Xbox 2 @ MTV --> May 12, 2005

Jobber, it might as well be that WSJ mixed up their news as there was this news that Sony's E3 conference will be before Microsoft's.

That's what I was thinking because if Sony did say something, i'm sure it would've been a thread by now. I just mentioned it in this thread cause no one else did.

Because they are releasing their console at least 4-6 months later than MS, and in Japan? Probably 9-12 months later here in the US.
Makes sense. Seriously. What would they say? "Err. Wait til next year!"
Then again, it worked against Dreamcast :lol

If you were a Sony Exec and heard about the MTV unveiling wouldn't you be running around with your head cut off?

No.

I don't think Sony will, or needs to, directly respond to this now.

Well, MS is showing stuff and saying "wait six months", which is still a pretty long wait (especially when you consider the ADD-ed MTV population, one might say), so just doing some king of show-off and saying "wait, it's coming" is not what's in question. I just think there's no real, must-do reason for Sony to go first. If they have the better goods, the effect would largely be the same whether they show them off a few days before or a few days after. At least I think so.

I think that Microsoft is basically going to follow the Sony model and just outdo them at every turn, especially money-wise. You, along with others, are either doubting, discrediting, or just plain disregarding Microsoft. For the life of me, I don't understand. Maybe it is your preference that Sony stays in the lead. This isn't some cheap mom and pop knockoff company, it's fuckin Microsoft. Money makes the world go round and they sure do have a shitload. I just think they are going to follow along the same protocol like they do in just about everything else. 1st generation, throw out a product, learn ins and outs of the biz, get a feel for the industry. 2nd generation, make them bleed. That's the usual Microsoft M.O. I honestly don't see that changing. They view Sony as a threat to Windows. You think MS, you think Windows. The bread and butter of their whole operation. In any event, I may be 100% wrong about this. However, watching the way they flicked Netscape and Sun off like dirt on their shoulder, I fully believe they have the ruthless capacity to take it to whatever level they need it to be at, even when it comes to losing shitloads of money. I think that is the Microsoft we will see this generation.
Hmm, the thing is, we've been hearing this same story for the last five years, and nothing much came out of it. MS never used more of a marketing budget than either Sony or Nintendo (even if they decide to do, at one point spending more on marketing doesn't bring you much, and can even be detrimental). As a matter of fact, it can be argued that they were out-advertized by Sony on every turn, especially in Europe in Japan, where there's not even much left to argue.

You can say that it's all about to change now, but I just don't know. Seeing how they are looking to cut costs on Xbox 2 hardware wherever they possibly can, it doesn't particularily strike me that they are ready to spend more money on this new endeavour either. Yes, MS is a big juggernaut that has pushed some serious competition aside during their history, but it's also simply not true that they have dominated every market they entered - far from it, actually.

I just cant wait to see the games for next gen. Somehow I have a feeling it'll be underwhelming. Sony will probably come through on the PS3 side.

MS needs to do better but, in terms of sheer market size, they don't have to 'RULE' the Japanese market.. The European, American, and other emerging Asian markets will be more important going forward.

Does the Japanese, outside of major series, even factor much in the States or Europe anymore? I'm talking about sales wise.

and somehow i feel that even if they are the best looking games in the world, you will still profess to be underwhelmed. uh, but im sure "Sony will come through', right?

FYI: MS isn't sitting on 42 billion in cash anymore. They paid it out in dividends last year.

No. They're paying it out over the next 4 years. Afterwich they'll still be sitting on 20 bil or so :lol

MS could completely oblitorate sony and vice versa hype wise by doing a 30 second/1 minute spot before the new star wars flick. also i cant believe people are still clinging to the "if you dont succeed in japan you wont succeed" mantra. GC anyone?

Suceeding in Japan isn't as important as before. Western devs have the most clout now in Western markets. Japan is important in securing good Japanese devs (they still make a difference on a global scale)...but considering that lots of Japanese devs are working to make more Western games, it's quite telling about the dire state that the Japanese games market is in. MS could capitalize on that as time goes on, selling tons of system in Japan will make less and less of a difference to Japanese devs (as Western markets will become more important)...still, there will be some devs that value the Japanese market over everything, like SquareEnix.

I think the move is brilliant. Though I wonder how well it's going to go over with the gaming media. Do you thin they might see this as MSFT leaving them high and dry? and maybe take it personal? They could of course be very mean when it comes to review time and comparison time.

Depends on what they show. I suspect this 'sneak peak' will be the name, the case design, lots of talk about the customization hook of the system and a montange clip of games at the very end. Maybe even launch date. I would expect all the technical stuff to come at E3, along with major developer and game announcements. I'll be floored if there's any hard info in there, given all celebrity crap that will fill the rest of the 30-minutes.

nah I'll give props to whichever games look good. I'm not getting my hopes up though. With the technology going into Xbox it's not like it'll be anything more than what you'd expect out of a 2005 PC graphics card.

Don't do that again. As if bolding an entire post wasn't bad enough, you also bumped a thread for no good reason.
