New Xbox To Be Unveiled By Elijah Wood, Serenaded By Killers
04.11.2005 4:40 PM EDT

Microsoft teaming up with MTV for half-hour special on May 12.

Attention, die-hard gamers: Peel the controllers off your hands, step away from "Halo 2" and mark May 12 on your calendars, because that's when all the top-secret details of the next-generation Xbox will be unleashed.

Microsoft will team up with MTV to unveil the new video game console with a 30-minute TV special hosted by "Lord of the Rings" star (and confessed Xbox enthusiast) Elijah Wood. The show will also feature performances from the Killers, backstage interviews with athletes and celebrities, a sneak peek into the future of the online service Xbox Live, and exclusive insider footage on the making of the new game console.

Although Microsoft wouldn't confirm any details surrounding the new system, rumors circulating on the Internet have been rampant — everything from an optional hard drive to a new white color scheme.

Kathy Vrabeck, president of Activision Publishing, has said the next-generation Xbox will allow gamers unprecedented ability to customize their gaming experience, and Microsoft Corporate VP J. Allard revealed last month that an Xbox "guide" will serve as an entertainment gateway for players to instantly connect to their games and other players. A customizable play list will allow players to tailor their own music tracks to the games they play.

More than 200 titles will be developed for the new platform this year, Microsoft said. The company has sold more than 20 million Xboxes worldwide since its 2001 launch.

The MTV special will premiere in North America on May 12 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, and then globally on May 13.

Its an interesting move, but by going first they are leaving themselves open to be one-upped by sony with playstation 3.

Itll be a real challenge for Mircosoft to downplay the Playstation 3 hype train.

Attention Gaming Overlords at Sony:

It would be in your best interest to buy commercials during this Xbox show, and in said commercials, show blips (3-5 seconds, tops) of next-gen demos of beloved series such as Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Final Fantasy.

That would be the ultimate one up for Sony over Microsoft :lol . Just throw MTV a blank check so they can totally fucking own Microsoft.

That may not be possible if this show won't have any adbreaks - and as an extended commercial, it may not - and to be honest, i'm not sure if Sony really would do that even if they could. Some might view it as being slightly desperate. That's MS's show, let them have it. Sony will have other ways to get their message across.

blah blah xbot blah

It's stuff like this though that makes you wonder what the fuck Nintendo's doing. You almost forget they're there with all of this back and forth between Sony and MS.

You've no idea how funny that sounds. Most people think I'm something of a Sony fanboy (despite the avatar, which is only there because i thought it ironic, since the X360 controller images basically lost me my other avatar..long story ;))! I try to be platform agnostic, and though I hate to admit it, I am just a smidgen more excited to see PS3 than X360. So there.

Seriously Sony can bide their time. They don't need to hijack this to upset MS's applecart.

Re. the MTV article, I presume that meant 200 games are in development...not that 200 will be developed for this year..

Man if you can't stand the heat now you better stay out of kitchen... M$ is firing on all engines I don't think it would be wise to piss them off right about now. M$ isn't following the crowd anymore their taking charge and that's the way to become a leader.

In all fairness, I'm pretty platform agnostic too. I'm excited about what Nintendo is doing, many of my favorite franchises will be PS3 exlcusives, and i'm sure that MS will buy enough exclusives to force me to buy the X360.

that is a surprise really

most of the time you sound like a bitter Sony fanbot

btw, Sony "buys" exclusives too.

I'm well aware, but I'm talking about things like Nippon Ichi games, SMT games, and mecha games; things that wind up on the Playstation because of their inherent Japanese-ness.

Theyre just watching the fireworks of 2 arguably overconfident PR battles. Besides, Nintendo is going to do what they want to do regardless, nothing announced by MS or Sony will change Revolution at this point. I guess that Nintendo is confident enough to let their machine speak for itself :D

I actually had a dream like a month ago, of getting a leakedt PS3 demo, with next gen previews. Mostly music and 10 second previews took place. I trust my sub conscious and expect the same with Nexbox

It's not like MTV had any credibility to begin with, but allowing your airtime to be bought to show what is basically an infomercial is pretty pathetic.

every music video is a frikken informercial to sell cd's.

I fail to see how its any different. it just happens to be a longer ad.

Well, the music and the video arguably ARE the entertainment. So unless MTV finds a way to let us all play X360 games during this show, it's not quite the same ;)

But yeah, everyone knows MTV is really just one big promotional tool at this stage.

Compared with going after Sony with a platform which is inferior in every sense? I don't think so.

Sony should air a new commercial spot during the presentation akin to the "it's coming" type advertisements that nVidia, 3dfx and ATI use -- just use their own PR firms so it doesn't suck. Keep the PlayStation brand and PlayStation3 into the people's heads during the show and let the E3 hype finish it off.

PS. When did Allard turn into some nasty stereotype of what gaming isn't about. Looking at that fucker is freaking me out.

uh, ok. i know im gonna be pretty entertained by this show. as much as the latest video by my favorite artist.

NOO ELIJAH!! Why have you stooped down to such a low level so fast!! Going from LOTR to Sin City and then taking the acting role of a fake Xbot!? Why oh why :(

.

it will not happen people. you know MS locked down the ads for this segment, hell like has been pointed out, its a 30 minute informercial. Any ads during it are going to be about what MS wants you to see.

Nothing wrong with doing that if it is something your audience is interested in. They do it all the time for things like movie specials, why not do it for videogames as well.

MTV is getting promotion from Microsoft in the Xbox media desktop by the way, so Microsoft may not even be paying for this.

I know, but it's not quite the same as the music. Whilst a music video is promotional in that it's aimed at getting you to buy the record, it's also providing you the entirity of the experience of that product. They can't do the same with a videogames console, so this will lean more into unabashed commercial territory. I'd compare it more to those movie specials they do - definitely more promotional.

As for whether it's entertaining or not, well that might be a matter of taste ;) I doubt the style of presentation will be everyones cup of tea. Informative though? Of course. At the very least we'll see first glimpses of the console and its games, so obviously it should be of automatic interest to everyone here.

And Reggie if you want to prove you are at Nintendo to kick ass and take names.
BUY THE REST OF THE COMMERCIALS !!!!

That would be the most hilarous shit EVER

It would be better if Reggie storms into the studio and proceeds to kick everyones ass and take their names. YES INCLUDING ELIJAH >: (

Its a good move by MS, but Sony is still in the driver's seat.

MS will have to milk their headstart for all its worth and hope Sony screws up with the PS3 somehow.

Sony could always do a "PS3 Preview" special on MTV in the same manner say a week or two before the XBox 360 launches.

So, if Microsoft is doing this now, that means they have one hell of an E3 coming up, right? This reeks of extreme confidence. Also, are they keeping the inputs the same like Nintendo has done from the SNES till now. I have the HD cables hooked up and I don't want to move my big screen and other shelves to get back there to hook up new shit

I'm not Canadian, but I did have a chance (due to the nature of my job) to watch Much Music for an extended period of time. It really is a better music channel than MTV. (Which doesn't say much, does it? I'm too lazy to elaborate. :lol )

I'm not Canadian either, and I can also corroborate this. Much Music>MTV. :)

I don't think Sony "has to" do anything.

If the PS3 is what it should be, I really don't see any way for Microsoft to win.

Any shift in market leadership in this business has only come from a colossal mistake on the market leader's part (Atari and Nintendo made huge ones, infact they made several before it finally caught up to them).

As long as Sony doesn't do anything ridiculously stupid and maintains solid relations with third parties, I think they're more or less in the clear.

That might piss off some people, but really I think its the truth.

MS don't have to "win" next gen. They just have to make up a good amount of ground and go for the win the gen after, or the one after that.

Think of it like Sega catching Nintendo with the Genesis (same earlier release, did alright the gen before), only without the ridiculous mistakes that followed.

I think that Microsoft is basically going to follow the Sony model and just outdo them at every turn, especially money-wise. You, along with others, are either doubting, discrediting, or just plain disregarding Microsoft. For the life of me, I don't understand. Maybe it is your preference that Sony stays in the lead. This isn't some cheap mom and pop knockoff company, it's fuckin Microsoft. Money makes the world go round and they sure do have a shitload. I just think they are going to follow along the same protocol like they do in just about everything else. 1st generation, throw out a product, learn ins and outs of the biz, get a feel for the industry. 2nd generation, make them bleed. That's the usual Microsoft M.O. I honestly don't see that changing. They view Sony as a threat to Windows. You think MS, you think Windows. The bread and butter of their whole operation. In any event, I may be 100% wrong about this. However, watching the way they flicked Netscape and Sun off like dirt on their shoulder, I fully believe they have the ruthless capacity to take it to whatever level they need it to be at, even when it comes to losing shitloads of money. I think that is the Microsoft we will see this generation.

Well I do also look at the facts too. I like Nintendo but I have no problem calling them out when they're sprouting BS either.

The PS3 is going to be considerably more powerful (which will likely lead to better looking third party titles) and will have the HD format.

I think these are strong things to consider. MS is not "outdoing" Sony at every turn, Sony already has an advantage hardware wise, which is a big blow to MS IMO, because it helped them a lot last generation. This will become very clear at E3.

Like it or not, any advantage the market leader has is amplified because they are the market leader. They get just about every benefit of the doubt from the majority of consumers. And any aspect they have over their competitiors becomes that much bigger. That's just how it is.

And yes, Microsoft toppled Netscape, but they also got their underwear handed to them on a platter by AOL.

It obviously didn't help them that much last generation, considering that the PS2 outsold the Xbox and GameCube combined.

Chiggs said:

That is because Sony has had way better games and a much higher amount of quality titles then both Xbox and Cube combined.

Is it even confirmed that MS is paying MTV for the special? Sure, something's probably changing hands, but this is a big deal for the network too.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were just normal, mutual programming. This scoop on every other media venue is good, good news for MTV execs. I don't see why Xbox marketers would have to pay them for it.
