Chris (#1): C

Not NEARLY as entertaining as the previous performances. Shaky vocals all over the place and he was in the same key for nearly the entire song. Nothing was rousing about it; it stayed in once place and didn't move.
 
Ok, so here's my thing with Chris Rene:

Yes, his live performances are terrible. God awful, even.

BUT, with his unique delivery, and with STUDIO polish, I have to admit that he has the most "current" sound of any of the contestants. Put him in the studio with someone like Danja or Bangladesh, and I can easily see him putting out something hot.

So I hate him, but I can see him EASILY having the most successful Top 40 career out of anyone left on the show.
 
Melanie is not nearly as impressive as everyone thinks she is. Her voice is a lot more limited than these songs she picks require.
 
Bleh, you guys are drinking the Kool-Aid. She's above average, but hearing her name in the same sentence as Mariah or Whitney...no fucking way.
 
Melanie reminds me of Syesha (from AI6) except with a personality. They both have impressive range and emote well, but are rather indistinct among a sea of more capable divas.

And is Simon styling her personally now? I can't help but notice.

I agree with that, but I'll say with performances like that she's on her way. The problem I've had with her ballads up until tonight was that she was just not connecting with them. She sang them competently and that's it. She really connected tonight.

Well of course she's no Whitney or Mariah, but she's one of few that doesn't turn their songs into amateur, karaoke trash. She (usually) manages to sing Whitney competently and avoids the comparisons because she can make it her own (like Paula would say).
 
Best performance from Marcus. I can't even hate on that. He just needs to watch it when he goes high, because he tends to get a little screechy and starts sounding like the old man in a Baptist church choir.

EDIT: But yes, my husband did sing it better. Thank you guys for noticing, I'll pass along your comments to him.

Very passionate, poised performance. He killed it. People say he's a cheesy Usher, but I've seen him mess this song up because of his limited vocal abilities. Marcus was wonderful.
 
I just got home, and the first thing that graces my TV is Nicole's wisdom.

I hate this night already.


Edit: did my gerls Melanie and Josh slay everyone in their first song?

Yep, he actually redeemed himself tonight. I imagine Drew would've been a disaster in her first performance, so maybe it's better we were all spared her doing an uptempo number.

Started a pitchy mess and ended a pitchy mess. Really cancelled out her great first performance. I'm back to hating her.
 
Rachael (#2): C+

This was her Save Me song? @_@ OK. Well, the song had a nice pick up in the middle, but it wasn't MUCH of a pick up. The beginning was a bit boring for me (and she was flat at times). I'm not buying the "old soul" critique, either.
 
Josh:

Complete turn-around from his first performance. He killed it. Just killed it. That growl of his...I tell you...

EDIT: "Krajcik Magic"??? Nicole...Have SEVERAL seats...
 
Josh (#2): A

He and Melanie have perfect pitch, and I really appreciate that. It's like their voices grab on to notes and never let go. But anyway, great performance. He was definitely more in his element for his final song. And like Simon said: what made his performance even greater was that it was just HIM. No dancers, no flashing lights....just Josh and the mic.
 
Josh's voice is so full and alive. A+

It's sad that Leroy could've been as great if he didn't smoke a pack a day from the day he was born.

Oh, and shut up Nicole.
 
My wife and I were just talking about this. I think we have 2 great voices in Melanie and Josh and then 3 who fall more into the entertainer category. It will be interesting to see which way America goes with the voting.
 
Honestly, if it's anyone but Josh and Melanie in the final, there is no justice. Josh or Melanie versus any of the other clowns would be the worst final anything since Jordin Sparks vs. Blake

I think Josh has a great voice but sadly he doesn't have the pretty factor that will make him a star. It's a sad reality that this is how life works.
 
I'm going to use this inevitably terrible performance to salvage the pizza I put at half the required temperature. Damn these celsius and fahrenheit changes, they confuse me.
 
The song was hella repetitive, but the stripped back performance might be the best thing he's done on the live shows. Surprised the hell out of me. He definitely proved why he has the most radio potential out of anyone left.

He was also the most charming he's ever been singing it.

Guys...I think Chris might make it to the finals off of that.
 
Chris (#2): B+

Not bad. Even with Chris, it's nice when the performances are stripped down and we get to hear vocals without all of the extra mess. It kinda reminded me of Kris Allen's rendition of "Heartless" back on American Idol (but Kris was 100x better). It was a nice surprise....I thought he was going to suck. :)
