Xbox 2 to stick with DVD9? (Interview)

Here is how I anticipate audio/video outputs to be on PS3:

5 options for outputing video on PS3 (RF, Composite, Svideo, Component and DVI+hdcp/HDMI)

4 options for audio(RF, Composite audio, toslink or S/PDIF, HDMI)

480 res video and games

RF
Composite
Svideo
Component

720 and 1080 res video and games

DVI+hdcp or HDMI (whichever output they choose, which will probably be HDMI)

As far as audio is concerned, you sould first have the option for mono/stereo which will be converted to analog in PS3 (all sound will be digitally stored on CD/DVD/BRD disk games) and then output via RF or composite audio...

DPL2 will have the option of either going through the D/A process for output (composite audio connections) or will remain digital (toslink, S/PDIF or HDMI)

The fancy stuff (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital Lossless, dts, dts-HD lossy, dts-HD lossless and uncompressed PCM) will also be transmited digitally via toslink, S/PDIF or HDMI

This is what I expect to happen...most likely, a majority of this stuff (except for dts-HD) will ring true on Xbox 360 (hate that fucking name) as well..

A slight non-update on Blu-Ray/UMD: Sony's talked to Dreamworks, but no deal has been worked out yet. Which is more than many who seem to categorically state that since Universal handles Dreamworks home video distribution, it means they automatically are aligned with Universal. Clearly, not true.

Katzenberg said Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) had approached the studio about releasing films on the new UMD format for use in Sony's new PlayStation Portable video game and media player and on Sony's high-definition Blu-Ray DVD format but had come to no agreement.

"There are a lot of things to be worked out in terms of cost and pricing and margins," he said.

What's also interesting is that this looks like Sony may be shopping these two technologies together when they get to the movie studios almost tying them together in some way. Which makes sense, but is a pretty bold move.

there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to cripple component 720/1080 output from GAMES on xbox360/ps3

time will tell if the customer backlash allows it from bluray/hd-dvd video

No reason, huh???

Understand this

The quality of the best Blu-ray and HD-DVD content will basically be archival quality...

If you were to look at the audio/video quality of those $30K D5 master tapes used by the film studios to author movies, it would be virtually the same as a BRD or HD-DVD consumer disk..

What makes you think that hollywood would not move heaven and earth to ensure there is as much encryption and protection as possible to ensure there is no illegal distribution of these master quality products????

Shit, don't be surprised if most HD-DVD/BRD hardware DONT EVEN HAVE component video outputs at all!!!

Even if they *do* have component video outs, it will be downsampled 480p AT BEST, I assure you.....

ALL HD CONTENT WILL BE OUTPUT VIA ENCRYPTED CONNECTORS and that is the bottom line...

Do I like or support this fact?

No...but consumers might as well draw their lines now, because Hollywood will *NEVER* budge from this issue...

As far as games are concerned.....well...it is possible we will see 720/1080 via component, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one...

Thanks for the opinions on my question Klee. Although the hdtv that I have now was bought as a "stop gap" till price came down and future tech emerged, it's still dishearting to hear that it won't be able to support the newer formats that are coming out soon. I just hope the input standards that are in place now last longer than a few years before something new come along.

Edit:

As far as games are concerned.....well...it is possible we will see 720/1080 via component, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one...

Although there isn't anything to protect as far as games a concerned in the battle of analog vs. digatal video inputs like there is with movies, I agree that I don't see Sony going the extra mile to provide hd output for both streams just for games when they can just keep all hd content going thru hdmi. On the other hand, if xbox360 is going to stay with dvds as the media for games and movies they might offer 720p or 1080i thru analog for games like the current xbox does.

I disagree. There is no way games will not support HD component. There is zero reason for that. And I'm not too sure about movies, either. How many HDTV sets out there have HDMI? Studios would be really dumb to cut of the majority of an already small market.
Maybe later on, when most sets will have HDMI they will switch to encrypted output, but the initial releases most likely will be unencrypted to push adoption of the format.

Who wants to archive video game footage. ROTF. i said gaming and yes they need to figure that out, regardless of the video protection (ie. xbox isn't progressive for dvd but is for gaming)

please read before posting a sermon of a response.

ps - stranger things have happened... both video factions will be scrounging for customers

pss - pirates make $$$ videotaping in theatres... by the time home releases are available noone cares about pirating. don't repeat the hollywood spin as fact ;)

klee, you make a good point, but I disagree. Next gen consoles will still be sold on gaming, and HD via component is likely IMO.

HD-DVD/bluray, I agree with you - encrypted only.

There is a precedent for this - PS2 in Europe can play games in RGB via SCART, but DVD playback is(was) crippled due to macrovision not being supported on SCART.

So for the full multimedia experience, you either went composite, or you had two cables
