X360 Battery Pack kits pic

E3 2005 was the occasion to learn some a little more on the battery equipping the new Wireless levers with Xbox 360. Indeed, Microsoft intends to market two types of accessory allowing to reload battery AA of the pads, namely: Play & Charges Kit and Refillable Battery Pack. The first consists of a cable connecting between its pad Wireless and its console thus making it possible to reload its battery while playing, very useful when your battery arrives at court of autonomy in full part. The second will include/understand a system of recharging for batteries connecting directly on a socket-outlet. Let us recall that the Wireless lever of Xbox 360 has a range of 10 meters and a 40 hour endurance.

I don't get the point of the wired option that allows you to charge by plugging in the controller. It will only charge while the system is on...which seems pretty worthless.

So you can keep playing while it charges.

What I don't get is why you would even need that second thing if you can just recharge by using the cable.

i wonder how long it would take to charge w/ the corded option... b/c it seems like if it connects to usb you could charge it using your comps USB ports like how a lot of iPods charge....

Hmmm i wonder if my apple usb power adapter charger will work to charge my microsoft controllers

Ya, but then what's the point of it being wireless if I have to game with it as wired 30% of the time? It would have been much smarter for MS to allow a standby mode for X360 which kept the USB ports hot. They went against this because in the EU this is against the law or something.. (to have a stand-by mode).

MS is gonna nick and dime everyone on accessories :lol.

They learned from Sony :) Memory Cards $30. useless stands for your system $15. Just expect $39 "Limited Edition" faceplates.

You dont HAVE to charge the pack using the cable.

A PlayStation 2 stays on all the time (assuming you're not one of those morons that turns off the main power switch in the back all the time). Imagine the Xbox 360 is on all the time so it can charge the controllers over USB 2.0 even if the system isn't "on" playing games.

Nevermind :(

The batteries are standard AA so you can charge them with a normal charger, there is no need to buy these accesories (if you own a charger, that's it)

The dedicated charger device does a fast charge of the pack to full capacity while trickle-charging it takes longer.

You dont HAVE to charge the pack using the cable.
My point is it would be much more useful to be able to just charge your controllers while not playing via the cable, then when it came time to play, disconnect and go.

Functionality aside for a second, I really like the unified aesthetic theming of the 360 and these accessories. White with a hint of green looks really nice.

I would have to respectfully disagree.

No, it's not, unfortunately.

You're spouting your lies... again.

It goes into a "sleep" mode. Care to explain how when you get an invite on xbox live your system/controller lights start flashing when it's apparently "OFF"?

Cool.

it has to go into a sleep mode, for the controllers to work as remotes to turn on the system as well. There has to be some power applied to accept the signal.

Well those sort of function are like ATX "wake-on" modes. The example i described was the fact it was maintaining a connection to xbox live.

I have a charger for my Blackberry which accept USB as the standard plug with which to charge it...it should work via that as well I'd imagine.

Do you have a link to where they said this.

is that the same EU law that stops my TV having standby, or my Tivo, or sky box, or amp, or PC, or cooker?

Load of nonsense, unless they just introduced a law against USB trickle voltage passthrough dongle blah blah (which I wouldn't be surprised at if they ban bananas that are too bendy)

So wait, the controller is wireless standard and needs recharging but it WON'T come with at least a cable for those of us who don't mind playing with wires?

Is this correct?

Pretty fucking lame if so.

The batter lasts 40 hours, so have it wired 30% of the time it would have to take 12 hours to charge. I'm no expert in typical battery charge periods, but that strikes me as a long time.

stuff i hook up to usb keeps charging after my comp goes off... unless computers in EU are different i completely expect that behavior from the 360

Couldn't you just stick the battery in the charging deck (seen above) and let it charge there for playing next time? It's not that big on an issue, but it'd be nice if you could connect up the controller to the system while it's off and have it charge.

Er it uses AA batteries, if you have rechargeable AA batteries and a recharger, you don't need these accessories. It's for peeps who don't.

God...

Alright, there are a lot of different angles going on here, and people are reusing the same terminology to try to say different things. Let's make a more formal list and then have people correct it.

Here's my semi-understanding from reading through this thread:

1. Xbox 360 controllers will have a couple (2?) rechargable AA batteries in the big white hump in the back as opposed to a LiOn(?). And they are removable(?)
2. A short little USB cable, included with each controller (?) will be able to charge the controller's battery pack when plugged into one of the console's USB ports.
3. When using that short little USB cable to charge the battery pack, the controller is not usable. (or is it just that it's usable, but you'd have no practical way of playing because of how short it is?)
4. This cable we just saw a picture of is really a normal USB cable that just happens to be long enough to play with; and it uses one of the standard USB ports (or does it use the single Xbox controller port?)
5. This plug-in adapter charges the controller's battery pack by plugging it into an AC outlet and attaching the a)controller b)battery pack or c)AA batteries in the pack to the unit (?)

From my understanding the rechargeable batteries and charger cable/outlet adapter won't be included with the controller.

So out the gate it just comes with two fucking double A's?

Way to solve the wireless dilemma, Microsoft.

So what's the AC charger thing--is that a LiOn pack charging on an AC? (it looks like two of the battery packs themselves connected to it--too thin to be holding AAs like the text describes)

God...

This will probably be the easiest and cheapest way to go about this.
