Xbox 2? No, Xbox 360

360 is fine by me. It's certainly no worse than "Family Computer," "Nintendo 64," "Playstation," and "Dreamcast."

"Genesis" is the coolest name for a system ever, btw

I see your genesis and raise a megadrive

Those calling it the worse system name ever, you think playstation or dreamcast sounds good? I thought they were both absolutely terrible system names when I first heard them. Playstation sounds like some kind of childrens toy while dreamcast sounds kinda fruity.

I believe this news. Early leaks of gaming system names always pan out. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to play RE4 on my Starcube.

A 360 degree 'Box'? :lol

A lot of "boxes" have 360º.

That name is 8 layers of fucktarded.

I almost hope Microsoft goes with it, just to see if it Nintendo or Sony go for the much-vaunted "x thousand" moniker.

PS3000 or PS3k, sigh.

It seems like the only way out of this dick-measuring contest is to get out of numbering consoles altogether. Consumers won't take more than a few minutes to realize these naming schemes are ridiculous.

If Microsoft's trying to make their console look superior, why not just come up with more clever slogans.

I was just discussing this over at #ga

Here are a few features that MSFT needs to implement:

They need to ensure that the system is designed in 'layers' so you can twist the controller slots and the disc slots any way you like

They need to ensure that these slots are properly labled

They need to ensure that the Waffle Iron housed inside the console will not damage the discs and that you can fix up a perfect Eggo waffle while killing someone over XBL in Halo 3...THEN you can talk shit about how you weren't even paying attention and that you were fixing up a waffle and then to show proof you eat the waffle and laugh maniacally into the Mic that now comes standard in every controller!

The Waffle Shader will need to be at least 3.0 to ensure proper use of Waffle Mapping

An awful name, but awful names can eventually latch on, and become second nature with enough use. Still, an awful name. I can see their predicament, though - they can't call it Xbox 2.

I actually don't think it's that bad of a name. Compared to some title's we've gotten used to, I think people will adjust.

Dreamcast gets my vote as worst name ever.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System is right up there.
Playstation sounds like the plastic kitchen my 2 year-old daughter plays in.

So will it come in red color with a horse logo too? :\

Sounds like someone's idea of a bad joke to me.
Personally I've grown somewhat fond of Xenon, even though it's obviously not a name that stands any chance of being used.

I generally think that abbreviations like N64, PS2 and PSP sound way better than the full console names.
I still say PSP should have been named Playgirl.

Whther it's a stupid name or not, I'd rather not comment, but some of you have to realise the importance of brand-name. It's why there are so many seuqels (vidoe games and movies) that are unimaginatively named. If you have a successful product, and you are following up on it, you're halfway there by using the same name or something equally referential.

Xenon? Cool, maybe, but the general public will be going "WTH?".

It's a small factor into playstation2's success. It's instantly identifiable. Yuo can't possibly think that the PS2 has done so well on console build and quality software alone (eventually it may have gone the same way, but that name is required for initial recognition).

This is why I think that Nintendo (for marketing pruposes) should name there next Nintendo something more on the lines of Nintendo N5, or something boring like that - As the industy enters the next generation, and competitor's are all ringing in their successors, it would be powerful to remind everyone how many generations Nintendo has been in this game for...

Microsoft are clever for not going with simply XBox 2 - it will make it seem that PS3 is superior, being thir generation, or whatever. Yet, XBox must remain somewhere. NeXt-Box would've been cute.

Exactly... MS had to keep Xbox in it's name simply because of Xbox Live. If it was called Xenon, then Xbox Live would seem like an old online gaming service. They couldn't do Xbox 2 because then PS3 would be one up on Xbox.

Xbox 360 makes sense... it is the center of your living room and connects to everything around it. I would have preferred HD for high def... but then it seems narrow in scope. 3-6-O will catch on.

That's the coolest console name I've ever heard. Anyone that doesn't think that way hasn't said it outloud.

If that doesn't do it for you, try to scream it at the top of your lungs.
If that still doesn't do it for you, I don't know what will.

I've said it outloud and it sounds like a robot from Star Wars. "Hey, XBox 360: Dinner, bitch!"

NeXt-Box would've been cute.
Actually I believe that name is already owned by someone else...

Frankly I think that's a stupid reasoning too. For one, Sony has not confirmed the name of their next system yet either - what if they named it Playstation 969, will that make it seem superior to XBox 360 too? :\

360 still doesn't make that much sense in that context.

Xbox Nexus would be better.

Genesis: Sega's New Beginning

will never forget it.

Sony or Nintendo should rename their next systems now

Playstation Infinity +1
Nintendo seventygajillionnillionhillionbillionmillion

Bigger number means better!!!!!

Don't know it's already been suggested, but perhaps we'll see a spate of "360" post-fixes to game titles, ala "Waverace 64", "Mario Kart 64" etc. Halo 360, anyone? ;)

Playstation sounds like a Fisher-Price toy. GameCube isn't much better. Dreamcast isn't that bad, IMO. I generally prefer the abbreviations like N64, PS2, and NES. I kinda wish Nintendo would go back to an NES-based nomenclature.

I like this explanation and I think the name will work. They had to keep the Xbox brand and 360 is an encompassing acronym. The point about Sony using 989 is mute as it means nothing. 360 has context and I think it's cool.

And it`s much worse and more stupid than Nintendo 64 because ?

Don't forget, Sega 32X... Nintendo went for 64 because it's double 32 :)

The code name for the next Mario isn't Mario 128 for nothing :D

Xbox Next would've been a lot better.
Or Xbox Evolution.

360 just sounds dumb, and it's bound to confuse consumers. Halo 360!

hah very likley... that actually rolls off the tongue.

as to the name "360". i imagine we will get used to it. it has a certain ring to it IMO, but it makes no sense.

No, not really, it's not about which numbers are higher per se - those are simply arbitrary numbers with little meaning. When nubmers are used to denote a sequel or revison, it's implicit that the latter version is the 'better' version, even if subconcious. Marketing is extremely important in this industry, as I'm sure you're aware.

Also, whther Sony has confirmed a PS3 or not is irrelevant, since, from MS' point of view, the name is still a possibility (if not likely), and they have to be aware of it.

Regardless, they could name it XBox:Turd, and with good marketing, it'd still do well.

Next would't work - as soon as it hit the shelves and became "current" it'd no longer be next.

Evolution is too long and a bit cumbersome..splitting the brand into two seperate words isn't a good idea. You couldn't join them together ala Playstation, because Xbox is known as one word now.

lol no i'm not that subtle :P.... "xbox 360" i can actually imagine saying it... it sounds futuristic... like 300+ console generations in the future :P

I believe 360 refers to coming full circle. Their first generation they took a huge loss to get a brand name established - now they ready to REALLY begin.

Coming full circle means going back to square one i.e. lots of big losses :P I don't think they want you (or their shareholders, at least) to think of it in terms of that ;)

Beginning to think this might be perfect. Clever naming conventions for games ahoy + we can make teh witty with it! ;)

It was never going to be Xbox 2.

Probably because Sony's marketing would of consisted of fake scorelines along the line of

Euro ad-

Juventus 4 - AC Milan 2
Arsenal 1 - Chelsea 1
Xbox 2 - Playstation 3
Benfica 1 - Ajax 2

"Join the winning team" tm

I would argue that 'coming full circle' is loaded with connotations of experience, even though you're returning to where you started.

ie. Travelling the world, but come back to home country to settle down.
or A movie that links the end with the start.

You're in the same place, but you are not the same.

Haha, yeah, it reminds of those stupid children's games where they try to convey how much one of them is right or whatever, by saying stuff like "My dad is 10 times stronger than yours! No, mine is 100 times stronger! Mine is infinitely stronger!!"

That would be a fake ad, Benfica losing to Ajax. :lol

Oh? So I guess the 'Advance' part of the GBA didn't work out either?

Evolution isn't long at all. How is adding Evolution to Xbox splitting the brand? If that were true then Color and Advance should've split the GB brand but it didn't.

Stop making excuses and just admit that 360 is dumb. I mean, what're they going to call the system after that? Xbox 720?

I think Bill planned to name it Xbox 666, but the marketing guys did'nt like his idea that much, so Bill told them to name it at least similar. :lol
