Once again, as for all 2K Sports games presented yesterday and today... ALPHA HARDWARE ! The guy presenting the game explained a lot of stuff about the lighting, shadowing and ice reflection, but could not show it because it was not implemented yet...

I seriously hope that person in the purple is just a place holder. After seeing the crowd from this and Tiger Woods, it makes me concerned. I couldn't help but noticing all the same guys in yellow shirts in Dead Rising either. I'm hoping they at least solve this problem. It's like the quality in the crowds hasn't changed since the N64 days. =P

Edit: I do like the fact that when the crowd is turned they aren't flat pieces of paper :)

3d crowd = nice (hey, blocky 3d with animations still better than 3 frame 2d cutouts)

I hope they use higher detail models when close up to the rink, and they aren't compromised because of the crowd.

It's basically a port of the Xbox game, with better arenas and more effects.

And yet it's still going to be the best sports game of 2005! :D

... They really shouldn't bother showing anything but target renders... all these 'alpha kit' shots are just making the console look worse and worse.

Meanwhile, people will be telling their friends to hold back until the PS3 rocks around, and MS will have lost any advantage to releasing early.

Well that's because as I said, they are from the Xbox version's "detailed crowd" that looked like this:

A lot of 2K fans weren't happy with the 3D crowds. Compare 2K4's 2D crowd:

espnx_screen018.jpg

To the 3D crowd of 2K5:

920674_20040803_screen002.jpg

It did look ok from a distance:

But animation was another issue. The 2D crowd had great varied animation. People would be drinking beer, jumping up and down, waving, etc.

The fact that it's a rush job is a bit dissappointing, but NHL 2K3 was the same way...and it still turned out to be the best hockey game that year. It looked like a slightly modified Dreamcast game (which it was, really).

So um, I can't imagine artists going to the trouble of creating all new models for beta kits (they take a lot of time/resources?), does that mean most first-gen X360 games will have pretty poor models?
Because most but not all games which have been shown on alpha kits have horrible models (as well as near everything else).

No...games that are being ported from the Xbox/PC to the 360 (like NHL 2k6, Kameo, PD0, Tiger Woods, NFS) will be the ones that look the weakest.

Games made for the 360 from the ground up will look fine for the most part.

Yeah, these are alpha shots, FSAA isn't even there, and you know it will be. It's pretty ambitious to go for rendering full 3D crowds. Sure, the animations and textures might start out basic, but every year more animations and improvements will happen and it'll look georgous.

Far as how the game will look with the final hardware, I don't expect a large improvement, the alpha kits are going to basically hamper all the launch window games. Basically take these graphics, add in a couple of the missing graphical features and a steady 60fps framerate.

same port from X360 or totally new engine aka ps1 to ps

Why are there sellout crowds in Anaheim and New-Jersey? Where's the realism? :)

Oh and is there a egg-throwing mini game with Bob Goodenow?

Come on BB. You do not need to keep saying that. ;)

Ditto. Developers should stop releasing screenshots of games still being developed on alpha hardware; if their intention is to create hype it isn't working.

If I didn't know better I'd say there's no anisotropic filtering in that pic .

2k5 had some hilariously bad crowd animations on the Xbox. If they're not up to making a decent crowd they really shouldn't draw attention to the crowd with shitty cutscenes and animation.

Just curious.... wouldnt any NHL game just be and empty arena and and empty ice rink?

As it stands, looks pretty damn good to me. Just like anything lately you can't rely on screenshots, they just don't translate.

Is that a shitty lockout joke? The lockout is going to be over in a matter of days.

Thats denial if I've ever heard it....

It's ok, Hockey may come back someday, at least I hope so. I like to watch the occasional NHL game now and then.
This si one lockout where I do agree with the owners though... hell has indeed frozen over.

You should watch the news before saying someone is in denial. The lockout will indeed be over in a couple of days (maybe even hours). Way too many reliable source are reporting the same thing, it's not a mistake

The only things I see (ESPN.com), is about a new CBA being presented, any word if it has actually been agreed upon by the NHLPA?

If so it seems the owners have done a pretty good job of all but crushing the union. I'm all for them returning, but they only have one shot to get this right. It's going to be a lot harder for the NHL to come back than it was for MLB to come back after their labbor dispute.

Especially considerng the NHL has never been huge deal to the American fans. Ironic, being that all the teams are mostly in the US.

:lol

Looks pretty meh to me,but it's hockey so I could care less.Honestly do not see the appeal of hockey videogames, even if I was a fan,the game's are pure fuckin luck.

I know you're joking, but I really want variable crowds. Half empty arenas for pre-season games, people getting up and walking around the arena, vendors, people leaving the game during a blowout. That'd be so awesome.

If you let the CPU controll the goalie, yes.

I only played it in the GAF league online, not even sure if that option was available, anyways I've never watched a game of hockey in my life and I was like 9-1 before the season died, just sayin that I didn't find the game to require any true skill or knowledge of the sport.

Well, going to ESPN was your first mistake.

They could've announced the deal a month ago, but they're staying silent until everything is on paper and ready to be ratified. They've been having like 10 hour+ meetings for a month solid.

Even the most jaded and pessimistic person recognizes that it is not a matter of if the lockout ends, but when.

The LA Times today is reporting a deal in priciple has been reached.

So you can quit the whole jaded act now.

I can say the same thing about basketball. I don't claim to be the most versed in the sport. My interest in the sport is mild, yet I won a local tourny in NBA 2k5 when the game was first released. Was it pure dumb luck that Ray Allen was able to drain 3 after 3 to lead my team to victory? And to say hockey requires no skill, you obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Next time, refrain from speaking on things in which you have no knowledge of.

Never go to ESPN.com for hockey news. I suggest hitting up their Canadian sister site, TSN.ca for info. And I wouldn't put too much weight into the LATimes article, as it's extremely inaccurate (according to the always reliable Bob McKenzie at TSN). We're approaching the end of this lockout, and I personally can't wait for hockey season. My Sabres should ice a decent squad next season.

Another thing Outcast, you seriously under rate hockey fans as they are some of the most hard core fans you can find. The league will be just fine. It'll take a hit for a few seasons, but it wouldnt' be long before it gets back on it's feet. The game can only grow from this point on.

Oh I don't question their loyalty in the least, it's the AMOUNT that I question. Is it going to be enough to even bother with?

Hockey as a whole get shit for ratings and we all know in any sport its all about the TV revenue. I hope I'm proven wrong and hockey actually makes a nice dent into the big 3 sports and thrives.

But hockey's rating have tanked the past few years, sometimes so bad that the games were shown on tape delay.

Everyone knows hockey in person is better than the TV experience. I agree, hockey isn't a TV friendly sport. It's somewhat hard to see the puck sometimes and you can't see plays developed etc... When the NHL comes back, they're going to try to improve their game on the ice to make it more exciting. They are also hoping that HDTV grows in the US because (apparently) hockey on HDTV is very good. Even with a shitty TV deal, the NHL still makes 2.5 Billion dollars a year. The NBA doesn't make that much more and they have a large TV contract....

I think you have to factor in how poorly ESPN, Fox, and ABC presented the NHL to the public. Their coverage was horrible, and that may be an understatement. There was barely any advertisement of the games, and they continuously shoved the Rangers, Flyers, and Red Wings down the U.S. hockey fan's throat. The Rangers got more exposure than any other team (sans Red Wings perhaps) and they were absolutely brutal the 2003-2004 season. No one, especially hockey fans, is interested in watching an absolutely awful hockey club.

They should have focused on the teams that were exciting to watch, for example the Tampa Bay Lightning. Instead they choose teams with the larger viewership, such as the Rangers. That doesn't always equate to good ratings. The NHL's partnership with ESPN wasn't a good one, and I'm hoping they seek out a network that is willing to give the sport the proper treatment it deserves. TNT has expressed interest, and they do an excellent job with the NBA (Look at TNT's NBA ratings in comparison to ESPN's). The emergence of HDTV should certainly help the NHL's cause.

The NHL themselves are partially to blame in this as well. They don't promote the players enough. Put Jeremy Roenick in the spotlight, the guy seems to charish it. He's an interesting personally, something the NHL seems to be lacking. And pimp off Jarome Iginla...show the general public that hockey is a game that can be played by all races.
