I picked up the PS2 version of this game because of the recommendation of several GAF members. I searched for an official thread, but couldn't find one.
So far the game is what I expected. It is an entertaining Diablo-clone, very similar to the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series. I'm only about an hour into the game, but the enemy progression seems reasonably balanced. There are too many health items early on, but they appear to be getting more infrequent. From what little I've played, the core gameplay is solid enough.
The character-switching is a bit awkward. I expected there to be more puzzles relying on the different mutants' abilities, but so far only Storm and Magneto have been used, and even they are only useful for one type of puzzle (build a bridge with Magneto! Put out a fire with Storm!). I'm not convinced that the 4 character switching is necessary, and managing the four characters is annoying. There is an automatic feature, but it only adds points to one attribute and doesn't spread them around (Wolverine always gets strike points, for example). The menus themselves are clunky, and it is sometimes difficult to figure out which skills you can upgrade. Assigning skills is also confusing at first.
Visually the game is decent. The framerate drops too much, but most of the time it isn't a big deal. Early in the game there is a glaring discrepency, as the cell-shaded game graphics switch to an AWFUL traditional 3D cutscene. The music is really good, and the voice acting isn't bad.
It's too early for me to judge the game, but I'm optimistic. It has some goofy flaws, but the gameplay is still fun. Also, the 4-player online co-op mode sounds like great fun, so I'll have to try that sometime.
What do other people think about this game? How does it compare to other Diablo-style games on the consoles?
