but SD5 had some horribly unforgiving AI. Did they ever fix that in SD6?

Bummer, you should have interrupted or thrown something soft and squishy at my head, didn't stop sp0rsk, meier and the rest of the Find Your Father posse from saying hello. Maybe next year. :D

i dunno why i'm even reading this, i'm not gonna buy, rent or even try the game out, i learneed my lesson years ago...

oh, and the second def jam... no, not a very good wrestling game either...

guess i'll stick to whatever table scraps spike puts out...

I was loling at this

IGN: How do you recover from being completely exhausted? If you're incapacitated how can you even hope to?

Cory Ledesma: Your stamina can be regenerated anytime you want during the match. That's part of the strategy. So in the past, once you knocked your opponent down you probably beat on him some more or taunted. Now you may want to use that time conserve your stamina and hold it for when it's time to pull of your finisher.

Devin Knudsen: There's an actual button press that manually regenerates your stamina. But even if you don't use it, you'll slowly gain it back depending on your stamina attribute. But trust me, it's better to use the manual stamina regenerator -- it's a lot more useful.

Cory Ledesma: Yeah, that manual button is almost like you're selling your injury or how much your guy is breathing in anger. And that rewards you with a quicker stamina boost than just allowing it to come back normally.

sounds...familiar....

Sounds lik eYukes is stealing something from the Spike camp.

Doesn't matter, I'll buy it like I do every year. I do require one thing though.

Give me a SEAON mode and not a fucking STORY mode. How hard is it to just have a years worth of matches with rankings and title contenders?

One other thing TITLE FIGHTS IN EXHIBITION! Why is it no one can seem to get this right? No mercy did it YEARS ago.

I think because they hard code the storylines into the game now so they cant do it

however in no mercy they did altho it was funny sometimes with the text in the promos

(kurt angle beats rock for belt)

(replays the game)

You cannot step up to the great one jabroni you will never beat The Kurt Angle!

More Yukes WWE garbage and no new King of Collosseum. This year sucks for wrestling games.

Fire Pro is cool and all but KOC is ten times better. I'd much rather Spike spend their time working on it. <sigh>

Fuck you up your face (jokingly of course). :) Fire Pro Returns will ROCK THE WORLD.

Well, yeah, nothing beats Fire Pro. You're all being way too hard on the SD series, though. It's still a lot of fun with a couple friends (especially with last year's new Royal Rumble 'ring out' meter).

I don't doubt that it will "rock the world" but still, it's just Fire Pro in the end...a series which has had essentially the same gameplay since the SNES days. Don't get me wrong, I like Fire Pro but the actual gameplay is getting pretty archaic. Now, compare that with KOC--a series that has made tremendous strides in only two iterations. Personally, I'd much rather they concentrate their efforts on it than simply giving me a few new arenas and 200 extra Fire Pro wrestlers.

I hear ya. Hell, all I want is an arcade ladder....sorta like the old Pro Wrestling. It could even have a new random champ every time you play.....and just let me beat down guys one by one on my way to the belt. But noooo, we have to have this TV show crap.

500 edit slots for CAWs, create your own rings, revamped Cage matches, new moves, better CPU logic... it's Fire Pro for the fans. KOC will no doubt hit again, but another Fire Pro was NEEDED after Z was pretty blah compared to D. Needed much more than a new KOC after KOC II.

you remind me of this one guy i know that still plays D... i mean, it's still #2, but after playing KOC, i like the ability to connect with strikes without having to align myself with the moon and the stars

last gen. i used to have so much fun with the N64 of WWF no mercy

and then there was this ps2 WWE games. i think the only one i liked was shut yout mouth, played it for sometime and then i got bored.

and since then i dont even follow WWE anymore. i think it happened when undertaker stole kid rock music, i was like "f%^%. form undertaker and scary guy to some punk shit... "

and that was it

If the animation in DOR2 doesnt improve, then no buy from me.

Fuck this shit, AKI is the king of animation. No equal inhabits this here earth.

I'm not knocking KOC. FP and KOC are two different types of sims (sort of). KOC is fnadamntastic in itself, and another one will come (the engine in KOC is great, but still needs work, so an update will help). However, FPR is coming anyways, so embrace it. =) And uh, striking in Fire Pro isn't all that hard to begin with. Bout as hard as oing moves in KOC for the first time getting used to the flow of the animation. Once you got it, it's natural.

This is proof that most of you disrespecting the smackdown franchise really have no idea what you are talking about.

The animation is Smackdown is hands down the best animation in any wrestling game. There are still a few crappy looking animations in the series (Hopefully those will be thrown out the window this year), but all the animations done after SYM are leagues better than any n64 wrestling title. i expect to be lynched for this remark, but its the god honest truth.

I love the aki titles, but they had flaws just like any other wrestling series...like remember having to do a corner grapple just to do a hurricanrana or dragon-rana instead of just being able to jump off the top rope and do it? Smackdown is a series that has improved greatly and its getting better and better. If any of you people who are trashing SD actually read the preview for SvR 06, you would know that they are making the game a much more strategic simulation, and I think it will be better than No Mercy. Especially with the stamina recovery (from my favorite series, Fire Pro), the improved momentum system (especially with how you have to hit your finisher at the perfect time in the match for it to do the most damage), the hardcore stats, the improved momentum system..power irish whips, the extra grapple mode (for a total of 25 front grapples per wrestler...thats hot), online stat tracking and the improved reversal system which sounds a lot like no mercys reversal system, but perhaps better....Check out this info on the new reversal system!

That said, the big change this year is that once you've reversed a strike you'll actually be in a holding pattern where you can then easily follow it up with an action of your own fairly quickly. Because of this speedy reversal recovery, your opponent will be able to do the same thing and reverse whatever you do just as quickly. If you're good, you'll be able to reverse up to three times in one chain and it's another way we wanted to reward experienced users for sticking with us for so long.

You guys need to stop living in the past, Smackdown is no longer shitty. As long as they keep taking the best features from other series, especially the japanese titles, Yukes will be the king of American wrestling franchises.

I still play No Mercy and WCW/nWo Revenge from time to time, matter of fact, those are the last wrestling games that I've bought. I just rent the recent games, none have given me the urge to run out and buy 'em. Though the Smackdown series seems to be improving.

BTW, thank heaven 'Taker ditched that biker gimmick.

Rebumping for more info from IGN today

July 13, 2005 - In a surprise move made by THQ's European division today, additional details regarding the upcoming brawler, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 were revealed on the company's official mini-site -- all of which should come as good news for diehard wrestling fans.

Of course, the most important bit of news was that title belts could now be defended online via a "virtual WWE Championship" with career leader boards and a permanent ID system that tracks all of your user stats. Additionally, fixes to the season mode have been made so that players can now play through two full seasons without repetition, and superstar-specific storylines complete with voice-over have also been included.

Other interesting details included the revelation that there are more than 100 different match types, including the already-revealed Buried Alive contest and a still-mysterious Bar Brawl. New removable costumes for the divas have been added as well, so the guys who always wanted to rip off nurse, school girl, and French maid outfits from their favorite female superstar can finally do so in a legal way. Wrestlers and their environments have been given added functionality too -- with the ability to play possum and a new "sleeper hold submission system" joining fully customizable 3D locker rooms and an extensive create-an-entrance option. Brand new (unannounced) legends and three levels of blood will also be implemented.

As you can see the new list of features is pretty promising, but how all of it is going to work is a question we can't answer until we see it firsthand. Stay tuned for more as it develops.

BIG PLUS for the leagues and online title defendability we would have to have a GAF league as im sure cheating will be rampant otherwise.

ok bar brawl "could" be cool, and what is a customizable 3d locker room?

WWE Cribz? lol

If you like characters that move like robots. Seriously, the motion in that game is just so fucking unnatural that it's creepy. I don't CARE if it's been mocapped, it LOOKS like it's animated at 5 keyframes a second. I don't know if it's a fault of an archaic motion format or bad weighting or what, but it looks like crap and the move transitions are a joke.

The RAW games sucked donkey wang but they were running very complex IK that allowed for incredibly smooth blending between moves. I haven't played the GC ones so I can't comment.

Get back to work, THQ employee!
