Ep1 Impressions

I'm back! I'm..... kinda.... speechless.

Where do I start? This is not only not a bad first episode, but it's probably one of the stronger first episodes I've seen from most series this year.

There are several things which are pretty outstanding about this X-Men anime.

First and foremost, the backgrounds are gorgeous. The art director was definitely given time and resources to really design the various sets and locations. It's pretty much OVA quality backgrounds all over the place. Detailed and attractive.

Next is the animation. Now this isn't like, the most amazing animation ever or something, but it's good stuff. You can tell that the animators really bothered with each frame to detail the characters and really flesh out the art. This is something completely absent from Iron Man and Wolverine. There are details on the faces and clothing, subtle movements in the air and as they move, detailed shading and shadows to create a sense of depth, etc. In other words, it looks like a real anime, like you would expect a normal action anime with a reasonable budget to look.

Then there's the actual directing. It's interesting to see that after two duds, we're finally looking at a Marvel Anime episode which feels like it's actually being directed with a vision and purpose instead of being thrown together. The episode opens with the climax of their version of the Dark Phoenix storyline, with the death of Jean Grey. It's an action packed sequence which shows off a good sense of dynamic action and exciting flow.

Then after the opening, it continues a year later, with the main members of the X-Men split up doing their own things, until they are summoned together by Professor X. There's a real sense of the show building up the various characters properly, showing off their talents and powers, as well as their personalities and interests. There is also proper foreshadowing and well, let's just say, competent narrative plotting.

It's really weird to be saying all this, because a lot of this is what you would expect from any decent television show to begin with, but after Iron Man and Wolverine, it's so odd to actually see them bother to try and do at least ONE series properly. This is definitely a case of having super low expectations based on the last two shows, and being surprised by something which is actually....... normal and slightly above average.

Shocking.

Iron Man and Wolverine were fucking awful, Wolverine had some unintential hilarity too it though.

I thought the first episode of the x-men anime was pretty good, better then the first episode of the wolverine anime.

Yesssss. More soldiers for my army!

None of you will be disappointed. :)

Oh, I am a big X-men and Marvel fan. I was going to watch it anyway. Haven't seen wolverine after about the 2nd episode but Emma makes everything better (except First class, have a bad feeling that is going to suck balls)

There's like nothing out, so no one knows for sure.

X-men is duckroll-approved, though.

I dunno, duckroll is a bit on the unbalanced side...

But if it is the only thing out thus far, I will give it a try I guess.

The combination of duckroll's desperation (or is it trickery?) and nostalgia for the old cartoon is making me pretty excited for X-Men. It's too bad it's not in English yet...

Besides, dat storm.

I'm curious what Duckroll does when there's no Ponies or Madoka. Myself too for that matter...

X-men

So cheesy lol. I watched it without subs, but I'm pretty sure I understood all of it because I've heard 90% of those lines before. It looks pretty nice and I did enjoy the first episode, but I don't think I'll watch anymore. I haven't seen any of the other marvel anime, but it wasn't really bad as I was expecting it to be.

I don't understand why anyone would think I would lie about X-Men being good. It's not like I have any problems admitting that I watch Marvel Anime even when it is -awful-. Lol.

Maybe there's just a general air of distrust in this thread when it comes to anyone saying that a new show is good, especially when the last two Marvel adaptations where awful.

Although I never thought you werez lyin'

Problably, the preview looked fine; I was actually surprised Cyclops motorcycle wasn't CG!

Exactly! Not only is his bike not CG, but there are missile trails, and even the enemy mech is hand drawn. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

you fiend, now look, you got me all excited to watch this now(also for storm)

*now waiting for sub*

X-Men 1
Nothing offensively bad at all. I'm shocked. Pretty standard for a first episode, but it kept me interested enough to want to see the next episode. Storm was delicious as well.

So guys, you know why the backgrounds in X-Men rock so much?

Shigemi Ikeda, the art director, runs his own art production studio - Atelier Musa. They worked on the director's previous works Basilisk and Afro Samurai, but more importantly, they are currently working on Gundam Unicorn. :P

They have a pretty sweet sample history of all the stuff they've worked on in the past: http://www18.ocn.ne.jp/~musa/gallery.html

X-men - 1
I still maintain and standby my comment they dumped the animation budgets of Iron Man and Wolverine here. Probably has the more competent staff too considering the art and direction alone compared to the former 2. Madhouse redeemed :lol

Wolverine's suit in the beginning reminds me of Hawkeye's. And Scott is such a bishounen.

Edit: Only criticisms I have of this are Tetsuya Takahashi (ugh), and Xavier's VA was a wrong choice.
