Hey all,

So in my travels this weekend I came across a Microsoft employee and talked him up about Xbox II... here are the facts I found out.

1) Hard Drive... Yes! There was some speculation that MS was going to take the HD out to make it more difficult to Mod.

2) Flash based HD... Yes!!! It was told to me that the HD was going to be flash based... small size fast access... BAM!

3) No Stupid Dongle DVD playback... Yes!!! The reason that the first Xbox didn't have built in DVD playback is a simple one, Sony owns the Intellectual Property rights for DVD playback. Nuf said...

4) Xbox II at E3... Hell Yes!!! There will be an Xbox II maybe more at E3 this year...

5) Xbox II release date announced at E3... another Hell Yes!!! MS will be announcing a release date for Xbox II...

Now this is not like the "rumors" about IBM before these are hard cold facts from the horses mouth...

"Came across a microsoft employee"

ROFL

he's full of it.

also, if X2 ships with "just" DVD support, ms is going to look foolish. they need to bite the bullet and include HD-DVD.

Wow, you think?

It's always about this time, pre-nextgen, that lots of "sources" suddenly emerge..*yawn*

XBOX II at E3? AMAZING!? What a wild unknown here, folks!

Seriously, Engadget posted this story earlier in the day and were just as skeptical about it. Take this one with a MAJOR grain of salt.

My friend who works for Toys R US says that Super Mario Bros. 18 is out in Japan, and that Nintendo's new hardware will make pancakes.

Nintendo intimated recently that their next system would have the revolutionary ability to play audio compact discs, a first for a Nintendo system.

I thought the reason for excluding of DVD movie playback was to avoid some kind of tarrif.
DVD6C plus Philips, Pioneer, and Sony stake claims to DVD patents. IIRC, you have to license DVD-related patents from all of them if you're manufacturing a device that does DVD playback, hence some of the price for the standalone DVD Remote.

But to say that "Sony owns the Intellectual Property rights for DVD playback" is just... just... my head asplode.

Yep. You have a pay a royalty to the DVD forum, of which Sony is a member. MS didn't want to put the price on each unit, so it simply sold the dongle separately, which funds the payment to the DVD forum. AFAIK, all it does is flip a switch - the xbox has the capability built in.

It did seem odd considering they were competing with PS2 which already had DVD playback, but still.

I'd maybe expect similar about HD-DVD, unless MS are getting a kickback from the IP, keeping the costs down.

I find this comment really funny because it is widely known that Xenon is using PowerPC chips.

There really isn't any 'cold hard facts' in any of those comments.

1) Hard Drive... Yes! There was some speculation that MS was going to take the HD out to make it more difficult to Mod.
If they did take it out, it wouldn't have anything to do with MOD stuff, since the base system actutecture is a lot more difficult then the original Xbox that was begging to me modded.

2) Flash based HD... Yes!!! It was told to me that the HD was going to be flash based... small size fast access... BAM!
Well there was that announcement from M-Systems. Not really sure what is 'new' about this one. Yes, MS is exploring small factor form storage devices. No news here.

3) No Stupid Dongle DVD playback... Yes!!! The reason that the first Xbox didn't have built in DVD playback is a simple one, Sony owns the Intellectual Property rights for DVD playback. Nuf said...
Well for one, Sony doesn't 'own' the IP for DVD Playback, they are part of DVD Consortium with like 8 other companies. MS didn't include DVD playback with the Xbox because they didn't want to pay the DVD Consortium a fee for every Xbox sold. Instead they only had to pay the DVD Consortium for every DVD dongle sold, which ended up saving MS millions.

4) Xbox II at E3... Hell Yes!!! There will be an Xbox II maybe more at E3 this year...
this is news how?

5) Xbox II release date announced at E3... another Hell Yes!!! MS will be announcing a release date for Xbox II...
where else would they announce price and release?

Exactly. Not to mention how stupid it would be for MS to let this get in their way (for no good reason), or how immensely stupid it would be for Sony to block them (because it would make them a target for antitrust lawsuits).

This is me entering this thread...

"Ooh, this could be interesting!"

Click and I begin to read...

I stop... I then move my eyes to look at the poster of this thread... Junior member. I then skip the first post and begin reading everyones responses for good humor. Success!

Revolutionary, but MS countered that announcement by announcing support for tapes, for both audio and data! Old school gamers happy.

The Panasonic Q would like to say something about that...

A flash HDD is in no way, shape or form faster than disk-based HDDs. Maybe a solid-state drive is faster, but that guy said flash, and that's a load of crap. Transfer rates are garbage on those as is access time. Sad, but true. I'd like to be proven wrong on this. PEACE.

I think what's more important/interesting is wether it will include BC & HD-DVD.

ALOT of people bought X-BOX's this Christmas 'cos I think the momentum is on MS's side 'cos they have more of an American feel, they have that "better graphics than PS2" selling point to casuals and I really do think the concensus amoung newer console gamers is that MS is going to replace Sony. This isn't my personal belief's...but I overhear lot's of casual gaming conversations at work and out & about and after this Christmas I've noticed the X-BOX "momentum".

The problem is...if MS launches early where does that leave people who JUST bought the first X-BOX? That "momentum" suddenly hits a brick wall! And if it doesn't have BC or a next-generation disc format like HD-DVD then I think they're kinda going into next generation too soon with too little. But who knows?

Everyone's complaining about a flash based hard drive, but if it allows Xbox 2 to have a smaller design I'm all for it!

Still not as fast as the faster 10k RPM HDD's out now.

The average 10k HDD will do 60+ Mb/s with a burst rate of 300+ Mb/s

You really think they would even think of using a 10KRPM HDD in an XBOX2? Those things cost significantly higher than 7200RPM..

That's not the point. The point is that Pimpwerx is correct in his previous statement.

Hell, even Seagate's 7200 RPM Cheetah is faster than this fast flash based drive.

Mb != MB

In your terms

the flash drive has 360 Mb/s sustained read, 320 Mb/s sustained write and 800 Mb/s sustained r/w bursts

Brought to you by the guys at M-Systems (go there)
Except that pricing for flash HDs runs from $2,000-$40,000. :)

Most likely, what MS is sourcing from M-Systems is just some higher capacity memcards and maybe an integrated scratch RAM component.

For mass storage, there is no alternative to HDDs at the moment.

Yes, I should have been more clear, although I usually write mbit for megabit. Since you seem to think sarcasm helps you today, I'll make this clear ;)

Although this flash based drive is super fast, it still pales against the newer 10k drives.

Average read speed is 45 megabytes/second. Burst rate is 100 megabytes/second

Average read speed for a 10k RPM HDD is 60 (or more) megabytes/second. Burst rate of 300 megabytes/second.

There, happy now? I'm still right.

Haha. Sony has to pay for the rights to playback DVDs just as much as MS.

Yes, but part of the money they pay, they pay to themselves, unlike XBOX. Of course, that doesn't make the above statement any more rational..

Ahh, no wonder both of them are opting for proprietary next generation DVD drives/formats.

"Royalties"
Even if Microsoft goes with HD-DVD, they will still have to pay for the rights to play back movies.
