X-Com: Enemy Unknown Ironman Challenge [On Again For 2012]

Nice writeup Acosta :D But i gotta say you lost probably one of few soldiers capable of destroying the alien threath, your only choice now is to start over again
fuck i died :(

I love threads like this, im thinking of doing a XCOM TFTD play through and having guests play against me using XCOM Util options...

What we need is 1 player playing and NGAF Creative Writing Group™ doing the AARs.

p.s. thank god I found out how to fix the MI Bug. My game is progressing nicely.

A NeoGAF X-COM Ironman Let's Play? Sounds good.

Restarted on Veteran. I guess first mission deserves a screenshot-run.

UFODefense2010-04-2412-17-16-63.jpg

A landed small UFO vs. 2 HWPs and 6 rookies armed with rifles and one laser pistol. Should be easy.

Ruuppa: Move it boys! We have space zombies to kill! Stay frosty!
Acosta: Woo!
Tank: RAWR!

UFODefense2010-04-2412-17-22-57.jpg

Tank: RAWR!
BOOM. One Sectoid down, but it happened too fast to capture :(

I start moving the tanks south, with myself running behind them while the rest of the gang circles the ship, looking for strays.

UFODefense2010-04-2412-18-53-57.jpg

UFODefense2010-04-2412-19-30-85.jpg

The tanks take out 3 Sectoid scumbags on the way, leaving my rookies without kills, but alive.

Bit uneventful, but I get to the ship's door right easily.

UFODefense2010-04-2412-25-00-85.jpg

methane47: Guys! I'm going to go in and bust some alien ass!
Ruuppa: That's a negative! We need to rush in as a-
methane47: Eff that! RAAA!!!

UFODefense2010-04-2412-25-26-26.jpg

methane47: DIE ALIEN SCUMBAGS!
*No AP to perform action*
methane47: ...
Sectoids: ...

*No picture. Imagine plasma-rape to the face.*

methane47:Blargh!

Gexecutor: Nooo! methane47!! I'll avenge you!
Gexecutor rushes in and after some dakka-dakka kills one sectoid.

*Again, no picture, got too hectic for me and I forgot :(*

Gexecuter: I got one! I got one!
(Gexe got shot in the back 3 times by plasma while retreating there, and only lost a bit of health. Damn my lousy screenshotting abilities!)

Ruuppa: Okay guys, one more left, concentrate!!
Gexecuter: Pff! As if one alien can match us and the tanks!

Cue for the last alien to run out, kamikaze style, and autofire the cluster of my goons standing to the right of the doorway.

Gexecuter: Blargh!
archnemesis: Likewise!
jim-jam bongs: RAA! *dakka-dakka*

And with that, the last sectoid falls.

Casualties: methane47, Gexecuter, archnemesis.

Welp, at least I survived. And jim-jam bongs got promoted to Sergeant for his itchy trigger finger.

geoscape_000.png

Bad month. Lost my second interceptor base and now Europe has no coverage at all. Set up a bunch of new detection/interception bases but am not hopeful for their survival.

Next month I have to take on an alien base or two to try and get things under control.

Man, I shouldn't have started playing at this moment, I forgot how soul sucking this game is, I stayed 5 hours more until 4 am after that write-up of mine and after getting some hours of sleep I keep playing.

The thing is I have just restarted again and again, trying to relearn stuff. Once I remembered a bit how to position my units and so and how fucking treacherous this game is, I did a succesful land mission and captured lot of alien stuff, decided to start ironman there with lots of fun.

No pics because I was so engaged on relearning stuff that I could't stop (but I will try to make another for sure) but some funny bits:

Master Tactician: (after killing two aliens that way) haha, perfect formation!, three man advancing cautiously back to a tank to absorb damage. Unstoppable! Wait, what is that? ("that" was an alien grenade by the way) *BOOM* Three man killed, tank badly damaged.

My last brilliant moment was, as a I was feeling confident and built an alien containment, trying to capture alive some aliens. I intercepted a very small ship and I figure I could do it with a bunch of rookies, some stun rods and a tank. Well, I actually forgot that I should face the alien with the rod to make it work, so even if I arrived to melee range, I couldn't use because it wasn't the right position. While I was figuring out, a single alien killed five men and a tank, good thing I left one on ship so I could escape. Yay me!

Stupid mistake, but I honored the ironman spirit and saved anyway, getting a break now. But the level of greatness of this game is ridiculous.

I've restarted on Superhuman, with the main base located by the Black Sea.

The first two Monthly Reports were good, even though I've been losing a lot of soldiers (5-6 per mission, usually). No crafts were lost during the same period.

geoscape_018.png
geoscape_024.png

I even had a mission in the mountains, which is pretty rare.

tactical_007.png

UFO activity was pretty low during this period (we had no more than 20 UFO sightings), but in march the aliens began to hammer South America pretty hard. Being a territory not covered by our radar I had no choice but to wait and see. And then something happened: the aliens invaded Rio de Janeiro during the Carnival!
The team was ready and after a 14-hours flight, the X-Com ATS (Anti-Terror Squad) arrived in Brazil...

TERROR SITE 1

The ATS for this mission consisted of 8 Soldiers armed with laser rifles, hand grenades, proximity grenades, smoke grenades, medikits. Since the Skyranger landed during the day, the flares were left on board.

1. The ATS decides to go with the standard deployment: a smoke grenade is thrown just outside the Skyranger during the first turn to protect the soldiers from enemy snipers.

01Start.jpg

2.
Rookie Karin Vogel is the first to disembark and she immediately finds two enemies: two disc-shaped robots are lurking in the shadows.

02FirstContact.jpg
032Discs.jpg

3. Karin's hands are shaking, she's not sure she'll be able to hit the targets. She asks for a backup and Rookie Hans Meyer doesn't miss. That's a confirmed kill, and the alien scream they hear suggests that it's not the only one!

04HansFires.jpg
2n16ae.gif

4. With the help of Rookie Patrick Watson the other disc meets the same fate of its companion.

06SecondBoom.jpg

5. The aliens retaliate: they are using mind control tactics and Rookie Vogel is panicking! To avoid nasty surprises, the team leader orders the backup soldiers in the craft to drop down their weapons.

07VogelPanic.jpg
08Precautions.jpg

6. Rookie Watson advances and spots 3 aliens: 1 cyberdisc and 2 sectoids. The choice of the target is easy: Patrick goes for the disc and BOOOOM! at least 3 aliens are down!

093onsight.jpg
10Aimforthedisc.jpg
11Threedown.jpg

6. The aliens are unimpressed by the ATS' feats: they kill Rookie Meyer with a precise plasma shot and then manage to mindcontrol Rookie Vogel who kills her fellow soldier Patrick.

eimpab.gif
12Vogelmind.jpg
35ku5tv.gif

7. Shocked by the death of her friend, Rookie Vogel runs towards the aliens, seeking vengeance. And she immediately finds it: revenge is NOT a dish best served cold. (Too bad she will end the mission unconscious, hit by a stun grenade after panicking again)

15Revengepart1.jpg
16revengepart2.jpg

7. At this point, the ATS leader decides to use a pincher tactic on the aliens, thus Rookie Karin Seidler is sent to secure the streets in the northern part of the map...
"This is going to be bad", thinks Karin when she sees three sectoids waiting for her on the street. Unluckily for her, "bad" isn't just enough to describe the situation she's gotten in and when she decides to use two snap shots on the nearest alien (missing them both), her fate is sealed.

18Uh-oh.jpg
2hxxf8.gif

8. Having lost 4 soldiers, the rest of the squad has to be deployed. Sergeant Jurgen "The Bliss" Manger (the ATS leader) manages to reach the road on the other side of the map unharmed. But the aliens are suddenly on him. With two laser volleys, the Sergeant manages to kill the two sectoids. And he's ready to secure the road...

20TheBliss.jpg
124v4lz.gif

9. ...and another alien appears! "The Bliss" disposes of it with ease, but he meets an untimely death while getting out of the building. That blasted corner!

22Youregoingdowntoo.jpg
2n66smb.gif

10. The loss of the Squad Leader is a huge hit on the morale of the surviving soldiers: the two who were following Sergeant Manger get themselves involved in a gunfight with a couple of aliens, but they both die (killing only one sectoid). Only one man remains: his name is John Watson, but soon he'll be known as The Miracle Worker.
While his comrades were battling in the buildings, he managed to reach the road and get to the spot were "The Bliss" was killed. He's very cautious and he advances step by step.
Then, suddenly, an alien appears from nowhere and shoots... John is hit, but he doesn't die. His opportunity shot misses the alien, but the next one is right on the target.

25Alegendinthemaking.jpg
2edo2ll.gif
28.jpg

11. John isn't happy about his first kill, though: he's severely wounded (9HP), he's bleeding (-2HP per turn), he's the last man standing and he doesn't know how many aliens are left and were they are. And the Skyranger is too damn far away... he'll bleed to death before getting to it. He braces himself, and tries to get to the craft anyway. And then... an alien is waiting for him...

29.jpg

12. John auto-fires at him... MISSED! but the alien misses too and then tries to get in a better position instead of firing again at John...

nofp6t.gif

13. John is still alive, but not for long... "Patricia, help me", he thinks, while pulling the trigger again and again, eyes covered in blood.
MISSED! MISSED! MISSED! MISSED! MISSED! HIT!
The alien goes down screaming... "Maybe I'll live a bit more..."

k4uxc1.gif

14. Thus the last turn for John begins. With only 1 HP he'll be death at the end of this round, since he won't reach the Skyranger in time. His only goal, now, is to kill as many aliens as possible before passing out. That's why he decides to follow that strange noise (similar to an automatic door opening) he heard just a second before. Was it an alien? Or a civilan? Or just his imagination?

32b.jpg

15. An alien it is! This will be John last shot... he pulls the trigger...

4tvj9u.gif

16. Then... all is black...

35.jpg

end.jpg

Who cares about rating! Defeating the enemy by killing the last alien on the last turn with the last man standing on his last HP is just crazy! :lol

Holy shit Versipellis! :lol In other news i have encountered a little problem, i went head and attacked an alien base while an alien craft was right on it, as soon as the the battle started i noticed something wrong: Everything was black! everything except the interface was black so i couldn't see anything, to make matters worse my last save in the geoscape was awhile ago. I'm gonna check if i can fix it somewhow otherwise i am reloading my save.

After getting my whole squad wiped out completely on a night terror mission in Lagos, I restarted. First month always goes sort of OK, but night missions at first are terrifying experiences - Rookies with no armor..

Well, here's my first night mission of the campaign so far :lol

thdosbox2010-04-2318-35-50-26.jpg

OK guys, off the craft.. and pray you don't get killed right away!

thdosbox2010-04-2318-44-00-91.jpg

thdosbox2010-04-2318-44-03-55.jpg

Phew.. So far so good, perimeter secured, we got off the craft, tossed chemical flares all around, set up a defense and are hoping nothing blasts us to oblivion.. The plan is to split into two squads, one moving up north and then east while one heads east through the fields, with the Rocket Launcher providing support from behind.

thdosbox2010-04-2318-47-23-08.jpg

thdosbox2010-04-2318-53-26-49.jpg

And the squad moving through the field glimpses the silhouette of the first enemy.. I have no idea what it is, but I sure as hell want it dead. So I take an aimed shot with the rifle and.. right between the eyes! This rookie has promise. Now that it's dead I know it's a sectoid, these suckers are easy to take with grenades so I toss one near the body, just in case..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-00-35-87.jpg

..and nothing dies. So the second squad continues to advance through the apple orchards when..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-02-31-47.jpg

thdosbox2010-04-2319-02-37-85.jpg

..a sectoid opens fire on them and misses completely. Shiiiii.. I have enough points to do an aimed shot, fire a few bursts or.. Prime and throw a grenade! YAY!

thdosbox2010-04-2319-02-50-22.jpg

And I throw..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-03-42-25.jpg

Sucker.. I missed, it's the gray dot in front of the alien, behind the bush wall.. Here's to hoping he dies..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-05-12-03.jpg

Well, explosion, no screams.. I throw a chemical flare and the body isn't there.. Shit! OK, let's set up defensively and see what happens..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-06-47-39.jpg

The alien appears in sight, my guys fire and.. miss.. it fires and.. misses.. So now it's my turn, and the guy who lobbed the grenade, fired, and failed to do any damage is staring the Sectoid right in the eyes.. What do I do? Well, I bring the Heavy Cannon with HE rounds and get the job done the way it was meant to be.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-07-26-22.jpg

Hastalavista baby.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-10-59-66.jpg

Now we have 3 bodies, that means there should be a couple more, maybe one in the UFO and one to the south, in the farm buildings, so I advance.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-15-04-59.jpg

OK, Farm looks dangerous, but I made it inside the UFO fine, time to get the last sucker!

thdosbox2010-04-2319-18-36-07.jpg

SHIIIIII!!!!!!! FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE!

thdosbox2010-04-2319-19-28-56.jpg

GUYS! WE GOT TWO! YAY! The doors shut closed and I hear foorsteps.. So my Heavy Cannon gal loads AP ammo, and opens the door.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-20-14-55.jpg

Hello Mr. Sectoid! I fire at you twice!

thdosbox2010-04-2319-20-33-25.jpg

And miss twice. Gotta love Rookies. The door closes. I bite my nails, waiting for it to open and the sectoid to unload plasma into me.. but it doesn't happen.. So I press forward.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-22-37-84.jpg

The rifleman walks in confidently and fires two auto bursts, failing to hit even once. So the Heavy Cannon gal walks up from behind and..

thdosbox2010-04-2319-22-58-91.jpg

Third time is a charm.

By now my other squad has managed to secure the Farm which proves empty and the mission ends.

thdosbox2010-04-2319-23-23-76.jpg

A couple more UFO crashes later, first month ends on a high note.

thdosbox2010-04-2400-06-41-12.jpg

What can I say. Game is super awesome.

My game is pretty glitchy: in large, crowded maps some tiles get messed up (it shows even in my report). Your problem seems to be different though. Silly question: have you tried centering the view on one of your soldiers?
My suggestion is: abort the mission. You'll get a poor ranking (but that's nothing) but you shouldn't lose your craft and your soldiers.

I tried centering the view on one my soldiers, still nothing. I even went to the map and it showed darkness, no estructures no nothing, just some spots that i think represent my soldiers. I am gonna do as you say and abort the mission, thanks for the suggestion. Oh here's a picture showing what i'm talking about:

Well, NeoGAF, you should be proud. Just renaming my soldiers with the nicknames of some of the people here makes wonders: I've just won a terror mission at turn-1, without firing a single shot. :lol

Wut? How did that happen? :lol

I don't know why, but sometimes (not too often, of course) it happens that you arrive at a terror site (and at a UFO location too, I think) and as soon turn 1 starts, it ends. You get points from alien artifacts and nothing else.

It must be a bug or the aliens forgot about terrorizing and simply went for a stroll leaving their stuff in the location. Also i captured an alien leader, the end is on sight but not before i use some more gaffers :D

Even if the back of your ship is against the edge of the map, the noob alien launcher will still find you...

Luckily only stun this time.

(Yes, I know I spelled "Ermey" wrong /spelchekfail)

Oh my goodness, that's pretty much ever mission I've ever attempted.

All those guys dead off the ramp.

So sad =(

They were just stunned. Was recovering small alien ship I shot down so and figured wings of plane, edge of map, and wrecked UFO would block any shots so I just walked everyone off back en masse. There were only 3 live aliens and one happened to have launcher...

One thing that X-Com pounds into your head over and over again is you can't take any mission or situation for granted or you'll pay dearly.

Happened to me last night while landing at an alien base. Looks like the only thing to do is reload or abort and retry the mission.

Ok, so I couldn't resist starting up a new game after reading through this thread. :D

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce the greatest weapon of all time. :D

Yeah I am quickly reaching that point in my game now :lol

I don't need much more than an occasional injection of Elerium. I have bases that are just massive depots. They're built to house a Decoder, Mind Shield, Grav Shield, Fusion Ball D, and General Stores. They're full of Elerium, Alloys, UFO components and HP Clips. I'm going to start going on missions with just 2 HP/HWPs, Psi Amps and Blaster Launchers.

Also about ready to make my final two core teams.
Team A = Psi effective group
Team B = Everybody else

This has caused me trouble in the past. I've had my A-Team (duhhh duhn duhn duhhnnn) get blastered all to hell. It's so much harder for me to finish the game without a psi-resistant team.

Whoa, some awesome AAR's on this page. An animated one too! Kudos, Versipellis. I love it when stuff like that happens.

My game's going alright I guess, I'm getting decent ratings each month but I'm really struggling for cash and resources. I've got a base in the UK and one in South East Asia and I'm barely detecting any UFO's to shoot down compared to the usual amount of traffic in these areas. My research has gone really well but I just don't have the resources to take advantage of it. This is the first time I can remember this really being a big issue for me. Thanks to whoever mentioned manufacturing laser cannons for profit, thats helping a bit. Now that the tougher alien races (mutons, ethereals) are starting to make their presence felt I can see things going downhill soon. Need to get a functional base going in one of the areas where all the UFO activity is going down.

:bows:

That soldier is now the X-Com Commander :lol

In my world it's now October, and my X-Com is still alive and kicking. I had a terrible March, but we soon made a comeback with 6 consecutive months with excellent ratings. September saw the arrival of the Ethereal race, and I've lost 3 Skyrangers while trying to capture one of them for my research on PSI abilities. My scientist already discovered the base on Mars and my Avenger is ready to go, but first I want to find which soldiers will be able to withstand the PSI attacks on the Red Planet. The construction of my first PSI training area is well underway now... just a little more and then... Cydonia, here we come!

March: -951 (UFOs were showing in areas not covered by my radar located in Europe)
April: +682
May: +391
June: +60 (Not so many UFO showed up)
July: +3166 (conquered an alien base and captured the commander)
August: +1073 (repelled an attack on my main base)
September: +1804 (even though I lost 3 crafts, I captured a couple of Medium sized UFOs and a Very Large one).
October: still playing

And I'm still on Superhuman with Ironman rules, that's why I'll be extra cautious before embarking on the last mission.

Oh shoot, I can't read. Thats quite the bug, were you able to recover anything/get a good rating?

It gave me 60 points for some alien artifacts, nothing more (no civilian saved, alien corpses, etc.)

I've got a solid group of Psi-Resistant troops.
I've got some spare Heavy Plasma Hovertanks.
I've got 3 Avengers, several firestorms and more interceptors keeping the Earth skies clear.

The end of the month just passed giving my troops one more small Psi-Strength boost.

It's time.
Now playing: (Do we really have to spoiler tag a 16 year old game?) by Muse

I will turn the Red Sands into a technicolor carpet. Death to the Alien.
, the mutant, the heretic.
and whatnot

Im starting a play through of TFTD, which I think im going to start a Lets Play: TFTD thread.

Superhuman with no armor. And GAF tells me what to research etc.

It's April now and 2nd Terror Attack within the same month, night mission.. Not good.

Anyway 4 months passed and I only lost 3 rookies, researched Heavy Plasma and Plasma Rifle, if I get good funding I'll install 5 Plasma Defenses on main base.. Before year ends I want to install 1 more base in America. My current base in Turkey covers Europe, West Asia and North Africa just fine.

ohhh...tempted to buy off of d2d for $4.95. you think steam will price match? going through this thread makes me want to replay the games again! I always ended up giving up before. These are tough games!

There was a Steam sale at the end of January where all five games could have been yours for only $2. It might be a while until they decide to have it on sale again.

Wow... anytime i get passed like 6 planes the micromanagement kills me... I can't deal with building 6+ hangars..... but i guess i've never tried.... I'm a person that once i reach a certain strength in my game... i dont like to go on crashed ship missions any more :( but i guess thats my downfall right?

Anyways I gave up Ironman rules a couple nights ago lol ... had to reload after I lost an Avenger with EVERYONE on it lol... soo ya...i lose ...

I can kind of relate to that methane47, I definitely enjoy the beginning of the game the most. I don't think theres any harm in not going on UFO recoveries later unless you need the resources.

I've managed to fix my resource issues in my game, managed to recover quite a few medium ufo's and got lucky and caught a couple of battleships on the ground so now I have loads of elerium, alloys and six bases with good radar coverage of the globe. I did fail to take the commander of either battleship alive unfortunately. I always struggle with commander captures, especially on superhuman. I also haven't found a single alien base yet which is unusual.

I never go on crash shipped missions if I can help it. Bad for business. It's too much effort for not enough reward (mainly Elerium.) When I don't want to deal with a ship I kill it over water. Avengers have a huge range so it's easier to intercept over an ocean with plasma beams.

I normally don't bother dealing with Battleships at all unless they land. I don't like the downtime repairing damage to my craft.

Noo, get it away! Back in the day I enjoyed it but I don't think I really like TFTD that much anymore. Theres just way too much unfair bullshit in that game. Maybe I should give it another try soon.

Me too.
Once you gain access to all the most advanced weaponry, you just have to wait until your soldiers receive enough training in PSI labs. You don't have any reason to recover crashed UFOs, 'cause there are so many of them that you just crash them down and you still get excellent ratings even if you leave the very large ones alone and even if you fail terror missions.

I had no problem getting $25M (I don't even have to sell alien artifacts to get the money) and I'm now waiting to embark for Cydonia: too bad I have 1 UFO sighting a day, thus months are really really long. What's worse is that all those UFOs are small (very small, even) or very large (and they never land): I need elerium!!!

Agreed, it's the reason why I've only properly finished the game a few times, I usually lose interest when it comes to the endgame. I also love the challenge of making the most out of limited equipment and resources at the beginning and how every mission/research branch you go on is important. Once you've got everything in place it starts to feel like a bit of a grind. Still one of the best games of all time though :D

No doubt about it.
I'm a little bored, yeah, but I've finished the game many times in the past, so there's nothing really "new" for me to find. Back in the day (when I played for the first time) those dull moments weren't there.
X-Com is so easy to play, yet deep enough to keep you playing all night long.
It's amazing that it's still playable and fun and "fresh" after all these years. Only true masterpieces can stand the test of time, and UFO is one of those.
