Uhmmm, outside your island I am pretty sure that majority of Europe wouldn't pronounce it anything like that (or any other englofied version for that matter) :P
Well then there would be a lot of incorrect people wouldnt there if that were the case. :p

Germans pronounce it "kse-non"
with the e pronounced like the e in "bend"

Well I am pretty sure anyone pronouncing it anglofied is already incorrect compared to original Greek source of the word :p

I know, and so do pretty much all Slavic countries.

For Pete's sake. The American pronunciation is not "WRONG". Different countries have different pronunciations for lots of words -- and each is correct. In fact both ZEE-non and ZEH-non are accepted as correct in the US, although ZEE-non is generally more common.

each countries' pronounciation is correct for them. However, Xenon would still not pass the 'License revoked' test, so MS probably won't use it.

I think the simpler reason that Xenon was not used is simply because Microsoft has invested too much $$$ into the XBox brand.

People know the brand and its made some headway in North America and Europe. It wouldn't be a smart marketing move to drop the name so quickly.

Particularily if there is not a new Halo game at the XBox 2/Xenon launch, people may be confused as to what the system is. XBox Whatever as the title naturally makes it look like a next-gen XBox.

"Playstation" when you really think about is a stupid name too, the only reason Sony keeps it is because everyone's been conditioned to associate that name with a cool/market leading console.

Playstation and Gamecube actually make sense. Xbox doesn't. Playstation is the station in the room were you play. Gamecube is a cube that plays games. Xbox is a box that... um... has an X on the top...

But its "X" ... TO THE XTREME!!!!!

pfff... don't you dare defile our language any further with your mispronouciation of Xenon...

We may still start world war three over "aluminium" , ALOOOOMNUM.... WTF!?!? Did half the letters take an unannounced vacation? "A-lu-mi-ni-um" ALUMINIUM.

It is also spelled aluminum. Look it up.

Im gonna put together all the names we have with each console, just pick what you think sounds best.

Sony
Playstation 3..Its a bit too original, but I actually like it, its better then half of the other stupid names for consoles.

Microsoft
Xenon - I like it
Xbox 2 - Not original and also sounds inferior to PS3
Xbox 360 :lol :lol :lol
X2 - Cool
Nextbox - sounds pathetic
Xbox next - no

Nintendo
Nintendo Revolution - I like it a lot
Nintendo 21 :lol
Nintendo Infinity - not bad
N5 - simple and good

>>>Microsoft are clever for not going with simply XBox 2 - it will make it seem that PS3 is superior, being thir generation, or whatever.<<<

Going by this logic, MS should have called their current console Xbox 2, even though it was the first Xbox, so it wouldn't sound a generation behind Playstation 2.

This is a case where the American spelling differs from the rest of the world. It's spelled Aluminium everywhere else.

Thinking about this from a horoscope perspective, the new machine should launch around November during the reign of Scorpio. Now I think The Microsoft Xbox Scorpian sounds pretty damn cool and has some excellent connotations for home connectivity and overall networking.

Should MS just use "Xbox" like a company name?

So it would be like:
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast

Xbox Next
Xbox Xenon

etc

So you'd still have the Xbox brand, and in a way distancing it also from MS. (it doesn't seem so evil then) :D

This may not mean anything, but if you do a whois search on xboxnext.com it comes back to Microsoft, but if you do the same for xbox360.com it comes back to these chaps:

Gaming360 Limited

Not Microsoft, yes you can see that the domain has expired, but if this is the name, you'd think that MS would have indeed picked it up by now.

Ridin' Spinaz commercials, rappin' in Get on da mic in a full room, playing basketball online (circular ball)
This 360 name could easily cater to the gangster people.

I like your avatar PST, but it's going to constantly piss me off if that downwards bar on the T isn't made the correct thickness.

I hope Nintendo go with the whole 2 letter thing like with the SP and DS. Doesn't have to mean anything and it's not the most inventive thing in the world, but it's somehow cooler.

man, those ads ruled.

Also, Dreamcast was a pretty terribly name.
do you remember back in the early ad days of playstation when they had the "you r not e" <-- the e was red in color.
??

Also, what does everyone think of XB2 as a name? Or I guess you could shorten it to just X2, but then I think it would be confused with that Xmen movie. I also like the idea the guy had above of NeXbox, that's probably the best one I've heard and is so damn good, Microsoft needs to fucking hear about it. That name is the bomb ass diggity, and I bet MSFT would think so also. Here's my best to worst...

NeXbox <-- holy shit that rawks!
Xenon <-- love this one too
XB2 <-- pretty good, but maybe inferior to PS3?
X2 <--- confusal with the Xmen 2 movie also called X2
Xbox Next <--- little long, plus 2 words don't work for a brand name. sounds decent tho
Xbox 2 <-- conventional, practical name, but inferior to Playstation 3?
..
..infinity of time and space passes..
..
Xbox 360 <--- DIE DIE DIE!!!

playstation is an ideal name, as is nintendo entertianment system. Says exactly what they do. Gamecube isn't bad either. Not that the name matters much.

BTW, I learned not too long ago that aluminium can be [mis]spelled aluminum. Doesn't make much sense to me since the standard suffix for metal elements is -ium for those with non-common names (ie iron, lead, zinc etc). Although lead (Pb) is derived from Plumbum and iron (Fe) from Ferrum. Nonetheless, it was called aluminium first . :p

Alooooominummmm is retarded. Aluminium is named in line with other elements; Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, etc.

I was always under the impression that the Playstation name was a clever play on 'workstation', myself. You do your work on a (computer) workstation, and you play games on a Playstation. Seems perfectly sensible to me. *shrug*
