You were expecting Microsoft to hand these out via the kindness of their heart? They're obviously in the business of trying to make profit, and this is just another accessory to sell. You don't have to buy a skin for the console to turn on out of the box. So...what's "mean" about it?

Why care too much about the design of the new console?
Let's create various 'faceplates' which the consumer can buy and will buy more than once!
So, MS doesn't have a problem with finding a design which is satisfying for all AND they make some "Micropayments (TM)" out of this too.

Just because I'm coming down on the idea, and others like it - doesn't mean that I am personally insulting them.
Personally I'll take this over Microsoft re-releasing the system in five new, hip colours every year. As for the price...well, hey, loads of people proved they don't mind buying the same system or controllers two or three times over just to have new colours...just ask Nintendo. When it comes down to a choice between a $300 system that happens to be green instead of white, or a $10 faceplate...I choose the faceplate.
