Xander? perfect just perfect.
OMG the Glasses LMFAO. But the guy is pissing me off. Too full of himself even though some of the stuff he said was hilarious.

Oh my God, I can't

Alexan...I meant Xan...fuck it. Alexander did that to himself. He was very rude to all 4 judges. Fix the attitude and maybe you will get in and selected next time.

It really was a terrible episode. Even if Miami was chock full of crap, they had a 1ish minute montage of good singers. Should've shown each of the singers in that montage individually instead of giving us yet another nutcase.

I don't see tonight's ratings improving from yesterday.

poor lady in black completely janked that first clap. That shit was almost as amazing as the singing.
Well, Kelly's completely overshadowed the whole judging table and become the de facto HBIC. Poor girl's gotta do something to stand out.

The problem for Simon is that American Idol was so enormously successful that it ended up spawning a lot of vague copycats that X Factor has to contend with.

I wonder if Idol will stick to the more intimate audition format or go big like X-Factor. I sort of prefer the AI format - the backing track masked a crapload of flaws for singers like the Elvis/Michael Jackson wannabe from the beginning and the soft-voiced blonde chick near the end. Plus the crowd is essentially useless compared to the rowdy, vocal hooligans you see on the British show.

Rugby girl was the only highlight for me tonight. She's sporty, beautiful and has a great voice. And...I hate using this phrase, but......dat asssss.

The dilemma with both American Idol and X-Factor during the audition stages is that the shows have an identity crisis. They want to parade a bunch of tone-deaf freaks on stage in between all of the people with genuine talent and it just kills any flow to the show... especially when they bury most of the people who can actually sing in one-minute montages or... worse yet... exclude them altogether.

It's hard to take the show seriously. And while American Idol may be able to get away with it due to being an established brand in North America, X-Factor should have lived up to its $5 million billing and left all that shit on the cutting room floor.

No comedy acts. No contrived promo packages. Just showcase the talent.

The show does have a couple things going for it. Three of the four judges are pretty darn good. Nicole's a waste right now but perhaps she'll grow into the role over time instead of acting 10 years younger than her age. Cowell, Paula and L.A. are all better than any of the AI judges... with the possible exception of J-Lo when she's not feigning tears. Randy Jackson is well past his expiration date and needs to be sent out to pasture with WWE's Jerry Lawler. Steven Tyler is well... Steven Tyler. It would be silly to expect him to be anything else.

The real problem for X-Factor is Steve Jones. He's a complete and total dud right now. Nothing but vapid eye candy devoid of any personality when it comes to interacting with the contestants or the TV audience. When even phony suckup ex-Canadian Idol host Ben Mulroney puts you to shame, you've got a serious problem.

That's the problem. X Factor isn't actually a singing contest, showcasing talent - it's a camp, over the top ridiculous, overproduced show that whips people in to its little world. It's not like The Voice. X Factor pretends it's a serious contest but it's done in a way that slightly undermines itself.

When it does the boombastic text on screen IT'S TIME TO FACE THE MUSIC, that's supposed to be read out by a voiceover man with a certain degree of ridiculousness despite the epicness it tries to portray.

The rubbish participants from the auditions come back to sing as a group for pointing and laughing at the end.

Louis Walsh is a judge.

The show's finalists included Wagner and Jedward. Entertaining, maybe, but not the high class of British vocal talent.

I agree with everything else you said, but this: is it fair to be calling Steve Jones a dud this early? The audition format of X Factor makes his role as host almost an afterthought. I'd say the live show will be the deciding factor on whether he's any good or not.

Not that I have a credible opinion on this matter, I'm content just by looking at him. :>

ALSO: how long is Nicole's contract? Praying her ass gets replaced by Mariah Carey next year (if there is a next year).

I gave this show a good fighting chance, but this is enough for me. Awful contestants, awful manufactured drama, everything feels fake as shit, and Nicole is just too stupid to bear.

Fucking thing sucks.

I think it's perfectly fair because it doesn't have to be an afterthought. Seacrest engages the contestants, their families and the TV audience during the audition phase of Idol and has actual conversations with them.

With Steve we get drab monotonal voiceover and only see him standing alongside family members watching monitors and smiling cheesily. His only connection with the contestants comes in the form of reluctant hugs as they return from the stage or an insincere exclamation of "good luck" as they're about to audition. The few times we see him talking to the TV audience directly he comes across like some field correspondent. I don't even get the impression he's happy to be there.

Granted, the live shows will provide him with more opportunity to showcase his skills but nothing I've seen thus far leads me to believe there's a dynamic personality waiting to reveal itself.

watched a bit of the episode today while eating dinner and thought it was pretty lame

what was with the ghost thing and having crew members shut the studio lights and having the judges pretend like they were confused, wasn't even a little bit funny

I watched some of the first episode as it was on last night, but man, you americans can get over excited over some things. Here we cheer, maybe stand up, but you guys go all rolling around and running around screaming

I was really hoping they would kinda get rid of Louis this year with the new judges, but at the same time I was over the moon to see Dannii go, for some reason I really didn't like her.

I'm guessing you guys liked Cheryl because she's sexy, right? Let's not pretend she has more personality than Nicole. She was awkward on the panel. On the UK X Factor, she usually has nothing to say.

It's funny, when Nicole was a guest judge on our X Factor, I thought she was a breath of fresh air and livened up the show.

Go on YouTube and watch videos of Wagner and Jedward. The X-Factor has always been more about the judges rivalry, overblown spectacle and manufactured drama than talent, no matter what they say.

Yep, I'm done. I hate everything about it.

Someone I know was in the audience a few years back and said that the people they show in the episodes are the only people actually 'auditioning', the crowds of people during the intros are mostly the audience. They've all already gone through an auditioning process to see if they're funny/good enough to be on the show, the only real part is the judges reactions, yet they're all obviously played up for the cameras.

I don't know if the US version does it, but this series of the UK version shows the 'good' people getting ready in the morning and on their way to the audition. That alone shows how planned out it all is.

Yep. And the people now no nothing of subtlety. They make it so obvious they were asked on the show as a dare or w/e.

I miss the people that you could sort of tell they have a voice but are still terrible, yet they think they're good. I remember there was one lady from a few years ago that looked right dirty. Started swearing and Sharon cause she couldn't believe they thought she was bad.

I'm confused how this show is supposed to be worse than American Idol.

I mean, it has Simon Cowell, and the audience is better than no audience.

Not for auditions.

Wow, someone can't sing. Let's invite ten thousand people and set up a giant stadium so we can see him not sing well on a giant stage

That's a good thing. Means they get embarrassed and get booed.

How is them doing it in a small room with no one else around better?

god rachel crow had me laughing my ass of.

I was all set to hate that dude, but his song is a number 1 hit if they release it as is. Totally won me over.

What happened to Cheryl? She was awesome. I can't take Paula and Nicole.

Having watched her 3 stints on the UK XFactor, she really isn't. Probably the best thing for her that America only got to see her trying her hardest to make a good impression, she might be able to make something of that. If she'd gone the way of the UK version she would have soon shown just how vapid and self-interested she really is.

Haven't seen the show, but after reading your post saw Chris Rene's audition. Now that is real talent, wrote the song, composed the music and sang it fine.

Same.

The ratings that were less than half of idols last season make me happy. Nice flop Cowell.
It's not a flop yet. Its Thursday ratings (4.3) were better than the Wednesday results (4.1). Viewership usually plunges after a pilot or holds slightly steady, so any sign of growth is going to make FOX happy for now.

If we get a Jedward this season, the show will be in trouble. I don't think American audiences (the Jersey Shore crowd aside) would feel they're in on the joke (because it's not funny at all after one week let alone six), plus it diminishes the magnitude of the $5 million prize. This show needs a legitimate star in its first season like Kelly Clarkson to carry any legitimacy moving forward.

Well I think the problem is that Idol premieres in January when there's literally nothing new on, but XF is competing with the season premieres of multiple established shows.

This. I don't know if Idol realizes how much they owe to Kelly. She was like the best possible winner for the first season of a singing contest. As much as I would dislike it, they could manage having a joke act like Jedward, since idol survived Sanjaya.

edit: Although, I do think Norman Gentle was the moment when Idol jumped the shark.
