For Pete's sake. The American pronunciation is not "WRONG". Different countries have different pronunciations for lots of words -- and each is correct. In fact both ZEE-non and ZEH-non are accepted as correct in the US, although ZEE-non is generally more common.

I think the simpler reason that Xenon was not used is simply because Microsoft has invested too much $$$ into the XBox brand.
People know the brand and its made some headway in North America and Europe. It wouldn't be a smart marketing move to drop the name so quickly.
Particularily if there is not a new Halo game at the XBox 2/Xenon launch, people may be confused as to what the system is. XBox Whatever as the title naturally makes it look like a next-gen XBox.
"Playstation" when you really think about is a stupid name too, the only reason Sony keeps it is because everyone's been conditioned to associate that name with a cool/market leading console.

Going by this logic, MS should have called their current console Xbox 2, even though it was the first Xbox, so it wouldn't sound a generation behind Playstation 2.

playstation is an ideal name, as is nintendo entertianment system. Says exactly what they do. Gamecube isn't bad either. Not that the name matters much.
BTW, I learned not too long ago that aluminium can be [mis]spelled aluminum. Doesn't make much sense to me since the standard suffix for metal elements is -ium for those with non-common names (ie iron,lead,zinc etc). Although lead (Pb) is derived from Plumbum and iron (Fe) from Ferrum. Nonetheless, it was called aluminium first .
